The English Chess Federation, commonly known as the ECF, is the national governing chess organization for England and the country’s official member federation of FIDE. It promotes chess as a competitive sport, educational activity, and social pursuit. Its work supports individual players, clubs, leagues, county associations, tournament organizers, arbiters, coaches, schools, and national teams.

The present federation began operating in 2005, succeeding the British Chess Federation, whose history dates back to 1904. Today, the ECF manages a national membership system and provides the administrative structure behind rated chess in England. It also maintains relationships with FIDE, the European Chess Union, regional chess unions, affiliated organizations, and independent tournament organizers.

Dominic Lawson serves as President of the English Chess Federation, while Richard Walsh is the Chief Executive. The ECF Board also includes directors responsible for events, finance, international chess, junior development, women’s chess, home chess development, and external relations. In addition, a wide network of officers manages ratings, arbiters, safeguarding, online chess, national competitions, communications, and other specialist areas.

🏆 National Tournaments and International Chess

The English Chess Federation organizes and supports a broad calendar of classical, rapid, blitz, junior, schools, county, women’s, senior, and online competitions. These events serve beginners, club players, leading juniors, experienced tournament competitors, and titled professionals.

The British Chess Championships form the centerpiece of the federation’s tournament program. The annual festival includes the main British Championship, the British Women’s Championship, junior age-group events, senior competitions, rating-limited sections, and faster side events. It brings together players from across the United Kingdom for one of the country’s most important chess festivals.

Other major ECF competitions include the English Championships, English Women’s Championship, English Seniors Championship, Counties Championship, UK Open Blitz Championship, English Youth Championship, ECF Schools competitions, and the ECF Online Grand Prix. The federation also develops the ECF International Series, which provides internationally rated opportunities and supports competitive development within England.

At international level, the ECF selects England’s teams and individual representatives for the Chess Olympiad, European Team Championships, World Team Championships, youth championships, senior events, and other official FIDE and European competitions. It also manages international entries, FIDE registrations, rating liaison, team selection procedures, and practical support for English representatives.

📊 Ratings, Membership and Chess Development

The ECF operates the national rating system for games played in eligible English competitions. Its online rating database publishes updated ratings and playing records throughout the year. Furthermore, the federation helps organizers submit events for ECF rating and works with FIDE on the registration and international rating of qualifying tournaments.

Membership provides access to rated competition and a range of federation services. The ECF also maintains an events calendar, club finder, national title and Master Points system, membership portal, organizer resources, tournament rules, league-management services, and guidance for players entering competitive chess.

Junior development remains a major priority. The federation supports the English Youth Championship, schools competitions, junior international selection, development pathways, bursaries, training opportunities, and partnerships with youth chess trusts. Therefore, talented young players can progress from local and school chess to national championships and international representation.

The ECF also runs dedicated programs for women and girls, senior players, accessible chess, grassroots development, online chess, and chess in prisons and public spaces. Its women’s chess program encourages greater participation in social and competitive play, while its accessibility work promotes suitable adjustments for players with disabilities or impairments.

In addition, the federation trains and supports arbiters and registered coaches. It provides safeguarding guidance, competition insurance options, regular member communications, and resources for clubs and organizers. Through these services, the English Chess Federation connects grassroots participation with national competition and international chess.
