♟️ About Freestyle Chess
Freestyle Chess is an international chess organization and sports-media company built around the competitive format also known as Chess960 or Fischer Random Chess. The organization was founded in 2024 by Magnus Carlsen and German entrepreneur Jan Henric Buettner following the successful Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge at Weissenhaus in Germany. Its operating company, Freestyle Chess Operations GmbH, is headquartered in Hamburg. Freestyle Chess removes traditional opening preparation by randomizing the starting positions of the back-rank pieces under Chess960 rules. As a result, players must solve unfamiliar positions from the opening moves and rely more heavily on calculation, positional understanding and creativity. The organization has developed this format through elite invitational events, large open tournaments, online qualification pathways and international broadcasts. From its launch, Freestyle Chess has combined professional competition with high-level event production and extensive digital content. Its tournaments have featured many of the world’s leading grandmasters, including Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Gukesh Dommaraju, Levon Aronian, Vincent Keymer, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Arjun Erigaisi. The organization works with tournament venues, commercial partners, online chess platforms and broadcasters to develop Freestyle Chess as an international competitive circuit.🏆 Tournaments & International Events
The first major event under the concept was the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge, held at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort in Germany in February 2024. Its success led to the creation of a broader international tournament structure and the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. During 2025, Freestyle Chess staged major events in Weissenhaus, Paris, Karlsruhe, Las Vegas and South Africa. The program combined closed tournaments featuring elite grandmasters with the grenke Freestyle Chess Open, where a much wider field could compete in the same format. The season concluded in South Africa, completing the first international Grand Slam cycle. The organization subsequently expanded its connection with the official international championship structure. In January 2026, FIDE and Freestyle Chess Operations GmbH signed a cooperation agreement to stage the first official FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship. The inaugural championship took place at Weissenhaus from February 13–15, 2026, with Magnus Carlsen winning the title. Freestyle Chess also forms part of the qualification pathway for future world championships. The grenke Freestyle Chess Open 2026 in Karlsruhe offered World Championship qualification opportunities, while the online Freestyle Friday Championship provides another route into the championship cycle. The next stage continues in 2027. Weissenhaus is scheduled to host the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship from February 5–7, 2027, followed by the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship from February 12–14, 2027.🌍 Freestyle Chess Players Club & Competitive Structure
The Freestyle Chess Players Club was created alongside the international tournament project. It brought together leading grandmasters interested in establishing a regular professional circuit around the format rather than treating Chess960 as an occasional exhibition event. Freestyle Chess therefore developed a recognizable competitive structure with Grand Slam events, championship qualification and dedicated player standings. The organization has also experimented with its own Freestyle rating system, designed specifically around results from qualifying Freestyle competitions. Online competition forms another part of this structure. Freestyle Friday events give leading players and qualifiers regular opportunities to compete between major over-the-board tournaments. Moreover, selected results can influence qualification for the following World Championship cycle. This combination of invitational tournaments, open events and online qualification has gradually widened access to high-level Freestyle Chess. Elite players remain central to the project, but large open tournaments also allow ambitious club players and titled professionals to compete within the same broader event ecosystem.🎥 Media, Broadcasting & Fan Experience
Media presentation has been a major component of Freestyle Chess from the beginning. Events are produced not only as chess tournaments but also as international spectator-sport broadcasts. Player interviews, behind-the-scenes content, live commentary and original entertainment formats appear alongside traditional game coverage. Freestyle Chess has worked with Chess.com on tournament coverage and online qualification. It has also developed broadcast partnerships for major events, including coverage of the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship. Its own website and social channels publish live streams, event highlights, interviews and original video programming throughout the year. The organization also places strong emphasis on the personalities of professional players. Therefore, broadcasts frequently include player reactions, lifestyle content and activities away from the board in addition to game analysis. This approach is intended to make leading chess players more accessible to audiences beyond traditional tournament followers.📚 History & Development
The modern Freestyle Chess project began at Weissenhaus in February 2024. Jan Henric Buettner initiated and hosted the inaugural event, while Magnus Carlsen became a co-founder of the broader organization. Later that year, Freestyle Chess formally began building an international professional circuit. The project expanded rapidly during 2025 through Grand Slam events in Europe, the United States and South Africa. In addition, the grenke festival introduced the format to a much larger open field. This created a bridge between elite invitationals and mass-participation tournament chess. A major institutional milestone followed in 2026, when FIDE and Freestyle Chess established an official World Championship framework. The agreement connected the private organizer’s event platform with FIDE’s international championship structure and created a defined qualification pathway for subsequent editions. Freestyle Chess continues to operate from Hamburg through Freestyle Chess Operations GmbH. The organization remains closely associated with co-founders Magnus Carlsen and Jan Henric Buettner, while its tournament, media and operations teams manage an expanding international program of live and online competition.
