The 2026 South Carolina Senior Championship takes place from December 11–13, 2026, at the Columbia Chess Club in Columbia, South Carolina. Players from all U.S. states who are age 50 or older may enter the championship. However, only an eligible South Carolina player can earn the official state title.
Competitors may choose either a three-day schedule starting Friday evening or a two-day schedule starting Saturday morning. Both groups merge before Round 3 and then complete the same five-round Swiss tournament. In addition, most games use a classical G/90+15 time control and count for both USCF and FIDE ratings.
The highest-finishing eligible South Carolina player becomes the South Carolina Senior Champion. As a result, that player also qualifies for the John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions.

ℹ️ Other Information
🏅 South Carolina Senior Champion
Players from every U.S. state may compete for cash prizes. However, the highest-finishing eligible South Carolina player earns the state championship title.
That player also qualifies to represent South Carolina in the John T. Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions. Therefore, the event serves as both a state championship and a national qualifying tournament.
⚖️ State Championship Tiebreak
If two or more South Carolina players share the best score, they contest an unrated G/5+3 playoff to determine the state champion.
When exactly two players tie, they play a two-game match with alternating colors. If more than two players share first place, they instead play a round-robin playoff.
A further tie leads to another playoff among the players who remain level. As a result, the process continues until one player wins the state title.
The playoff determines the championship title and trophy only. It does not change the tournament’s cash-prize distribution.
During the blitz playoff, a player’s first illegal move brings a one-minute penalty. A later illegal move follows the applicable blitz rules and may result in a loss when the opponent has sufficient mating material.
➗ Byes
Each player may request one half-point bye in any round, including Round 5.
Players should request the bye during advance registration or before the tournament starts. After play begins, the organizers normally allow only zero-point byes.
However, the Chief Tournament Director may approve a half-point bye in unusual circumstances.
📺 Live Games and Standings
The organizers plan to broadcast the top boards live on Chess.com and Twitch. In addition, players and spectators can follow live standings, registrations and pairings online during the championship.
🏨 Accommodation
The Columbia Chess Club sits near Harbison Boulevard and Columbiana Centre, where players can find numerous hotels. In fact, the organizer notes that 19 hotels lie within approximately two miles of the club.
Rather than offering a tournament group rate, the organizer recommends comparing available hotel prices directly. Therefore, players can choose accommodation according to their budget and travel preferences.
