Girls are specifically permitted and encouraged to compete in both the general South Carolina Scholastic Championship on March 20 and this Girls’ Championship on April 10. Participation in one does not prevent participation in the other.

In G/30;d5, each player receives 30 minutes for the entire game. A five-second delay is applied before the clock begins counting down on each move.
There are no separate grade or rating sections, so elementary, middle-school, and high-school players may meet one another depending on their tournament scores and Swiss pairings.

An active US Chess membership is mandatory. Players whose memberships expire before the tournament should renew them through US Chess before the event.
No separate tournament-day check-in is required after registration.
However, a player who does not report to her Round 1 board before her game time expires may be withdrawn from the tournament. Families experiencing a registration or arrival problem should contact the organizer before the first round.

The organizer supplies boards, pieces, and chess clocks. Players therefore do not need to bring tournament equipment.

Nevertheless, players must arrive in time for their first game. A participant who fails to appear at her Round 1 board before the clock expires may be removed from the tournament.
Path to the Haring National Tournament
The tournament champion receives South Carolina’s nomination and financial support to compete in the WIM Ruth Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions.
The Haring is US Chess’s national invitational championship for state girls representatives and has been held annually since 2013. Each state affiliate may nominate a K–12 female representative.
This makes the SC Girls’ Chess Championship more than a state-title tournament: first place creates a direct pathway into one of US Chess’s principal national scholastic invitationals.
Hannah “Tori” Whatley GRIT Award
The second-place representative opportunity is associated with the Hannah “Tori” Whatley GRIT Award.
The award was established by the Whatley family in 2015 to recognize and encourage a South Carolina girl selected for the Susan Polgar Invitational. Hannah “Tori” Whatley became the first South Carolina girl to attend that invitational in 2008, when she was in sixth grade.
She ultimately participated six times and became known for competing successfully against significantly higher-rated opponents. The award is sponsored by Tori and her father, David Whatley, a former South Carolina scholastic chess coordinator.
Recent Championship History
The South Carolina Girls’ Scholastic Championship has continued to grow as a distinct statewide event.
The 2025 edition attracted 22 players and was won by Diya Balamurugan, who became South Carolina’s Haring representative. Abigail Lin finished second and received the GRIT Award / Susan Polgar representative designation.
In 2024, Ashika Nalamalpu won the championship with a perfect 5/5 score, while Aadya Gowdra finished second and received the GRIT Award.
The 2027 championship continues that pathway by giving South Carolina girls a dedicated state competition as well as opportunities to represent the state nationally.

Hanley Chess Academy (HCA) is a chess training and tournament organization based in Southern California, United States. Joe Hanley founded the academy in January 2008 after decades of tournament chess and teaching experience. Today, HCA operates programs in Irvine, Cerritos, Cypress, Anaheim Hills/Yorba Linda, and La Mirada. In addition, the academy provides live online instruction for students outside these locations.
HCA combines group classes, private coaching, online training, scholastic tournaments, US Chess-rated competition, and major festival events. Its teaching system uses an eight-level curriculum created by Joe Hanley. Students advance through structured testing while developing tactical, strategic, and tournament skills. Joe Hanley learned chess from his father at age eight. Later, renowned scholastic chess teacher Dewain Barber introduced him to tournament competition.
Hanley competed seriously from the late 1970s through the early 2000s. During that period, he recorded victories against many master-level players, including Grandmasters and International Masters.
In 1991, he earned the United States Chess Federation Master title. Four years later, he won the Master section at the U.S. Open Championship in Hawaii.
Hanley also developed substantial teaching experience outside chess. Therefore, when he established Hanley Chess Academy in 2008, he combined competitive knowledge with a structured educational approach.
🎓 Chess Training and Player Development
HCA teaches children and adults through several formats. These include weekly group classes, private lessons, online training, and tournament preparation.
The academy uses an eight-level curriculum that covers progressive chess skills. Students take assessments before advancing to the next level. As a result, the program provides a clear pathway from beginner instruction to competitive tournament preparation.

Rather than focusing only on advanced players, the festival combines events for several age and skill groups. Programs can include a Youth Championship, Adult Open, Adult Swiss, youth and adult Blitz, puzzle competitions, warm-up scholastics, beginner events, and non-rated Capture the King tournaments.
The series has expanded beyond Southern California. HCA has organized World Chess Festival events in locations including California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
This festival structure reflects the academy’s wider approach. Strong players receive serious rated competition, while younger and newer players can enter events designed specifically for their experience level.
🌟 Hanley Chess Academy in 2026
HCA has maintained a particularly active tournament schedule during 2026.
The World Chess Festival – Anaheim took place from May 8–10 near Disneyland. Then, HCA brought the festival to Orlando in July with youth, adult, puzzle, Blitz, and other competitions.
The next World Chess Festival – Disneyland is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026 at Hilton Garden Inn Resort Anaheim. Another World Chess Festival will follow in Orlando from December 28–30.
The organization has already published future festivals for Malvern, San Francisco, Orlando, and Las Vegas in 2027. Consequently, the World Chess Festival has developed from a local HCA tournament program into a recurring multi-state series.
