The GECO – Gefle Elite Chess Open 2026 takes place from November 20–22, 2026 at Elite Hotel Gävle in Sweden. Gävle Schackallians welcomes players to the sixth edition of GECO, staged entirely inside the hotel’s main building.
The tournament uses an unusual mixed format: the first four rounds are FIDE rapid at 15+5, followed by four classical rounds at 90+30. Each discipline is submitted for Elo rating separately, while the combined eight-round standings determine the tournament prizes.
The published main prizes begin at SEK 7,000 for first place, with additional rating-group, women’s, U16 and 65+ awards. The organizer states that the advertised prizes are guaranteed only with at least 80 paying participants, so no fixed USD prize total is entered in the metadata.

📍 Venue
Elite Hotel Gävle – Kyrkogatan 28, Gävle, Sweden.
The invitation emphasizes that all games are played inside the hotel’s main building. This is useful because Elite Hotel Gävle includes several connected/event spaces and participants should not assume an annex location.
🏨 Accommodation
Participants booking Elite Hotel Gävle are advised to use the Swedish Chess Federation hotel link for the chess discount unless their own Elite membership gives a better rate. The tournament does not provide a GM lodging subsidy.
Because room rates vary dynamically, the organizer does not publish one fixed 2026 room price in the regulation sheet.
🚆 How to Get There
Elite Hotel Gävle is centrally located in Gävle, close to the railway station and city centre. Rail is a practical option from Stockholm and other Swedish cities, while drivers should confirm current hotel parking arrangements before arrival.
The four Friday rapid rounds run until late evening, so staying at or near the venue can reduce travel after Round 4.
ℹ️ Other Information
Mixed-Discipline Rating
The rapid and classical games are rated in their respective FIDE disciplines rather than as one homogeneous rating event. Players should therefore expect separate rapid and standard rating effects from the weekend.
Prize Payment
Cash prizes are paid by bank transfer after the required tax and recipient information is collected. Players travelling from abroad should be prepared to provide international bank details if they finish in a prize position.
