FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027
The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 will bring eight elite players to WEISSENHAUS Private Nature Luxury Resort in northern Germany from February 12–14, 2027. FIDE and Freestyle Chess jointly stage the official world championship, which returns to the Baltic Sea venue after the inaugural FIDE-recognized edition in 2026.
Freestyle Chess is the modern name used for the format also known as Chess960 or FIDE Fischer Random Chess. Instead of beginning every game from the traditional starting position, the pieces on the back rank start from one of the legal randomized configurations. Consequently, players must solve strategic and developmental problems over the board rather than rely heavily on conventional opening preparation.
The 2027 championship features an exclusive eight-player field assembled through a year-long qualification cycle. Five places have already been secured, while three further qualifiers will emerge from online competition between October 2026 and January 2027. The final lineup will therefore be completed shortly before the championship.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The championship uses the Freestyle Chess / Chess960 format. FIDE also refers to this form of chess as FIDE Fischer Random Chess.
Freestyle Chess changes the initial arrangement of the pieces on the back rank. However, the fundamental rules and objectives of chess remain intact. This structure reduces the role of memorized opening theory and places greater emphasis on calculation, piece coordination and original decision-making from the opening moves.
FIDE has confirmed an eight-player field and describes the championship structure as a compact, high-level knockout competition. However, the organizers have not yet published the complete 2027 technical regulations, including the exact time control, match lengths, tie-break procedures and detailed bracket format.
Therefore, this page does not carry forward technical conditions from the 2026 championship unless the 2027 organizers confirm them separately.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 is an eight-player qualification-only World Championship. It is not an open-entry tournament.

ℹ️ Other Information
🏆 Defending Champion
Magnus Carlsen enters the 2027 cycle as the reigning FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion.
He won the inaugural FIDE-recognized championship in Weissenhaus in February 2026. After reaching the final against Fabiano Caruana, Carlsen won the four-game match 2.5–1.5.
That victory also made him the first champion under the new formal cooperation framework between FIDE and Freestyle Chess.
🌍 Official World Championship Status
The cooperation between FIDE and Freestyle Chess established the competition as an officially recognized FIDE World Championship.
The 2026 event represented the first championship under this new framework. Meanwhile, the decision to return to Weissenhaus in 2027 forms part of a multi-year approach intended to create continuity for the format.
Freestyle Chess continues the competitive tradition previously known through FIDE Fischer Random Chess and Chess960.
🎯 Qualification Cycle
The qualification structure deliberately combines over-the-board and online chess.
Carlsen, Caruana and Abdusattorov qualified through the previous World Championship. Keymer then earned his place through the large over-the-board grenke Freestyle Chess Open, while Pranav qualified through the online Freestyle Friday series.
The remaining three places will also come from online competitive pathways. Therefore, qualification remains active until January 2027.
👩 Women’s World Championship
WEISSENHAUS will host a separate FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship from February 5–7, 2027.
It will also feature eight players. Five women have already qualified: Bibisara Assaubayeva, Harika Dronavalli, Alua Nurman, Dinara Wagner and Anna Muzychuk.
The Women’s Championship and Open World Championship remain separate competitions even though they share the same venue and overall championship framework.
💰 Prize Fund
The organizers have not yet announced the official 2027 prize fund.
The 2026 edition offered a $300,000 prize fund, including $100,000 for the winner. However, that figure applies only to the 2026 championship and should not be assumed for 2027.
For this reason, MyChess.Events will add the 2027 prize fund only after FIDE or Freestyle Chess publishes the official amount.
📌 Final Regulations
FIDE and Freestyle Chess have already confirmed the venue, dates, eight-player field and qualification structure.
However, the final 2027 championship regulations still need to confirm several operational details, including:
exact time control, match structure, daily session times, tie-break procedures and the 2027 prize fund.
MyChess.Events will update these details once the organizers publish the final regulations.
