♟️ About Agrupación de Ajedrez Ruy López

Agrupación de Ajedrez Ruy López is a nonprofit chess organization based in Zafra, Extremadura, Spain. The club belongs to the Federación Extremeña de Ajedrez and organizes competitive tournaments, team chess, junior training, school activities, cultural projects, and community chess. Moreover, its identity is closely connected with Ruy López de Segura, the influential 16th-century chess player and theoretician who was born in Zafra.

The association officially began on June 13, 1988. Juan Fernández Muñoz became its first President, while Juan José Amaya Suárez, Francisco Toro Peguero, Carlos Macías Blanco, and Agustín Risco Chamizo formed the original leadership team. However, organized chess in Zafra has deeper roots. An earlier Ruy López chess club operated from 1962 to 1972, and local enthusiasts continued meeting in later decades before creating the present association.

Daniel Gragera Ledesma currently serves as President. He first took office in 2021 and won reelection for another four-year term in 2025. In addition, Pedro Guerrero joined the renewed leadership as Vice President. Gragera remains the principal public contact and takes an active role in tournament organization, chess education, cultural projects, and the promotion of Ruy López de Segura’s historical legacy.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Agrupación de Ajedrez Ruy López maintains an extensive team structure in the Campeonato de Extremadura por Equipos. This allows experienced players, developing juniors, and veteran members to compete at several levels within the same organization.

The club fielded five teams during the 2026 regional season. Ruy López A finished fifth in División de Honor, the highest Extremadura division. Meanwhile, Ruy López B finished runner-up in Primera División.

The club also achieved significant results in the lower divisions. Ruy López C won its 2ª A group, while Clínica Dental Tomillo Ruy López D earned promotion from 2ª B to 2ª A. Therefore, the association combines top-division representation with a broad development structure for other members.

Individual club players have also recorded strong results during 2026. Young players and senior members regularly compete across Extremadura and elsewhere in Spain, while titled players have also represented the association in major open tournaments.

🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development

Youth development has formed part of the club’s work for decades. The association already documented chess instruction for children in the early 1990s, and today it continues to run training activities in cooperation with local institutions.

Its younger players compete in JUDEX, regional age-group championships, school competitions, national events, and the club’s own tournaments. Consequently, juniors can move from introductory instruction into federation competition and eventually into the association’s adult teams.

The 2026 season produced several notable results. Raúl Gutiérrez Toro became the Extremadura Juvenile Boys Champion for the second consecutive year and earned selection to represent Extremadura at the Spanish Autonomous Communities Championship. In addition, four club members formed part of the IES Suárez de Figueroa team that finished runner-up at the 2026 Spanish School Team Championship.

The club also achieved strong results in girls’ chess. During the 2026 Extremadura women’s finals, club player Pilar Díaz García won the championship, while María Crespo finished runner-up.

These results complement the association’s grassroots program. The club works with schools, organizes promotional events, and gives younger members opportunities to compete alongside experienced players.

🏆 Tournaments, Chess Culture and Ruy López Heritage

Tournament organization is one of the defining activities of Agrupación de Ajedrez Ruy López. Its calendar combines classical, rapid, blitz, junior, and cultural events.

The Open Internacional Ciudad de Zafra is one of its longest-running competitions. The first edition took place in 1989, shortly after the association’s creation. After a pandemic interruption, the club revived the tournament in 2023 and continued the series with major international rapid events.

Another recurring project is the De la Luna al Fuego tournament. The 2026 edition reached its 11th year and formed part of Zafra’s wider historical and cultural celebrations. Meanwhile, the Chess and Cheese tournament combines chess with the city’s artisan cheese fair.

The association also promotes Ruy López through activities beyond competition. These include exhibitions, literary events, historical routes, living-chess performances, lectures, school activities, and the Certamen Literario Ruy López.

In 2026, this work gained an important new context when the Junta de Extremadura officially granted Zafra the honorary title “Capital Extremeña del Ajedrez.” The city’s connection with Ruy López formed a central part of that recognition. Moreover, Daniel Gragera and his brother Francisco de Asís Gragera have researched and published extensively about the historic player.

🌟 VI Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Ruy López 2026

Agrupación de Ajedrez Ruy López organizes the VI Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Ruy López in Zafra from November 23–29, 2026.

The festival represents a major expansion of the event compared with the previous edition. Its program begins with a 10-player closed round-robin tournament designed to offer an International Master norm opportunity, running from November 23–27.

The program then continues with two FIDE-rated open tournaments from November 27–29. The first accepts players below 2400 FIDE, while the second is restricted to players below 1800 FIDE. Both use a seven-round Swiss system with a time control of 80 minutes plus 10 seconds per move.

In addition, the festival includes a night blitz tournament on November 28. The complete program advertises approximately €4,000 in prizes, while the two open sections can accommodate up to 240 participants.

The closed tournament takes place at Hotel Villa Ruy López Zafra, while the open competitions use the Salones María Marín. Players register directly with the association, and tournament payments go to an account held in the name of Agrupación Ajedrez Ruy López.

The festival also revives an important part of the club’s history. Earlier editions of the Ruy López Festival brought prominent international players to Extremadura. The 2010 fourth edition featured players including Fabiano Caruana, Pia Cramling, Ivan Cheparinov, Gabriel Sargissian, and Iván Salgado. After the fifth edition returned in 2025, the expanded 2026 festival continues that international tradition.
