📜 History and Development

Club d’Escacs Cornellà was founded in 1942 by chess enthusiasts from Cornellà who wanted to promote chess, cultural activity, and social interaction in the city. The club later established a long relationship with the Patronat Cultural i Recreatiu, which remains its home today. For many years, Pere Parés i Valls played a central role in the organization. He served as President from 1959 until 2017, a period of 58 years, and later became Honorary President. Nicolás Plaza Arcos succeeded him as President in 2017. Chess education also became a major part of the club’s identity. Nicolás Plaza created the club’s chess school in 1975, and the school has subsequently trained generations of Cornellà players. Today, the organization continues to expand this educational work through dedicated groups for children, young players, and adults.

Club d’Escacs Cornellà participates actively in the Lliga Catalana with several teams. This structure allows experienced competitors, developing adults, and younger players from the chess school to represent the club at different competitive levels. During the 2026 Lliga Catalana, Cornellà’s A team successfully retained its place in Segona Divisió – Barcelona. Cornellà formed its first complete women’s league team in 2025, while its youth school has consistently produced a strong female representation in regional competitions.

The II Obert Femení Club d’Escacs Cornellà 2026 is scheduled across seven Saturdays from September 19 to November 14, 2026 at the Patronat Cultural i Recreatiu. The tournament is open to female players licensed with the Federació Catalana d’Escacs. It uses a seven-round Swiss system and a classical time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. Nicolás Plaza Arcos serves as Tournament Director, while Francisco Xavier Solera is Chief Arbiter. The competition includes overall prizes as well as rating, veteran, and junior categories. After launching the first edition in 2025, the club is continuing the tournament as part of its broader effort to increase female participation in competitive chess.

The XII Open Club d’Escacs Cornellà – Memorial Dr. Josep Vallvè i Piñol is the club’s principal FIDE-rated classical tournament. The 2026 edition is scheduled from September 21 to November 23, with rounds played on Monday evenings. Players will contest nine Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The tournament counts for both FIDE and Catalan ratings and has a maximum announced capacity of 101 participants.
