European Youth Team Chess Championship 2027
The European Youth Team Chess Championship 2027 will take place in Mamaia, Constanța, Romania, from June 26 to July 4, 2027. The European Chess Union awarded the championship to Romania, while the Romanian Chess Federation will serve as the host federation for one of Europe’s principal youth team competitions.
The championship brings together young players representing ECU member federations in four separate competitions: Open U12, Girls U12, Open U18 and Girls U18. Teams may represent a national federation, region, city, chess club or school. However, every player on a team must belong to the federation that nominates that team.
Under the current ECU regulations, each competition normally runs over 7 rounds. Open teams field four players, while Girls teams field two players. In addition, every team may register one reserve player.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The championship follows the ECU Tournament Regulations together with the applicable FIDE Laws of Chess.
Each of the four competitions normally uses a 7-round Swiss system. However, if a competition contains eight teams or fewer, ECU regulations call for a Round Robin tournament instead. ECU will approve the final system after organizers know the number of participating teams.
The 2027 invitation has not yet confirmed the exact time control. Therefore, MyChess.Events does not carry forward the previous edition’s time control as a confirmed 2027 condition.
For reference, the 2026 European Youth Team Chess Championship used 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move from move one. The final 2027 invitation will confirm whether Romania uses the same rate of play.
Match Scoring
Team standings use match points.
| Match Result | Match Points |
|---|---|
| 🏆 Team Win | 2 |
| 🤝 Drawn Match | 1 |
| ❌ Team Loss | 0 |
The sum of individual game scores in a match forms the team’s board points.
Consequently, a team that scores more board points than its opponent receives two match points. If both teams score the same number of board points, each receives one match point.
If both teams finish a match with zero board points, neither team receives a match point.
Team Tie-Breaks
If two or more teams finish a Swiss competition with the same number of match points, ECU applies the following tie-break sequence:
- Sonneborn-Berger score based on opponents’ match points and board points
- Total board points scored
- Sum of the board points scored by all opponents
- Sum of the board points of defeated opponents plus half the board points of opponents against whom the team drew
The team with the highest match-point total wins the competition.
Draw Offers
ECU team regulations restrict early draw agreements.
Players may agree to a draw only after Black has completed move 30.
If a player offers a draw earlier, the opponent should call an arbiter. The arbiter may then penalize the player who made the premature offer under the FIDE Laws of Chess.
Default Time
The current ECU regulations establish a 15-minute default time for championship rounds.
Therefore, players and team captains should arrive at the playing venue well before the scheduled starting time.
Individual Board Awards
ECU regulations also provide individual medals based on performance on each board.
To qualify for a board award, a regular player must participate in at least 70% of the rounds. Meanwhile, a reserve player must participate in at least 50% of the rounds.
Performance rating determines the board ranking. ECU then uses additional tie-break criteria if two players achieve the same performance.
🏆 Prize Fund
The organizers have not yet announced a cash prize fund for the 2027 championship. Therefore, no monetary total should be carried over from another edition.
However, the ECU regulations already define the official championship awards.
Team Awards
| Place | Official Award |
|---|---|
| 🥇 1st Place | Championship Cup + Gold Medals |
| 🥈 2nd Place | Silver Medals |
| 🥉 3rd Place | Bronze Medals |
Every member of a winning team, including the players and captain, receives a gold medal. Likewise, team members finishing second and third receive silver and bronze medals.
The organizer may also offer additional prizes or sponsor awards. However, it must announce the conditions for those prizes before the competition starts.
If the organizer later introduces cash prizes and teams finish tied on match points, ECU regulations require the relevant prize money to be shared according to the Hort system.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The European Youth Team Chess Championship contains four independent competitions.

Each ECU member federation may participate in the Open and Girls competitions.
Teams may represent:
- a national federation;
- a region;
- a city;
- a chess club; or
- a school.
Nevertheless, all players on the team must belong to the federation that nominates them.
The organizing federation may also enter or invite additional teams. However, ECU regulations require the final number of participating teams to remain even.
🗓️ Schedule
The officially published championship period is:
June 26–July 4, 2027
The final 2027 invitation has not yet assigned individual rounds, the Technical Meeting, Opening Ceremony or Closing Ceremony to specific times.
However, the championship format already requires 7 rounds unless a smaller field triggers a Round Robin system.
The standard ECU rules normally place the European Youth Team Championship between July 1 and September 15. Nevertheless, the ECU Board may approve exceptional dates. The current international calendar lists the Mamaia championship from June 26, so participants should follow the final 2027 invitation for the definitive program.
Expected Championship Activities
During the championship period, delegations should expect the final program to include:
- arrival and accreditation;
- team registration;
- Captains’ Meeting / Technical Meeting;
- Opening Ceremony;
- seven championship rounds;
- possible free day;
- Closing and Prize-Giving Ceremony; and
- departure.
Exact timings will be added once ECU and the Romanian organizers publish the official invitation.
📝 Registration
The European Youth Team Chess Championship is a federation-based team event rather than a direct individual-entry tournament.
Players and clubs should therefore coordinate participation with their respective ECU member federation.
ECU Entry Fee
The current ECU Rulebook sets the entry fee for the:
European Team Championship for Youth at €100 per team.
This amount represents the ECU entry fee. It does not include any accommodation, meals, organizer charges, airport transfers or other services that the Romanian host may announce in the final invitation.
Team Lists
ECU regulations require participating federations to send the basic team lists to the organizing federation and ECU Tournament Director one month before the scheduled start of the championship.
Federations may modify those lists until:
one day before the Technical Meeting.
Federation Entry Information
Under the ECU General Tournament Regulations, championship entries normally include:
- player’s full name;
- date of birth;
- FIDE ID;
- latest published FIDE rating;
- chief of delegation or accompanying persons;
- team captain; and
- information required for visa arrangements.
The final Romanian invitation will provide the official registration forms, deadlines and payment instructions.

