The Björkstadsschacket 2026 takes place from October 2–4, 2026, in Umeå, Sweden. SK Rockaden Umeå and Västerbottens Schackförbund host the tournament at their shared clubhouse in the Haga district.

The event also serves as the Open Västerbotten Classical Chess Championship. Therefore, visiting players can enter the open competition, while eligible federation members compete for senior and junior district championship awards.

Players complete seven Swiss-system rounds across three days. Friday features three shorter games, while Saturday and Sunday offer four standard games. Moreover, Chess-Results lists the competition for national and international rating calculation.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The organizer uses the Swiss system across all seven rounds. However, the tournament applies two different time controls during the weekend.

Rounds 1–3 give each player 15 minutes, together with a 10-second increment after every move. These three games take place on Friday evening.

Rounds 4–7 give each player 90 minutes, plus a 30-second increment after every move. Therefore, Saturday and Sunday provide four longer games under standard playing conditions.

Swiss-Manager handles the pairings and tournament administration. In addition, Chess-Results publishes the starting list, pairings, standings, and results.

🏆 Prize Fund

The organizer returns 80% of all entry-fee revenue through cash prizes for the top three players. Consequently, the final monetary value depends on the number and type of paid entries.

Additional Awards

The organizer divides cash prizes equally among players who finish with the same score. However, the tie-break result determines the official district champion.

Players may win more than one award. Therefore, an eligible participant can collect an overall prize and an additional category prize.

The tournament uses one open playing section. However, the organizer also maintains district championship and junior classifications within the same competition.

Eligible federation members can compete for district trophies without entering a separate section. Meanwhile, all participants remain part of the same seven-round tournament.

All times follow local time in Umeå.

Friday includes three consecutive shorter rounds. Therefore, participants should complete registration before 18:30 and prepare for a full evening of play.

Sunday begins at 08:30. Consequently, players staying outside the Haga area should arrange their morning transport in advance.

📝 Registration

Players must email their registration no later than Wednesday, September 30, 2026. This requirement also applies to participants who plan to pay at the venue.

Entry Fees

Players may pay the entry fee in advance through the organizer’s PlusGiro account. Alternatively, they can pay at the venue before Round 1.

Payment Details

The registration email should include the player’s full name, address, chess club, and rating.

Players who pay in advance do not need to complete the full on-site payment process. Instead, they can arrive at the playing hall by 18:30, and the organizer will include them automatically in the first-round pairings.

BK Björken / SK Rockaden Umeå Clubhouse, OK-huset Haga – Moritzvägen 2, Umeå, Sweden.

The playing hall stands in Umeå’s Haga district, north of the city center. SK Rockaden Umeå and BK Björken use the clubhouse for regular chess and bridge activities.

Hotell Vilja occupies the same building complex. Therefore, players who stay there can reach the playing hall without a separate journey.

The area also offers access to local shops and simple food outlets. In addition, the organizer sells coffee, snacks, and sweets during the tournament.

The official invitation recommends several accommodation options in Umeå. The prices below show recent advertised starting rates and may change for the tournament weekend.

The invitation notes that members of the Swedish Chess Federation may receive a discount at Elite Hotel Mimer. Therefore, eligible players should mention their federation membership when booking.

Hotell Vilja provides the most convenient location. Meanwhile, Scandic Plaza and Elite Hotel Mimer place visitors near central Umeå’s restaurants and transport connections.

Arrival Advice

On-site registration ends at 18:30 on Friday, while Round 1 begins at 18:40. Therefore, players who have not paid in advance should arrive well before the registration period closes.

Airport Bus Line 80 connects Umeå Airport with Vasaplan. In addition, Umeå Centralstation stands within walking distance of the central bus connections.

Coffee comes with the entry fee. Moreover, the organizer sells snacks, sweets, and other refreshments at reasonable prices.

Several simple food outlets operate near the playing venue. Therefore, players can find meals between the Saturday and Sunday rounds.

District Championship Awards

Only members of Västerbottens Schackförbund can win the official senior and junior district championship trophies.

However, players from other clubs and regions can compete for the overall tournament prizes.
