2027 South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championship

The 2027 South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championship takes place on March 20, 2027, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, South Carolina. The championship is open exclusively to South Carolina residents in grades K–12 and serves as the official qualifying event for the state individual finals.

Players compete in four grade-based sections: High School, Middle School, Elementary School and Primary School. Each section uses a five-round Swiss format with a G/30;d5 time control. In addition, every section is US Chess rated.

The top eight players in each section advance to the South Carolina Scholastic State Finals on April 3, 2027. Meanwhile, school teams compete for separate championship trophies based on their leading individual scores.

Each section consists of five Swiss rounds at G/30;d5. Therefore, every player receives 30 minutes for the game, with a five-second delay per move.

The event combines individual and school-team competition. Consequently, US Chess Rule 28N applies.

Players compete only in the section that matches their grade level. Therefore, playing up into an older section is not permitted.

The championship focuses on trophies, state titles and qualification opportunities rather than cash prizes.

School Team Awards

The top three schools in the following divisions receive team trophies:

  • High School
  • Middle School
  • Elementary School

Team standings use the combined scores of a school’s best four players.

For Elementary team awards, players from both Elementary K–5 and Primary K–3 count toward the same school’s Elementary team score. Therefore, a player may enter either eligible section and still contribute to the school team result.

Students in grades K–3 may choose the Primary section. However, they may also qualify for the broader K–5 Elementary section according to the published eligibility structure.

The separate 2027 South Carolina Girls’ Chess Championship takes place on April 10, 2027 and requires a separate registration.

Lunch will be available for purchase from the Convention Center concessions. In addition, players should note the venue’s no outside food or drink policy.

Registration is online only and is restricted to South Carolina residents.

Registration closes at 8:30 AM on March 20, 2027.

An active US Chess membership is required. Therefore, players should confirm that their USCF membership remains valid before registering.

There is no on-site check-in. Players should report directly to their first-round board. However, a player who fails to appear before the first-round time expires will be withdrawn from the tournament.

All chess equipment is provided by the organizers.

The tournament takes place on the lower level of the Convention Center in the Lexington and Richland meeting rooms. Separate playing areas help provide suitable conditions for the different age divisions.

In addition, hallway seating is available near the tournament rooms for players and families between rounds.

Every State Finals participant receives a trophy according to their finishing position. Most importantly, the winner of each section earns the corresponding South Carolina State Champion title.

For State Finals tiebreak purposes, the player’s score from the March 20 championship serves as the first tiebreak.

🇺🇸 National Championship Qualification

The South Carolina Chess Association awards each section champion an invitation and stipend to represent South Carolina at the corresponding national state-champion tournament.

The national invitational tournaments will take place during the 2027 U.S. Open Championship in Dallas, Texas, August 2–8, 2027.

These national competitions feature $5,000 top scholarship prizes.

👥 School Team Competition

A school does not need a separate team registration. Instead, players enter individually and identify their school during registration.

The organizer calculates each team score from the best four individual scores from that school. Therefore, schools with four or more participants can field a complete scoring team.

Players should enter the full official name of their school, rather than a chess club or another affiliation.

📺 Live Coverage

Pairings and standings will be available online in real time. In addition, the organizers plan to broadcast top boards by video on Twitch and Chess.com.

🍽️ Food and Venue Rules

The Convention Center will operate a concessions stand during the event. Therefore, players and families can purchase lunch on site.

The venue normally prohibits outside food and beverages. However, families with food allergies or special dietary requirements may contact the Convention Center in advance to discuss suitable arrangements.

👧 Girls’ Championship

The 2027 South Carolina Girls’ Chess Championship takes place separately on April 10, 2027, at the Columbia Chess Club.

Girls may compete in both the March 20 South Carolina Scholastic Championship and the April 10 Girls’ Championship. However, the Girls’ Championship requires a separate registration.
