SK Rockaden Umeå is a chess club based in Umeå, Sweden, serving players from the city and surrounding Västerbotten region. Founded in 1953, the club has more than 70 years of organized chess history and currently has approximately 75 members, ranging from young children to experienced adult competitors. Its program combines regular club tournaments, junior coaching, Swedish league competition, FIDE-rated events, rapid and blitz chess, and community activities. Rockaden runs competitive chess throughout the playing season. Monday evenings are primarily dedicated to tournaments, rotating between classical, rapid, blitz, and special formats, while Wednesdays are reserved for structured junior training. The club fields several teams in the Swedish league system, and its first team continues to compete in Division 1, one level below Sweden’s Superettan. Moreover, Rockaden organizes major local tournaments together with Västerbottens Schackförbund. Henrik Olofsson is the club’s Chairman and principal public contact. Other key figures include Treasurer Jonas Burman, who is heavily involved in tournament organization, and youth coordinator Christoffer Berggren. Rockaden’s 2026 calendar included the FIDE-rated Kibix Open in May, while the club is now preparing Björkstadsschacket 2026, scheduled for October 2–4 in Umeå.

📜 History and Development

SK Rockaden Umeå was established in 1953. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003 with a commemorative publication documenting the people, tournaments, and development of chess in Umeå across five decades. Over the years, Rockaden has become a stable part of organized chess in northern Sweden. Its activities extend beyond competitive team chess and include internal championships, individual tournaments, junior development, lectures, and community projects. Since 2016, the club has also cooperated with Umeå’s cultural administration on Schack på Väven, a public chess initiative at the Väven cultural center. This provides another way for residents to encounter and play chess outside the club’s regular tournament environment.

🎓 Junior Chess and Training

Junior development is an established part of Rockaden’s weekly program. The club offers Wednesday evening training for players aged approximately 6–18, divided into three groups ranging from beginners to advanced juniors. Christoffer Berggren coordinates the youth program. His long-standing work with junior chess was recognized in 2026 when the Swedish Chess Federation awarded him a Rilton Medal for his contribution to Swedish chess. From autumn 2026, he is also serving as a regional chess consultant for upper northern Sweden. Club membership provides juniors with access to training and competition as well as support for participation in selected youth tournaments. Rockaden players also compete in Swedish Championship events and junior competitions around the country.

♜ Team Chess

Team competition remains one of the club’s central activities. Rockaden’s first team competed in Division 1 North during the 2025–2026 Swedish Allsvenskan season, while its second team played in Division 2. The first team has consistently competed near the upper end of Division 1 in recent seasons. During the preceding 2024–2025 campaign, Rockaden finished second in Division 1 North, narrowly missing the opportunity to advance toward the Superettan. For the 2026–2027 season, Rockaden is again assigned to Division 1 North, where its opponents include SK Passanten, SK Rockaden Stockholm III, Gävle SA, Wasa SK III, Uppsala SSS, Uppsala SSS II, and Stockholms SS II. The club strengthened its playing squad during summer 2026 with the arrival of Tommy Lidén from SS Luleå, adding another player rated above 2100 to its senior team pool.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Rockaden organizes both internal competitions and larger open tournaments. The Kibix Open 2026, held from May 8–10, was a seven-round FIDE-rated event combining rapid opening rounds with longer classical games. Thirty players participated, including GM Thomas Ernst and several strong northern Swedish competitors. FM Adrian Söderström of SS Luleå won the tournament for the second consecutive year, scoring an unbeaten 6.5/7. Rockaden player David Johansson finished second with 5.5 points. The club’s principal upcoming event is Björkstadsschacket 2026, organized jointly with Västerbottens Schackförbund from October 2–4, 2026 at the club premises on Moritzvägen 2. The seven-round tournament combines three faster opening rounds with four classical rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Results will count toward both Swedish national and FIDE ratings. Jonas Burman serves as Tournament Director, while Mikael Forsberg is Chief Arbiter.

🏛️ Organization and Club Life

Henrik Olofsson serves as Chairman of SK Rockaden Umeå. Jonas Burman is Treasurer and is also deeply involved in the club’s tournament administration, while Lars-Erik Hasselgren serves as Secretary. Rockaden’s regular playing venue is at Moritzvägen 2 in the Haga district of Umeå. The premises host league matches, club tournaments, junior training, and larger competitions such as Björkstadsschacket. The club’s autumn 2026 program begins on August 31 and includes blitz, handicap tournaments, the club championship, league competition, and the October Björkstadsschacket.
