Échiquier Montluçonnais is a long-established chess club based in Montluçon, Allier, France. Founded in 1949, the club has served generations of local players and today combines recreational chess, competitive play, junior and adult instruction, team competition, and tournament organization.

The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under club code D03005. Its regular home is Espace Boris Vian, at 27 Rue des Faucheroux in Montluçon, where members meet for chess activities during the week and at weekends.

Brigitte Jaladon currently serves as President. Michel Bolis, a long-standing figure in the club, remains an important organizer and contact for its chess activities. Bolis previously led a major period of development after taking over the presidency in 2011, when the club had only a small membership.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Échiquier Montluçonnais organizes both formal rated competitions and more informal tournaments throughout the year. Its best-known recurring event is the Open de Parties Rapides de l’Échiquier Montluçonnais, a FIDE- and FFE-rated rapid tournament attracting players from Montluçon and the wider Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

The event reached its 13th edition in 2027. The 13e Open de Parties Rapides de l’Échiquier Montluçonnais is scheduled for March 21, 2027 at the Ferme des Ilets / Espace Boris Vian. The tournament features seven Swiss rounds at 15 minutes plus a three-second increment and offers a guaranteed €1,000 prize fund. Michel Bolis is the published organizer.

Previous editions demonstrate the continuity of the tournament. The 12th edition was held in June 2026, while the 11th edition took place in March 2025. The club has progressively developed the event into an established regional rapid competition.

In addition to its main Open, the club regularly organizes friendly tournaments for members and visiting players. These competitions provide opportunities for both experienced competitors and developing juniors to play in a structured but welcoming environment.

🌱 Chess School & Junior Development

Chess instruction is an important part of Échiquier Montluçonnais. The club welcomes children from around six years of age as well as adults, offering both introductory instruction and opportunities for competitive development.

Its program includes a chess school for juniors and adults, regular practice sessions, friendly tournaments, and participation in official team competitions. Recent club activities show a strong emphasis on younger players, with juniors regularly taking part in internal events alongside experienced adult members.

The FFE lists the club as participating in both adult regional interclubs and regional youth interclubs, providing a pathway from club training into official French team competition.

Échiquier Montluçonnais also participates in community chess initiatives in cooperation with local institutions. Activities at the municipal media library and Espace Boris Vian introduce chess to new players and give local residents opportunities to discover the club.

📚 History & Development

Échiquier Montluçonnais traces its history to 1949, giving the association more than seven decades of chess activity in Montluçon. Over that period, membership has naturally fluctuated, but the club has maintained a continuous role in the local chess community.

A significant period of renewal began in 2011, when Michel Bolis assumed the presidency while the club had only a handful of active members. The association subsequently rebuilt its membership, expanded junior activities, and developed a broader program of tournaments and training.

Today, the club combines this long local tradition with official FFE competition, youth development, regional interclubs, community chess, and its annual FIDE-rated rapid Open.

The City of Montluçon has also supported the club’s tournament activities. Municipal records show support for the Open and recognize Échiquier Montluçonnais as an association promoting chess within the city.
