The 2026 UK Open Blitz Championships – Finals will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at Woodland Grange in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England. Organized by the English Chess Federation, the event concludes a nationwide championship series of 16 qualifiers held across 14 UK cities and brings together the players who have earned places in the Open and Women’s Finals.
Both Finals are played as 16-player, 15-round round-robin tournaments at 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment per move. The games are submitted for FIDE international rating and ECF national rating, while the full playing schedule runs from 12:00 to 17:20 in three intensive five-round blocks. The Finals alone distribute £5,100 in prizes, approximately $6,750, with £1,000 for the Open winner and £500 for the Women’s winner.
Participation is by qualification rather than open entry. The winner of each qualifier earns a place in the Open Final, while the highest-placed female player who has not already qualified for the Open earns a place in the Women’s Final. Players therefore need to confirm their qualification and final-entry status with the ECF before making travel arrangements.

👥 Sections / Groups
The championship contains two separate Finals.
| Final | Format |
|---|---|
| Open Final | 16 qualified players · 15-round round robin |
| Women’s Final | 16 qualified players · 15-round round robin |
Both Finals use the same 3+2 time control, schedule and general tournament rules.
Qualification
The winner of each qualifier earns a place in the Open Final.
For the Women’s Final, the highest-placed female player in each qualifier who has not already qualified for the Open Final earns the corresponding Women’s Final place.
If a female player wins a qualifier, she may choose whether to play in the Open Final or Women’s Final. If she chooses the Open Final, the Women’s place passes to the next eligible female player from that qualifier.
When a qualified player declines a place, the invitation normally passes to the next highest-finishing eligible player under the published qualification rules.
📅 Schedule
All 15 rounds are scheduled on Saturday, November 21.
| Round | Time |
|---|---|
| Round 1 | 12:00 |
| Round 2 | 12:20 |
| Round 3 | 12:40 |
| Round 4 | 13:00 |
| Round 5 | 13:20 |
| Round 6 | 14:00 |
| Round 7 | 14:20 |
| Round 8 | 14:40 |
| Round 9 | 15:00 |
| Round 10 | 15:20 |
| Round 11 | 16:00 |
| Round 12 | 16:20 |
| Round 13 | 16:40 |
| Round 14 | 17:00 |
| Round 15 | 17:20 |
The schedule creates two longer breaks: one after Round 5 and another after Round 10. Otherwise, rounds begin every 20 minutes, so players should remain close to the playing area throughout each five-round block.
📝 Registration
The Finals are not an ordinary open-entry tournament. Players reach Leamington Spa through the UK Open Blitz qualifying series.
There are 16 qualifiers across 14 cities around the United Kingdom. The winner of each qualifier qualifies for the Open Final, while the leading eligible female player qualifies for the Women’s Final under the published qualification rules.
Qualified players should use the official ECF championship pages to verify their invitation and final-entry status:
https://www.englishchess.org.uk/uk-open-blitz-championships-2026/
Questions concerning entries can be sent to:
entries.secretary@englishchess.org.uk
No ECF membership is required to play in the event.
All entrants must normally have a FIDE Identification Number when their entry is submitted. English players without a FIDE ID can have one created when the rating files are submitted if they wish their FIDE nationality to be England.

Leamington Spa Railway Station is approximately 2 miles from Woodland Grange.
The simplest option after arriving by train is a taxi, with the drive typically taking less than 10 minutes when traffic is light.
Public buses also operate toward Blackdown Crossroads, the nearest main-road bus stops to Woodland Grange. Services using this corridor include 11, X17, X18 and U1. Blackdown Crossroads is within a short walk of the venue.
For example, Route 11 connects Leamington Spa with Kenilworth, the University of Warwick and Coventry and serves Blackdown Crossroads regularly.

ℹ️ Other Information
The Finals are both FIDE-rated and ECF-rated.
During play, mobile phones, smartwatches, Fitbits and other electronic devices must be completely switched off and placed in a bag below the table or on the table in front of the player. Players may not carry such devices on their person.
A player loses the game immediately if a prohibited device makes a sound, is found switched on or is found on their person during play.
Players may also be scanned before or after a game as part of the tournament’s anti-cheating procedures.
A player who defaults a game is normally removed from subsequent pairings unless the Chief Arbiter decides otherwise. In such a case, the arbiter may require a £50 bond, which is returned after the player completes all remaining games. A second default results in expulsion from the tournament and loss of the bond.
Parents and guardians remain responsible for children attending the event. The organizers do not act in loco parentis.
Finally, finalists should recheck their qualification status, FIDE ID, allocated rating and Chess-Results entry before travelling. With rounds running every 20 minutes, punctuality and remaining close to the playing hall throughout each session are particularly important.
