Prize Calculation Rules

Place prizes are awarded to the players scoring the most points.

In all tournaments except the British Championship, prize money is shared equally between tied players. Rating prizes are calculated by performance against expected score.

Additional prizes may be won in addition to other prizes. However, when a player qualifies for both a place prize and a rating prize, the player receives the higher-value prize.

Membership Requirements

Players registered to England, or to a federation outside the British Isles, must be Gold members of the English Chess Federation with membership expiring on August 31, 2026 or later.

Players registered to Guernsey, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Scotland, or Wales should be members of their national federation.

All entrants must have a FIDE Identification Number when submitting their entry unless they wish their FIDE nationality to be England.

Entry Fees

An additional £10 / approx. $20 surcharge applies to entries made on the day of an event, if accepted.

Players should check the schedule before entering multiple events because overlapping entries are not allowed unless at least one of the events permits a bye.

🏛️ Organizer

The English Chess Federation organizes the British Chess Championships 2026.

The Championships are the flagship annual British chess festival and include championship sections, rating-limited events, junior and senior tournaments, rapidplay, blitz, team competitions, training activities, commentary, and social chess events.

The 2026 event receives support from The John Robinson Youth Chess Trust CIO and The Chess Trust. Both organizations support chess development, junior chess, and the wider promotion of the Championships.

The British Chess Championships 2026 will be hosted at the University of Warwick in Coventry. The programme uses several campus rooms and event spaces, including the Panorama Suite, Mead Gallery, Rootes Building, Chancellor’s Suite, Learning Grid, and other festival rooms.

Official Bed & Breakfast accommodation is available through the University of Warwick booking system.

The accommodation booking system closes at midnight on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

✈️ How to Get There

The University of Warwick is located in Coventry, in the West Midlands. Players should travel to Coventry Station, not Warwick Station, because Coventry is closer to the University and has better public transport links to campus.

Arrival Advice

Players should allow extra time on the first day of their event. The University of Warwick campus is large, and some events use different rooms across the central campus.

Players staying on campus should check the accommodation check-in time before travel. Hotel-style accommodation at Scarman lists check-in from 15:00 and check-out before 10:00.

Ratings

All tournaments will be submitted to the ECF and FIDE for rating unless a specific event states otherwise.

The June 2026 rating lists are used for entry and section purposes. The August 2026 rating lists are used for pairing purposes.

Pairings

Pairings for classical events are normally published at 21:00 before the next round.

For rapidplay, blitz, team blitz, and quads, pairings are published shortly before the first round or as soon as possible during the event.

British Championship Tie-Break

If there is a tie for first place in the British Championship or Women’s Championship, a playoff will be held as soon as possible after the end of the Championship.

The playoff may include rapid games, blitz games, and a sudden-death game if required.

Defaults

A player who defaults a game may be excluded from the pairings for the next and subsequent rounds unless the Manager allows the player to continue.

A player who defaults a second game will be expelled from the tournament.

Appeals

Players may appeal an arbiter’s decision in writing.

The appeal must be submitted within 30 minutes of the arbiter’s decision or within 30 minutes of the end of the game, whichever is later.

Each appeal requires a £50 / approx. $70 appeal fee. The fee is returned if the appeal is successful or if the Appeals Committee accepts that there were significant grounds for the appeal.

Spectators and Photography

Spectators may take photographs or video only during the permitted time windows.

Mobile phones may not be used to take photographs during play.

A spectator may be asked to leave the playing area if a mobile phone or other device makes a sound, is switched on, or is found about their person during play.

Festival Activities

The wider festival programme includes casual chess, live commentary, junior coaching, arbiters’ seminars, an organisers’ seminar, Chess960/Fischer Random, Bughouse, Hand & Brain, puzzle solving, a quiz, and a Swiss-Manager seminar.
