The English Chess Championships 2026 will take place from October 24 to November 1, 2026, at the Holiday Inn Peterborough – West in Peterborough, England. The English Chess Federation organizes a nine-day national chess festival that brings together the English Standard, Rapid, Blitz, and Seniors Championships.

The festival includes eight published competitions: the English Championship, English Women’s Championship, Over 50 Championship, Over 65 Championship, Open Rapidplay Championship, Women’s Rapidplay Championship, Open Blitz Championship, and Women’s Blitz Championship. Moreover, all competitions count for both ECF and FIDE rating.

The published cash prize schedule totals £20,900 (approximately $27,950) before any additional conditional Women’s Senior Championship funds. The program begins with Rapid chess on October 24–25, continues with the Standard and Seniors Championships from October 26–31, and concludes with the Blitz Championships on November 1.

The festival uses three different time controls. Consequently, players should check the rules for the particular championship they enter.

Standard Open and Women’s Championships

Both main Standard Championships use nine rounds.

The organizers use the FIDE Standard rating first, followed by the October 2026 ECF Standard rating when needed.

Moreover, players without either rating may receive an estimated rating from the ECF Entries Secretary.

Seniors Over 50 and Over 65

Both Seniors Championships use seven rounds.

The same October rating priority applies: FIDE Standard first, then ECF Standard.

Rapid Championships

The Rapid Open and Women’s Rapid Championship each consist of 11 rounds.

The organizers use FIDE Rapid ratings first and October 2026 ECF Rapid ratings second.

Blitz Championships

The final day features 15-round Open and Women’s Blitz Championships.

For Blitz, the organizers use FIDE Blitz ratings first and the November 2026 ECF Blitz list second.

Zero-Point Byes

No championship allows requested half-point byes.

However, players may request a zero-point bye. They must make the request either when registering or before the end of the previous round.

🏆 Prize Fund

The published prize schedule across the eight championships totals £20,900 (approximately $27,950).

This calculation includes the listed place prizes and performance prizes. However, it does not include any additional Women’s Senior Championship prize fund that may arise under the participation rule.

English Championship – Open

The flagship Standard Championship carries £8,300 (approximately $11,100) in published cash prizes.

English Women’s Championship

The Women’s Standard Championship offers £3,900 (approximately $5,220).

Over 50 Championship

The Over 50 Championship offers £1,200 (approximately $1,610).

The leading woman also receives a trophy.

Over 65 Championship

The Over 65 Championship uses the same £1,200 (approximately $1,610) cash structure.

Open Rapidplay Championship

The Open Rapid offers £2,400 (approximately $3,210).

Women’s Rapidplay Championship

The Women’s Rapid offers £1,200 (approximately $1,610).

Open Blitz Championship

The Open Blitz offers £1,800 (approximately $2,410).

Women’s Blitz Championship

The formal 2026 Tournament Rules publish £900 (approximately $1,210) in cash prizes.

Prize Sharing and Championship Playoffs

For ordinary place prizes, players who finish level on points share the relevant cash prizes equally. The organizers do not use ordinary tiebreaks to divide that money.

However, the championship title itself requires a playoff when players tie for first.

In that situation, the tied players share 90% of the combined prize money attached to their positions. The playoff winner receives the remaining 10% and the championship title.

Performance prizes use the published W-We performance calculation. Moreover, a player cannot collect both a place prize and a performance prize; instead, that player receives the higher-value award.

Additional Women’s Senior Championships

If either Seniors category attracts eight or more women, the organizers will run a separate Women’s Championship for that age category.

That additional championship will carry a separate cash prize fund of at least £500 (approximately $670).

Therefore, the eventual festival prize total can exceed £20,900.

The English Chess Championships 2026 offer championship opportunities across standard, senior, rapid, and blitz chess.

Standard Open

The English Championship Open has a published minimum FIDE Standard rating of 2000.

However, any champion from the 2026 English Youth Championships can enter with a rating of 1800 or higher.

The qualifying rating can be a published or live FIDE rating achieved at any point during 2026.

Standard Women

The English Women’s Championship requires a minimum FIDE Standard rating of 1600.

A 2026 English Youth Champion can qualify from 1400.

Again, the ECF accepts a published or live FIDE rating reached at any point during 2026.

Seniors

The Over 50 and Over 65 Championships have no minimum rating requirement.

Rapid and Blitz

Neither the Open nor Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships has a minimum rating requirement.

