♟️ About Charlotte Chess Center

Charlotte Chess Center (CCC) is a major chess education and tournament organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Its roots go back to local tournament activity that began in 2007, while the first permanent Charlotte Chess Center facility opened on March 7, 2014. Today, CCC operates dedicated locations in South and North Charlotte and combines academy instruction, school programs, club chess, national events, FIDE-rated tournaments, and elite player development.

CCC runs chess activities throughout the week for children, adults, beginners, club players, masters, and players pursuing international titles. Its programs include academy classes, camps, school chess, private instruction, casual play, scholastic tournaments, rated events, GM/IM norm invitationals, and major open competitions. The organization currently reports 3,000+ students receiving weekly instruction, more than 60 school programs, and over 2,700 unique players participating in rated events each year.

FM Peter Giannatos is the Founder and Executive Director and remains the principal operational contact. He is also a FIDE International Organizer, International Arbiter, and US Chess National Tournament Director. During 2026, CCC has maintained an exceptionally active competition calendar. Its major remaining events include the Charlotte Fall Open, 2026 US Masters, North Carolina Open, North American Junior Championships, and Charlotte Winter Classic.

📜 History and Development

The organization’s development began with the Reverse Angle tournaments in 2007. Peter Giannatos and Gary Newsom then developed the Queen City Chess Association, which established weekly rated chess at the Asian Herald Library in 2008. Education became a larger part of the project in 2012, when Giannatos and Dominique Myers began running chess camps. Then, in 2013, community supporters raised more than $30,000 toward a permanent chess facility.

The Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy officially opened in 2014. Two years later, CCC launched the Carolinas Classic, which remains one of its flagship competitions. In 2016, the center also began organizing FIDE norm invitationals. US Chess recognized Charlotte as Chess City of the Year in 2018. The following year, Charlotte Chess Center itself received the 2019 Chess Club of the Year award.

CCC expanded again in 2023, opening a second permanent location in North Charlotte.

🎓 Chess Education and Player Development

Education remains one of CCC’s core activities. Its school network now reaches more than 60 locations across the Charlotte metropolitan area, while dedicated academy facilities provide structured instruction for players from beginner to master level. The coaching staff includes grandmasters, national masters, women’s titled players, tournament directors, and professional instructors. Current head coaches include GM Olexandr Bortnyk, GM Kayden Troff, and GM Ashwin Jayaram, alongside a wider team of experienced coaches.

CCC also operates advanced-development programs for ambitious juniors. Moreover, its Elite Chess Team and mentorship structures help stronger players progress toward national and international titles. The center’s educational work is closely linked with competitive play. Students can move from beginner events into regular US Chess tournaments, FIDE-rated competitions, and ultimately elite national or norm-level events.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Tournament organization is another defining part of Charlotte Chess Center. CCC runs events throughout the year across classical, rapid, blitz, scholastic, and invitational formats. Its major tournament portfolio includes the Carolinas Classic, Charlotte seasonal Opens, Southeastern FIDE events, US Masters, North Carolina Open, Charlotte Winter Classic, and regular GM/IM norm tournaments. The scale of this activity expanded sharply by 2025. CCC reports that it conducted more than 375 rated tournaments during that year and served more than 2,700 unique rated players.

The organization also maintains an official over-the-board partnership with Chess.com, established in 2024. This partnership supports major live events and connects CCC’s physical tournament program with digital chess audiences.

🌟 2026 US Masters and International Events

The 2026 US Masters will take place from November 25–29, 2026 at Hilton Charlotte University Place. Charlotte Chess Center is the official event organizer. The tournament is FIDE- and US Chess-rated and carries a $27,500 prize fund. It is designed for titled players, masters, and qualifying elite juniors. As a result, the US Masters remains one of CCC’s most important annual high-level events.

CCC will also organize the 2026 North American Junior Championships from December 18–23 at the same Charlotte venue. This is the official Continental Junior Championship of North America for players from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The championship offers direct FIDE titles and norm opportunities to medalists in the Open U20 and Girls U20 sections. Therefore, CCC’s late-2026 calendar combines elite adult competition with a major international junior championship.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

FM Peter Giannatos leads Charlotte Chess Center as Founder and Executive Director. His responsibilities include overall operations, tournament organization, education, and long-term development. The senior team also includes Dr. Walter High as Vice President for Planning and Development, Grant Oen as Senior Events Manager, Ursula Smith as Director of School Programs, and Maya Myers as Senior Tournament Director.

In addition, CCC employs a large professional coaching and administrative team. This structure allows the organization to operate two permanent facilities while simultaneously managing school programs, daily club activity, and major national tournaments.
