The 34th Annual Western Class Championships will take place from March 12–14, 2027, at the Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport in Irvine, California. This long-running US Chess Heritage Event offers five rounds of classical competition, $20,000 in guaranteed prizes, and 120 Enhanced US Chess Grand Prix points.

The championship uses seven rating-based sections, from Master through Class E. The Master, Expert, and Class A sections are FIDE rated, while all sections are US Chess rated. Expanded and overlapping rating boundaries give many players the option to compete in the upper part of their normal class or move into the next stronger field.

Players can choose between a traditional three-day schedule beginning Friday evening and a compressed two-day schedule beginning Saturday morning. The main time control is 40/80, SD/30; d30, while the first two games of the accelerated schedule use G/60; d10 before both schedules merge on Saturday afternoon.

The Western Class Championships combines class-based competition with a major guaranteed prize fund, flexible schedules, FIDE-rated upper sections, Mixed Doubles awards, and a separate Saturday-night Blitz Championship.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All players compete in a five-round Swiss tournament. The longer schedule uses the full classical control in every round, while the accelerated schedule compresses its opening two games before merging with the main tournament.

At 40/80, SD/30; d30, players receive 80 minutes for their first 40 moves and another 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second delay throughout.

The two-day schedule uses 60 minutes plus a 10-second delay for its first two rounds. The two schedules then merge for Round 3 at 5:00 PM Saturday.

Half-Point Byes

Players may request half-point byes throughout the tournament.

CCA asks that byes occurring after a player begins the tournament normally be arranged with tournament staff at the event. Advance first-round byes can be selected during online registration.

🏆 Prize Fund

The Western Class Championships offers an unconditionally guaranteed $20,000 prize fund. The published individual, category, bonus, and Mixed Doubles prizes together account for the full amount.

Master Section

The Master section carries the largest individual first prize and additional U2300 awards.

The clear tournament winner, or the tiebreak winner when first place is tied, receives an additional $100 bonus.

Mixed Doubles Bonus Prizes

Players from any section can also form a two-player Mixed Doubles team consisting of one male and one female player.

The two teammates may compete in different sections and on different schedules. Their average rating must be under 2200.

Mixed Doubles registration is free and must be completed at the tournament by 2:00 PM Saturday. A player’s score may count for only one Mixed Doubles team.

Individual unrated-player prize limits do not reduce Mixed Doubles prizes.

Unrated Player Prize Limits

Unrated players may compete in the published unrated-eligible class sections, but maximum individual prize limits apply.

If an unrated player’s finishing position would normally produce a larger prize, the unpaid balance passes to the next eligible player or players in the prize order.

🧩 Sections / Groups

Seven class sections allow competitors to play primarily against opponents within or near their own rating range.

The rating ranges intentionally overlap. For example, a player in the upper portion of one traditional US Chess class may also qualify for the next stronger section. This structure provides controlled opportunities to play up without turning the tournament into a fully open field.

Ratings Used

The tournament uses the March 2027 Official US Chess Rating List.

When a player would otherwise be unrated, an unofficial US Chess rating or US Chess Online Regular rating may be used.

Players may not compete below their US Chess Online Regular rating minus 100 points.

CCA may also use appropriately adjusted FIDE, foreign, club, league, scholastic, state, provincial, or other over-the-board ratings when those ratings indicate a stronger playing level. Players must disclose applicable foreign or FIDE ratings when entering.

🗓️ Schedule

Players may choose either the three-day or two-day schedule. Both schedules merge for the Saturday 5:00 PM round and remain together for the rest of the tournament.

3-Day Schedule

Registration for the three-day schedule closes Friday at 6:00 PM.

2-Day Schedule

Registration for the accelerated schedule closes Saturday at 10:00 AM.

Rounds 1–2 of the two-day schedule use G/60; d10. Beginning with Round 3, both schedules use the full classical time control.

📝 Registration

Entry fees depend on the section and registration date. Players receive the lowest rate by registering online by February 19.

Master Through Class D

The same entry fee applies to the top six sections.

Late online or onsite entry is accepted until one hour before Round 1 of the player’s selected schedule.

Class E

Class E is $40 less at every registration tier.

Discounts and Special Conditions

Southern California Chess Federation members receive a $5 discount on qualifying advance online entry fees.

Players entering online by February 19 can receive an additional $10 hotel-related entry discount by providing their Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport chess-block confirmation number during registration.

Grandmasters receive free entry, with $120 deducted from any prize won.

A current US Chess membership is required. Special one-year US Chess membership options are available through the CCA online registration system.

Re-Entry

Re-entry costs $60.

Master-to-Master re-entry is not permitted.

The hotel offers an on-site restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, business center, meeting facilities, and complimentary airport transportation.

A special chess hotel room block and chess parking rate are arranged for tournament participants. Exact 2027 hotel and parking rates should be checked through ChessEvents.US before booking because they may change or sell out.

Players staying at the official hotel also help support the tournament’s meeting-space arrangements.

🚆 How to Get There

The venue is particularly convenient for players flying into John Wayne Airport / Orange County (SNA).

The Hilton is located directly across from John Wayne Airport. The hotel currently provides a complimentary airport shuttle upon request, making SNA by far the most convenient airport for tournament travelers.

Players arriving through LAX or Long Beach Airport should arrange a rental car, taxi, rideshare, or another ground-transfer option.

ℹ️ Other Information

Bring Your Own Chess Equipment

The organizer does not supply tournament equipment.

Players should bring a chess set, board, and clock whenever possible.

Electronic Devices

CCA applies strict electronic-device rules during tournament play. Players should not possess an active cellphone while playing.

The organizer recommends leaving phones in the hotel room, car, or home. A phone brought into the tournament area should remain stored according to the tournament director’s instructions rather than carried on the player’s person during a game.

Prize Payments

CCA encourages prizewinners to receive their prizes at the tournament whenever possible.

Players receiving $600 or more may be required to provide the tax identification information required under U.S. law before payment can be issued.

Prizes not collected at the tournament may be processed afterward electronically or by other CCA payment methods, and processing can take several weeks.

11th Annual Western Class Blitz Championship

A separate 11th Annual Western Class Blitz Championship will be held at the same hotel on Saturday, March 13, 2027.

The Blitz is a four-round double-round Swiss, meaning players play eight blitz games in total.

The Blitz is entered onsite only. It is expected to finish at approximately 11:30 PM.

For pairings and prizes, the organizer uses the higher of the player’s US Chess Regular or Blitz rating.

Players may take one pair of half-point byes in the Blitz, provided they commit before Round 2.

Heritage Event and Grand Prix

The Western Class Championships is listed by US Chess as a Heritage Event and awards 120 Enhanced Grand Prix points, adding national Grand Prix significance to the class-based championship format.
