⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
All three sections are played over four rounds.
The time control is:
G/65 + 5-second increment per move
Each player receives 65 minutes for the entire game, with five seconds added after every move.
Accelerated Pairings
The tournament uses accelerated pairings with Variation 28R3 (Sixths) when a section has at least 12 players.
The organizer also accepts requests to avoid pairings between:
- family members;
- friends;
- members of the same chess club.
Sections will not be merged, although cross-section pairings may be used where necessary.

Kevin Hyde is an experienced United States chess organizer, tournament director, and arbiter whose work spans rated tournament activity in North Carolina and Arizona. He has organized and directed local club events, scholastic competitions, US Chess Grand Prix tournaments, and FIDE-rated events. In 2026, his activity includes tournaments in the Hendersonville and Saluda areas of North Carolina as well as a growing program in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Hyde has been involved in organized chess for many years. He served as President of the North Carolina Chess Association from 2014 through 2018 and remains connected with tournament activity in western North Carolina. His recurring events include the Orchard Lake tournament series, while he has also worked as Chief Arbiter for the long-running Land of the Sky tournament in Asheville. Moreover, US Chess records continue to list him as the organizer or contact for rated tournaments during 2026.
In Northern Arizona, Hyde is currently developing the Coconino Open and additional rated chess opportunities in Flagstaff. He is the organizer and Chief Arbiter of Coconino Open I 2026, scheduled for November 6–8, 2026. 🏆 2026 Tournament Activity
Hyde has maintained an active tournament schedule during 2026. In March, he organized the H’ville Championship in Hendersonville, North Carolina, as a four-round tournament played across four Tuesday evenings.
On May 9, he served as the registration contact for the Henderson County Open Rapid and Scholastic Championships at Henderson County Public Library. The program combined a free US Chess quick-rated Open tournament with a scholastic championship for local students. The scholastic competition included a $500 college scholarship for the winner.
Later that month, Hyde organized Orchard Lake XXVIII on May 30 at Orchard Lake Campground in Saluda. The tournament continued an established series associated with western North Carolina chess. It used a four-round Swiss format with Open, Under 1700, and Under 1200 sections and offered a $900 prize fund.
♜ Tournament Direction and Arbiting
Hyde regularly works on events where tournament administration and arbiting form a central part of his role. At the Land of the Sky XXXVIII tournament program in Asheville in early 2026, he served as Chief Arbiter, including for the FIDE-rated blitz competition.
FIDE identifies him under FIDE ID 2056313 and currently records his arbiter classification as National Arbiter. His principal upcoming event is Coconino Open I, scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Flagstaff. The five-round Swiss will offer Open, U1200, and U700 sections. All sections will receive US Chess rating, while the Open section will also be FIDE rated.
