The Grand Chess Tour, commonly known as the GCT, is an international circuit of elite chess tournaments featuring many of the world’s leading grandmasters. The organization operates from St. Louis, Missouri, while its events take place in major cities across Europe, the United States, and other international destinations.
The Tour began in 2015 as a coordinated series of three classical tournaments with matching formats and playing conditions. Garry Kasparov inspired the project and helped strengthen the partnership between the original organizers. Then, in 2016, the circuit expanded to include rapid and blitz chess. This development created a broader season-long competition that tests players across several time controls.
Michael Khodarkovsky serves as Executive Director of the Grand Chess Tour. He oversees the circuit’s competitive direction together with its board, tournament partners, arbiters, venue teams, media staff, and supporting organizations. In 2026, former United States Champion Alex Onischuk also returned as Deputy Executive Director, while International Arbiter Ignatius Leong was appointed Chief Arbiter for the season.
🏆 Tournament Circuit
The Grand Chess Tour combines classical, rapid, and blitz chess within one season-long championship. Full-tour players compete across several events and earn points according to their final positions. Individual tournaments also include selected wildcard players, allowing leading national players, emerging stars, and other elite grandmasters to join particular stages.
The 2026 season includes Super Rapid & Blitz Poland in Warsaw, Super Chess Classic Romania in Bucharest, Super Rapid & Blitz Croatia in Zagreb, Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, the Sinquefield Cup, and the season-ending GCT Finals in Saint Louis.
The three rapid-and-blitz events each offer a prize fund of $200,000. Meanwhile, the two classical tournaments each offer $350,000. Additional classical-win bonuses reward decisive play, while the GCT Finals provide a separate $450,000 prize purse.