The European Chess Union governs the championship under its tournament regulations. Meanwhile, the Romanian Chess Federation represents the host federation after ECU awarded the 2027 event to Mamaia.
The final invitation will identify the local Organizing Committee, Tournament Director, Chief Arbiter, Technical Delegate and event-specific championship contacts.
🚆 How to Get There
Mamaia is a Black Sea resort directly north of Constanța, one of Romania’s principal coastal cities.
International delegations will have several practical travel options. However, participants should wait for the final championship invitation before assuming that the organizers will provide airport or railway transfers.
✈️ Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport
Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport (CND) serves the Constanța region and is the closest commercial airport to the Mamaia area.
The airport opened its new terminal in March 2026. Its current published destinations include international services involving Istanbul, London and Rome, although airline schedules may change before summer 2027.
From the airport, teams can continue toward Mamaia by road transfer, taxi, private coach or any official championship transport announced later.
✈️ Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport
Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) provides a much larger range of international connections.
CFR rail services connect Henri Coandă Airport with Bucharest North Railway Station. From there, passengers can continue by direct InterRegio trains toward Constanța.
Current CFR services cover the approximately 225 km rail route between Bucharest North and Constanța in a little over two hours on selected direct trains.
After arriving in Constanța, delegations can continue north to Mamaia by taxi, local transport or organizer transfer.
🚆 By Train
Constanța Railway Station provides the principal long-distance rail access to the Romanian Black Sea coast.
CFR Călători operates direct trains between:
Bucharest North ↔ Constanța
Summer services normally increase during the Romanian seaside season. Therefore, late June and early July are generally among the busiest travel periods on this route.
Delegations should check the official CFR timetable closer to the championship.
🚗 By Car
Teams travelling by road can approach Mamaia through Constanța.
Because the exact official playing venue and championship hotels have not yet been announced, drivers should wait for the final accommodation allocation before selecting a navigation destination.
ℹ️ Other Information
🏅 European Championship Titles
The four competitions award official European titles.
The winners receive the titles:
- European Youth Team Champion 2027 – U12
- European Youth Team Champion for Girls 2027 – U12
- European Youth Team Champion 2027 – U18
- European Youth Team Champion for Girls 2027 – U18
ECU also recognizes an Absolute European Youth Team Champion in each age category.
🏆 Absolute European Youth Team Champion
The Absolute title combines the performance of a federation’s Open and Girls teams within the same age category.
ECU first adds the match points from both competitions.
If two federations remain equal, ECU then compares the combined game / board points.
The winning federation receives the title:
Absolute European Youth Team Champion 2027
in the respective U12 or U18 category.
👥 Championship Scale
When ECU opened bidding for the 2027 championship, it used an organizational estimate of approximately:
200 players / 50 teams
This figure helps hosts plan the playing hall, accommodation and logistics. However, it does not represent an entry limit.
The 2026 championship in Pardubice later reached a record 65 teams and 218 players, which demonstrates the event’s growing international scale.
♟️ Latest Championship Format
The 2026 European Youth Team Championship used the same core structure defined by the current ECU regulations:
- U12 and U18;
- separate Open and Girls competitions;
- 7 rounds;
- four boards for Open teams;
- two boards for Girls teams; and
- one reserve permitted.
That edition used 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
However, because the 2027 invitation has not yet confirmed the rate of play, MyChess.Events does not present 90+30 as a final 2027 condition.
🛡️ Fair Play & Anti-Cheating
The championship falls under the ECU Anti-Cheating and Fair Play Regulations together with applicable FIDE rules.
ECU regulations require anti-cheating measures at European Championships. Therefore, teams should expect security procedures, restrictions on electronic devices and compliance with arbiter instructions.
The final invitation may add event-specific accreditation and access rules.
🪪 Player Eligibility
Every participating player must have the right to represent the nominating federation under the applicable FIDE eligibility rules.
Furthermore, all players within a team must belong to the federation that submits that team.
The organizers may require passports or other identification to verify age and federation eligibility.
👨👩👧 Team Captains
Every participating team should have an appointed captain.
Captains play an important operational role because the event uses team match rules rather than individual tournament administration. They also receive medals when their team finishes in the top three.
The final invitation will specify accreditation and Captain’s Meeting procedures.
📌 Final 2027 Invitation
As of the current update, ECU has confirmed Romania / Mamaia as host and the international calendar lists June 26–July 4, 2027.
However, the final 2027 invitation has not yet published several operational details.
These include:
- exact playing hall;
- confirmed 2027 time control;
- detailed round schedule;
- registration platform and final deadline;

- accommodation hotels and rates;
- meals and full-board packages;
