The Golders Green FIDE Rapid 2027 takes place on Saturday, January 9, 2027, at St Luke’s Church in Hampstead, North West London. The tournament is part of the long-running Golders Green Rapid series, which began in February 1992 and continues to provide regular one-day competitive chess in London.

Organized by Chess England and International Arbiter Adam Raoof, the January event features six rounds across four sections: Open, U1900, U1600, and ECF U1100. The Open, U1900, and U1600 sections are registered for both FIDE and ECF Rapid rating, while the U1100 section is ECF Rapid rated only.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament consists of six rounds played under the Swiss system.

Time Control: 20 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move from move 1

Each player begins with 20 minutes and receives an additional five seconds after every move. This produces a relatively substantial Rapid game while still allowing one complete round to be scheduled every hour.

Round Frequency Approximately one round per hour
FIDE Rapid Rated Open, U1900, U1600
ECF Rapid Rated Open, U1900, U1600, U1100

FIDE has separately registered the three international-rating sections for January 9, 2027:

Section FIDE Event ID
Open 498481
U1900 498482
U1600 498483

The U1100 section does not have a corresponding FIDE tournament registration and is advertised as ECF Rapid rated only.

Round 1 Bye

Players may request a Round 1 bye when completing the registration form.

The current entry form asks players taking the first-round bye to arrive by approximately 12:00 noon for Round 2. The organizer does not publish a points value for this bye on the current form, so players requiring clarification should contact the organizer before the event.

🧩 Sections / Groups

The tournament offers four sections designed to provide competitive pairings across a wide range of playing strengths.

Section Rating Status
Open FIDE Rapid + ECF Rapid
U1900 FIDE Rapid + ECF Rapid
U1600 FIDE Rapid + ECF Rapid
ECF U1100 ECF Rapid only

Players entering one of the first three sections require a valid FIDE Identification Number (FIN) because those tournaments are submitted for FIDE Rapid rating.

English players who do not already have a FIN can request one through the English Chess Federation. Players registered with another national federation should arrange their FIDE ID through that federation.

The current entry form collects both FIDE Rapid and ECF Rapid rating information. Players whose rating is close to a section boundary should use their current official rating details and contact the organizer if they are uncertain which section is appropriate.

📅 Schedule

All six rounds are played on Saturday, January 9, 2027.

Time Program
11:00 AM Round 1
12:00 PM Round 2
1:00 PM Round 3
2:00 PM Round 4
3:00 PM Round 5
4:00 PM Round 6
Approx. 5:00 PM Tournament Finish

The schedule is deliberately compact, with one round starting each hour.

There is no separately published long lunch break. Players should therefore plan food and refreshments around the hourly playing schedule rather than expecting an extended break between rounds.

An optional £5 donation to support the event is also available through the registration form.

📍 Venue

St Luke’s Church – 12 Kidderpore Avenue, London NW3 7SU, United Kingdom.

St Luke’s Church is located in a residential part of Hampstead in North West London, close to West Hampstead, Finchley Road, and Fortune Green. The church hall is used for community events and provides a practical setting for the Golders Green Rapid series.

The venue has step-free access, which can assist players and visitors with reduced mobility.

Parking

There is no dedicated on-site car park at St Luke’s Church.

On-street parking is available in the surrounding area, but restrictions vary by street and parking bay. Drivers should check Camden parking signs carefully before leaving their vehicle and should allow additional time before Round 1 to find a legal parking space.

Because the tournament takes place on a Saturday, parking restrictions may differ from weekday controls, but players should rely on the signage in force on the day.

🏨 Accommodation

The organizer does not publish an official tournament hotel or accommodation package for the January 2027 Golders Green Rapid.

Players traveling from outside London can nevertheless find several hotels within easy reach of St Luke’s Church and the surrounding Hampstead area.

Hotel Approx. Price / Night
Quality Hotel Hampstead – 5–7 Frognal, London NW3 6AL Approx. £100–£145
Best Western Swiss Cottage Hotel – 4 Adamson Road, London NW3 3HP Approx. £120–£170

Quality Hotel Hampstead

5–7 Frognal, London NW3 6AL

Quality Hotel Hampstead is a convenient option near Finchley Road and is well positioned for travel to the tournament venue.

The hotel provides Wi-Fi and parking facilities, while its location gives guests easy access to Underground, Overground, and local bus connections. It can therefore be particularly practical for players arriving from another part of London or staying overnight before the tournament.

Best Western Swiss Cottage Hotel

4 Adamson Road, London NW3 3HP

Best Western Swiss Cottage Hotel is located close to Swiss Cottage Underground Station on the Jubilee line.

The property offers convenient public-transport connections and provides another practical option for players who want to stay in North West London without relying on a car on tournament morning.

Hotel prices are approximate public rates and are not official tournament rates. January 2027 prices may vary according to room type, taxes, cancellation terms, availability, and booking date.

🚆 How to Get There

St Luke’s Church is located in Hampstead, between the West Hampstead, Finchley Road, and Fortune Green areas of North West London.

Public transport is generally the easiest way to reach the tournament because there is no dedicated parking at the venue.

🚆 By Train

West Hampstead Thameslink is one of the most convenient railway stations for the venue.

The station is approximately 0.5–0.6 miles from St Luke’s Church, making the venue reachable in roughly 15 minutes on foot, depending on the route and walking pace.

West Hampstead provides useful connections for players arriving from north or central London and from destinations served by the Thameslink network.

🚇 By Underground / Overground

Other useful stations include:

Station Approx. Distance
Finchley Road & Frognal – London Overground Approx. 0.6 miles
West Hampstead – Underground / Overground Approx. 0.6 miles
Hampstead – Northern line Approx. 0.7 miles
Finchley Road – Jubilee / Metropolitan lines Approx. 0.9 miles

Players using the Underground can combine rail travel with a short bus journey or walk to Kidderpore Avenue.

🚌 By Bus

From the Finchley Road area, bus routes 13 and 113 travel north toward the Fortune Green area.

From West Hampstead, route 328 provides another useful connection toward Golders Green and Fortune Green.

Other services operate in the surrounding area, including routes 139 and C11.

London bus services and engineering works can change, particularly at weekends, so players should check the latest Transport for London journey information before leaving.

🚗 By Car

Drivers approaching from central or north London can use the A41 / Finchley Road corridor and continue toward Hampstead and Kidderpore Avenue.

Because St Luke’s Church has no dedicated on-site parking, players traveling by car should allow sufficient time to locate permitted on-street parking before the 11:00 AM Round 1 start.

ℹ️ Other Information

♟️ A Long-Running London Rapid Series

The tournament series dates back to February 8, 1992, when the event began as the Golders Green Quickplay.

It has since developed into a regular London Rapid tournament and now combines its long-established one-day format with modern FIDE and ECF Rapid rating.

📅 Monthly Tournament Series

Golders Green Rapids are scheduled regularly throughout 2027 rather than as a single annual competition.

The published 2027 calendar currently includes editions in:

January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November.

This makes the series particularly useful for London-based players seeking regular FIDE or ECF Rapid-rated competition.

🌐 Rating Structure

The January tournament has three separately registered FIDE events:

Open – FIDE Event ID 498481
U1900 – FIDE Event ID 498482
U1600 – FIDE Event ID 498483

All three also receive ECF Rapid rating.

The ECF U1100 is rated by the English Chess Federation but is not currently listed as a FIDE-rated section.

🔎 Before the Tournament

Players should check the official entry form and ECF listing shortly before January 9 for the latest information concerning entries, section availability, ECF membership requirements, and any organizer announcements.
