Hanley Chess Academy (HCA) is a chess training and tournament organization based in Southern California, United States. Joe Hanley founded the academy in January 2008 after decades of tournament chess and teaching experience. 📜 History and Development

Joe Hanley learned chess from his father at age eight. Later, renowned scholastic chess teacher Dewain Barber introduced him to tournament competition.

Hanley competed seriously from the late 1970s through the early 2000s. During that period, he recorded victories against many master-level players, including Grandmasters and International Masters.

In 1991, he earned the United States Chess Federation Master title. Four years later, he won the Master section at the U.S. Open Championship in Hawaii.

Hanley also developed substantial teaching experience outside chess. Therefore, when he established Hanley Chess Academy in 2008, he combined competitive knowledge with a structured educational approach.

🎓 Chess Training and Player Development

HCA teaches children and adults through several formats. These include weekly group classes, private lessons, online training, and tournament preparation.

The academy uses an eight-level curriculum that covers progressive chess skills. Students take assessments before advancing to the next level. As a result, the program provides a clear pathway from beginner instruction to competitive tournament preparation.

🏆 Local Tournament Activity

In Irvine, HCA organizes recurring Sunday scholastic tournaments at Golden Sunshine Academy. These events use a Quad format at G/45;d5 and receive US Chess rating.

🌍 World Chess Festival

The World Chess Festival has become Hanley Chess Academy’s principal large-scale tournament project.

Rather than focusing only on advanced players, the festival combines events for several age and skill groups. Programs can include a Youth Championship, Adult Open, Adult Swiss, youth and adult Blitz, puzzle competitions, warm-up scholastics, beginner events, and non-rated Capture the King tournaments.

The series has expanded beyond Southern California. HCA has organized World Chess Festival events in locations including California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

This festival structure reflects the academy’s wider approach. Strong players receive serious rated competition, while younger and newer players can enter events designed specifically for their experience level.

🌟 Hanley Chess Academy in 2026

HCA has maintained a particularly active tournament schedule during 2026.

The World Chess Festival – Anaheim took place from May 8–10 near Disneyland. Then, HCA brought the festival to Orlando in July with youth, adult, puzzle, Blitz, and other competitions.

The next World Chess Festival – Disneyland is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026 at Hilton Garden Inn Resort Anaheim. Another World Chess Festival will follow in Orlando from December 28–30.

The organization has already published future festivals for Malvern, San Francisco, Orlando, and Las Vegas in 2027. Consequently, the World Chess Festival has developed from a local HCA tournament program into a recurring multi-state series.
