♟️ About Charlotte Chess Center

Charlotte Chess Center (CCC) is a chess academy, club, and tournament organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Its roots date to 2007, when Peter Giannatos and Gary Newsom began organizing local tournaments that developed into the Queen City Chess Association. On March 7, 2014, the organization opened its first permanent facility as the Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy. Today, CCC operates dedicated locations in South and North Charlotte and combines chess education, regular club play, scholastic programs, and large US Chess and FIDE-rated tournaments.

CCC provides an unusually extensive year-round chess program for children, adults, beginners, club players, titled competitors, and players pursuing international titles. Its current activities include school chess programs, academy classes, camps, private instruction, weekly rated play, scholastic tournaments, rapid and blitz events, major open tournaments, and GM/IM norm invitationals. The organization reports more than 3,000 students receiving weekly instruction and more than 2,700 players participating in its rated events annually. In addition, CCC works with more than 60 school programs across the Charlotte metropolitan area.

FM Peter Giannatos is the Founder and Executive Director of Charlotte Chess Center. He is also a FIDE International Organizer, International Arbiter, and US Chess National Tournament Director. CCC remains extremely active in 2026. Following the inaugural Naroditsky Memorial in July and numerous summer tournaments, its next major competition is the Fall Southeastern FIDE from September 5–7, 2026. The calendar then continues with the Charlotte Fall Open, North Carolina Open, North American Junior Championships, and Charlotte Winter Classic.

📜 History and Development

The organization’s development began with the Reverse Angle tournaments in 2007. By 2008, the Queen City Chess Association was running weekly rated chess at the Asian Herald Library, regularly attracting dozens of players.

Chess education became a larger priority in 2012, when Peter Giannatos and Dominique Myers began organizing chess camps. Community fundraising in 2013 then produced more than $30,000 toward the creation of a permanent chess center.

The first Charlotte Chess Center facility opened in 2014. Two years later, CCC launched the Carolinas Classic, which became a cornerstone of its tournament calendar. The organization also began running FIDE norm invitationals in 2016, creating regular opportunities for players seeking GM and IM norms.

US Chess named Charlotte Chess City of the Year in 2018 and selected Charlotte Chess Center as Chess Club of the Year in 2019. CCC expanded again in 2023, opening its second permanent location in North Charlotte.

🎓 Chess Education and Player Development

Education remains a core part of CCC’s work. The organization provides academy classes, school programs, camps, private instruction, elite training, and competitive development programs.

Its school network now reaches more than 60 locations, while its two dedicated centers provide instruction and tournament opportunities throughout the week. The Main/South location serves southern Charlotte from Kettering Drive, while CCC North operates from Prosperity Park Drive.

For stronger juniors, CCC has developed programs that connect professional coaching directly with competitive goals. The Elite Chess Team, launched in 2021 by Peter Giannatos and GM Daniel Naroditsky, grew from 15 students into a program with more than 70 participants.

CCC also runs frequent scholastic competitions, including rated tournaments, Action Quads, state championship events, and its Tournament of Champions qualification system. Therefore, students can move from introductory instruction into regular rated tournament chess without leaving the organization.

🏆 Rated Tournaments and International Competition

Tournament organization is one of Charlotte Chess Center’s defining activities. In 2025 alone, CCC conducted more than 375 rated tournaments.

Weekly and monthly events include Tuesday Night Action, Wednesday Action Quads, Friday Action Quads, Sunday Classical tournaments, FIDE Saturdays, Reverse Angle, rapid tournaments, blitz events, and scholastic competitions. Many of these events receive both US Chess and FIDE rating.

At a larger scale, CCC organizes tournaments such as the Carolinas Classic, Charlotte Open, Southeastern FIDE Championships, Charlotte Fall Open, North Carolina Open, US Masters, and Charlotte Winter Classic.

The organization has also developed a sustained program of GM and IM norm invitationals. These tournaments bring titled players and ambitious competitors to Charlotte throughout the year and provide structured opportunities to achieve FIDE title norms.

🌟 Major 2026 Events

A particularly significant 2026 project was the inaugural Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz, held from July 3–5 at Charlotte Marriott City Center. The event honored former CCC Grandmaster-in-Residence Daniel Naroditsky, who died in October 2025.

The Memorial included Masters and Challengers competitions followed by a high-level Blitz Final. Entry fees and spectator proceeds supported the Naroditsky Memorial Fund, which had surpassed $1 million by early 2026. The fund supports both the annual memorial tournament and the Naroditsky Fellowship for aspiring masters.

CCC’s autumn calendar begins with the Fall Southeastern FIDE from September 5–7, 2026, followed by the Charlotte Fall Open from October 2–4 with a $6,000 combined guaranteed prize program including its blitz event.

Later in the year, Charlotte Chess Center will organize the North Carolina Open from November 27–29 and the North American Junior Championships from December 18–23, 2026. The latter is the official continental U20 championship for North America and offers direct FIDE titles and title norms to medalists.

The year concludes with the Charlotte Winter Classic from December 26–28, which offers a $7,000 guaranteed prize fund across four sections.