However, the general nationality and membership rules still apply.

Eligibility

Only players whose FIDE federation is England (ENG) may participate.

Unregistered players may also enter if they qualify for FIDE registration under England.

In addition, every entrant must hold ECF Gold membership.

Women’s Championship Format Rule

The organizers reserve the right to amend the format of a Women’s Championship when the number of participants falls below 150% of the number of scheduled rounds.

The championships run in three phases: Rapid on the opening weekend, Standard and Seniors during the following week, and Blitz on the final Sunday.

Round 1 pairings are scheduled for publication at 11:30.

Standard Open and Women – October 26–31

Round 1 pairings are scheduled for 21:00 on Sunday, October 25. After that, the organizers publish subsequent pairings as soon as possible.

Seniors – October 26–31

Blitz – Sunday, November 1

The Blitz Championships conclude the festival with 15 rounds.

The organizers plan to publish Round 1 pairings at 09:30.

The championships take place at Holiday Inn Peterborough – West – Thorpe Wood, Peterborough PE3 6SG, United Kingdom.

Peterborough has fast rail links with London and good road access through the A1 and A47.

By Train

Peterborough railway station provides the main rail connection for players arriving from elsewhere in Britain.

Direct trains from London can reach Peterborough in under 45 minutes on some services.

The hotel lies roughly 3 miles by road from the station. Therefore, a taxi provides the simplest final connection.

Local buses also connect the Peterborough / Queensgate area with Thorpe Wood. Players using public transport should check the current weekend timetable before traveling.

From London

Players traveling from London can use direct rail services from London King’s Cross to Peterborough.

After reaching Peterborough, they can continue by taxi or local bus to Thorpe Wood.

These figures represent tournament entries rather than necessarily 101 different individuals, because one player may enter more than one championship.

The Standard Open list already includes GM Gawain Jones, GM Michael Adams, GM Ameet Ghasi, IM Brandon Clarke, IM Marcus Harvey, GM Neil McDonald, GM Daniel Gormally, and GM Mark Hebden.

Meanwhile, the Women’s field includes WGM Elmira Mirzoeva, IM Susan Lalic, and WGM Sheila Jackson.

Championship History

The first English Chess Championship took place in 1991 as an eight-player knockout. GM Nigel Short won that inaugural competition.

From 2007 through 2021, the English Champion title generally went to the highest-placed eligible English player or players in the British Championship.

However, the ECF restored the stand-alone English Championship in 2022.

Mark Hebden won the restored championship in 2022, while Michael Adams won in 2023. Gawain Jones took the 2024 title.

In 2025, Michael Adams defeated Nikita Vitiugov after a playoff to reclaim the English title. Meanwhile, WGM Elmira Mirzoeva defeated WCM Shambavi Hariharan in the Women’s playoff and became the 2025 English Women’s Champion.

Championship Playoffs

A tie for first place does not produce joint national champions.

Instead, the leading tied players enter a knockout playoff.

For a two-player Standard Championship tie, the playoff begins with two games at 15+10. If the match remains level, the players continue with two 3+2 Blitz games and, if necessary, a sudden-death game.

Rapid and Blitz title playoffs begin at the faster playoff stage rather than repeating the full Standard sequence.

Electronic Devices

Players must not carry a mobile phone, smartwatch, fitness tracker, or similar electronic device on their person during play.

If a player cannot leave a device outside the playing area, they must switch it off where possible and place it on the playing table or inside a closed bag.

A player immediately loses the game if a device:

• makes a sound;
• remains switched on; or
• is found on the player’s person during play.

Appeals

Players can appeal an arbiter’s decision in writing.

For Standard and Seniors events, the deadline is 30 minutes after the decision or the end of the game, whichever comes later.

For Rapid and Blitz, the deadline is 10 minutes.

Every appeal requires a £50 deposit (approximately $70).

The ECF returns the deposit when the appeal succeeds. Moreover, the Appeals Committee may also return it when an unsuccessful appeal had significant reasonable grounds.

Juniors

Parents and guardians remain responsible for junior players whenever those children are outside the playing venue.

The organizers and arbiters do not act in loco parentis.

Players should verify their FIDE federation, ECF Gold membership, FIDE ID, qualifying rating, championship choice, payment, and accommodation booking before traveling.

Women’s Championship entrants should also monitor final announcements because the ECF may adjust a Women’s competition format when the final field remains below the published participation threshold.
