⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Unrated players and newcomers may also enter. However, the rapid tournament still follows the normal FIDE and ECF rating procedures for eligible participants.

After the five rapid rounds, players can join one separate Freestyle game. For this game, AlphaChess follows the official FIDE Chess960 rules.

Before starting the clocks, players receive two minutes to study the generated Chess960 position. Afterwards, both players start with the standard 10+2 time control.

The Freestyle game belongs to the AlphaChess Rapid Freestyle Grand Prix. Consequently, it remains separate from the five-round FIDE Rapid competition and its main prize fund.

🏆 Prize Fund

AlphaChess publishes £215 (approximately $290) in rapid cash prizes when the tournament attracts at least 20 entrants. Therefore, the £215 figure depends on participation rather than representing an unconditional guaranteed prize fund.

The Top Female prize requires at least three female entrants. Moreover, each player may receive only one financial prize from the tournament.

AlphaChess also includes random prizes in its award structure. As a result, players outside the leading places can still receive an award.

In addition, the organizer has promoted a free entry to a 2026 Brainstormchess event as a special non-cash prize. However, this award does not form part of the £215 rapid cash total.

The standard Fusion VI entry fee is £25 (approximately $40). However, ECF membership status can affect the player’s overall cost.

Players who do not hold the required ECF membership may therefore need to pay the published Pay-to-Play charge.

AlphaChess also operates a flexible participation policy. For example, a player who can attend only part of the evening may contact the organizer about a reduced fee where available.

Moreover, the organizer welcomes unrated players and newcomers. Therefore, previous FIDE-rated tournament experience is not necessary simply to enter the event.

Wyllyotts Theatre sits close to Potters Bar railway station. Therefore, players arriving from London can reach the venue without needing a car.

The theatre includes an on-site café. Moreover, players can find a pub directly opposite the venue, while additional cafés, restaurants, fast-food outlets, and supermarkets operate nearby.

Wyllyotts Theatre also provides wheelchair-accessible public areas, lift access, and accessible toilets. In addition, eligible Blue Badge holders can use accessible parking spaces in the adjoining parking areas.

Public parking is available at Wyllyotts Place. However, the council-controlled parking area charges during 08:00–18:30 from Monday to Saturday. Since Round 1 begins at 18:00, drivers arriving before 18:30 should check the applicable parking requirement.

Potters Bar offers direct rail links with London as well as convenient access from the M25 and A1(M). Consequently, players can reach the Friday-evening tournament by either public transport or car.

Fusion Series

AlphaChess introduced Fusion in 2026 as a Friday-evening concept that combines conventional rapid chess with Freestyle Chess. The seven scheduled dates are February 13, April 24, July 17, September 4, October 2, November 20, and December 11.

Therefore, Fusion VI is the sixth event in the seven-round 2026 series. The December event then completes the inaugural Fusion season.

Rapid Freestyle Grand Prix

The Freestyle games contribute to the AlphaChess Rapid Freestyle Grand Prix. However, players do not need to compete in every Fusion event to remain competitive in the overall standings.

Instead, AlphaChess counts each player’s best five performances from the seven available events. Consequently, participants can miss up to two rounds without automatically losing those opportunities from their final scoring total.

The Grand Prix includes two overall sections for trophy purposes.

Flexible Participation and Byes

AlphaChess specifically promotes flexible participation. Therefore, players who cannot complete the full evening can contact the organizer about playing fewer games or another reduced schedule.

For five-round tournaments, AlphaChess’s general policy allows up to two voluntary half-point byes. However, players can receive only a zero-point bye in the final round.

Prize eligibility also depends on participation requirements. In general, players need to take part in at least half of the scheduled games to qualify for a prize.

Electronic Devices and Fair Play

Players must keep mobile phones and other signal-capable electronic devices switched off in the playing area. Moreover, participants should not carry or use an active device during a game.

If a player breaches the electronic-device rules, the tournament team may apply the relevant forfeiture provisions. Therefore, players should switch devices off before each round rather than relying on silent mode.

Juniors and Safeguarding

AlphaChess follows ECF safeguarding policies. However, the organizer does not take responsibility for supervising junior players in place of a parent or guardian.

Therefore, AlphaChess strongly recommends that children attend with a responsible caregiver aged 18 or over. Parents and guardians should also make suitable arrangements for supervision between rounds and after games finish.

Photography

AlphaChess takes photographs at events for its galleries and promotional material. However, players who prefer not to appear in photographs can notify the organizer.

Participants should also ask permission before taking photographs of other players. Consequently, everyone can enjoy the tournament while respecting individual privacy preferences.

Equipment and Refreshments

AlphaChess uses digital chess clocks for the tournament. Therefore, players should handle boards, pieces, and clocks carefully throughout the evening.

The theatre’s café provides an on-site refreshment option. In addition, nearby restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, fast-food outlets, and the pub opposite the theatre give players several alternatives before or after the tournament.
