♟️ About Club d’Escacs Cornellà

Club d’Escacs Cornellà is a historic chess organization in Cornellà de Llobregat, near Barcelona, Spain. Local chess enthusiasts formally created the club in 1942. Two years later, it joined the Patronat Cultural i Recreatiu. Therefore, the club has maintained strong links with Cornellà’s cultural and social life for more than eight decades.

The club joined the Catalan Chess Federation in 1949. Since then, its players have competed in Catalan individual and team championships. Moreover, the organization welcomes experienced competitors, recreational players, juniors, women, seniors, and complete beginners. Members can enjoy rated chess, internal events, training sessions, and informal games at the clubroom.

Nicolás Plaza Arcos serves as President for the 2025–2026 term. Meanwhile, Francisco Xavier Solera Castellano serves as Vice-President. Other board members manage administration, finances, tournaments, junior activities, and community projects. As a result, the club maintains an extensive program throughout the year.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Club d’Escacs Cornellà organizes classical, rapid, blitz, junior, women’s, social, and community tournaments. Therefore, players can choose events that suit their age, rating, and preferred time control. The club also participates regularly in the Catalan Chess League.

Its principal classical event is the Open Club d’Escacs Cornellà – Dr. Josep Vallvé i Piñol Memorial. The tournament began in 2013. In 2026, it reaches its twelfth edition with nine FIDE-rated and Catalan-rated rounds. Nicolás Plaza Arcos directs the event, while Josep Maria Jordan Garcia serves as Chief Arbiter.

The memorial honours Dr. Josep Vallvé i Piñol, a respected doctor and long-standing Cornellà player. He represented the club during its early decades. Moreover, he also played for Club Escacs Barcelona and remained active in local chess for many years.

The annual program also includes the Josep Boada Cup, club championships, youth competitions, memorial tournaments, and solidarity events. In addition, the club organizes open-air activities during neighbourhood festivals. These events bring chess into public spaces across Cornellà.

The organization also promotes women’s chess. For example, it launched a dedicated women’s open and created opportunities for female team competition. Consequently, more women and girls can enter organized chess within a supportive local environment.

🎓 Chess School and Community Development

Chess education forms a central part of the club’s work. The organization provides regular lessons for children and developing players. Moreover, its chess school has operated for more than 50 years. Students can learn the rules, tactics, strategy, calculation, and tournament behaviour.

Young members can progress from training into age-group tournaments and team competition. In addition, the club supports the Catalan youth championship qualifying stages. This pathway gives juniors regular experience under official playing conditions.

The club also offers activities for adults and returning players. Therefore, people can begin chess without previous tournament experience. Regular club evenings provide opportunities for coaching, friendly games, analysis, and competitive practice.

Club d’Escacs Cornellà works with the Cornellà City Council, Patronat Cultural i Recreatiu, neighbourhood associations, schools, and regional chess organizations. Consequently, it can organize tournaments, educational projects, festival activities, and charitable events throughout the city. Above all, the club combines competitive chess with education, inclusion, and community participation.
