20th Annual SPICE Cup Open 2026
The 20th Annual SPICE Cup Open 2026 takes place from November 4 to 9, 2026, at Hilton Bellevue in Bellevue, Washington. Co-hosted by the Susan Polgar Foundation and the Washington Chess Federation, the tournament brings strong titled players and ambitious norm seekers together in one competitive international section.
The main event is a nine-round Swiss tournament rated by both FIDE and US Chess. Players compete with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Moreover, the organizers have structured the field to make GM, IM, WGM, and WIM norms possible, subject to all applicable FIDE requirements.
The tournament also offers a $12,500 guaranteed prize fund, substantial first-place prizes, rating-category awards, and additional special prizes. Meanwhile, the weekend includes separate FIDE-rated SPICE Cup Blitz and Rapid Championships, creating a full program of classical, blitz, and rapid chess at the same venue.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The 20th Annual SPICE Cup Open uses a nine-round Swiss system. In addition, both FIDE and US Chess will rate the classical tournament.
Each player receives 90 minutes for the entire game plus 30 seconds after every move from move one. Therefore, the time control appears as G/90; +30 in the official announcement.
The organizers will use the November 2026 FIDE rating list when determining pairings and prize eligibility. Consequently, players should not rely on an earlier FIDE rating when checking their tournament status or rating-category prize eligibility.

🏆 Prize Fund
The official US Chess announcement lists a $12,500 guaranteed prize fund. The event offers three overall prizes, two rating-category prize pairs, and three special awards.

| ✨ Brilliancy Prize | $100 |
The official announcement states a $12,500 guaranteed total. However, the individually published awards add up to $12,600 if every listed special prize is paid in addition to the other categories. Therefore, players should treat the organizer’s published $12,500 amount as the guaranteed headline prize fund and contact the organizer if they need clarification on the final allocation.
All tournament prizes will be paid within eight weeks after the tournament ends. Prize checks are issued only to the actual prize winner rather than to a third party.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The SPICE Cup Open has one section only. Therefore, all eligible competitors play in the same nine-round Swiss tournament.
| Section | Eligibility |
|---|---|
| SPICE Cup Open | Minimum FIDE rating 2000 or minimum US Chess rating 2200 |
The published minimum requirement is 2000 FIDE or 2200 US Chess. Furthermore, players must hold a current US Chess membership when the tournament takes place.
The stronger single-section structure supports the event’s international norm opportunities. However, every GM, IM, WGM, or WIM norm still depends on the final field, opponents, federation mix, ratings, individual performance, and all other applicable FIDE title regulations.
