1st Annual Princeton Holiday Classic 2026 – Premier & Class Sections

67 67 people viewed this event.

The 1st Annual Princeton Holiday Classic 2026 — Premier & Class Sections takes place from December 26–28, 2026, at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal in Plainsboro, New Jersey, United States. Organized by the Atlantic Chess Association, this inaugural holiday event brings together a FIDE-rated Premier, a FIDE-rated U2100 section, and five additional US Chess rating classes. The tournament is designed for players who want a serious five-round Swiss competition in the period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, with shorter two-day participation for the U1300 and U1000 groups.

The 2026 tournament has a notable guaranteed score-based prize system, rather than a traditional fixed total purse divided among placing positions. Under the published Premier rules, a player who scores 5/5 earns $1,600, while an outright first-place result with 4½ points is used by the organizer as an example of an $1,100 award. All seven sections offer guaranteed prize schedules, with the exact payment linked to the player’s final score. The five longer sections use 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment and the younger rating classes use a shorter clock.

The tournament’s playing hall and the advertised chess accommodation are under the same roof, which can be especially useful for families and international travelers. The organizer has arranged a special $139-per-night hotel rate at the Marriott for reservations made by November 28, subject to the room allocation. Visitors can reach the Princeton area through Newark Liberty International Airport, Amtrak, or NJ Transit, while the main hotel provides on-site dining, parking, and recreation facilities. This guide brings together the confirmed playing formats, exact round schedules, entry conditions, hotel options, and transport guidance.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The Premier, U2100, U1900, U1700 and U1500 sections follow a five-round Swiss system, with players receiving 90 minutes for the game plus 30 seconds added after each move. This is commonly written G/90;+30. The time control has no separate additional period at move 40, so participants should prepare for a fixed base allocation with an increment from the opening move. The Premier and U2100 results are both submitted for FIDE Standard rating.

The U1300 and U1000 sections are also five-round Swiss competitions, but they run over two days using G/60;d5. Every player receives 60 minutes for the game and a five-second delay before their clock begins deducting time for each move. A delay is not the same as an increment: unused seconds do not accumulate and cannot be banked. These younger or lower-rated sections finish on December 27 instead of December 28.

Playing Detail Confirmed Rule
⏱️ Premier / U2100 / U1900 / U1700 / U1500 5 rounds; 90 minutes plus 30-second increment per move
U1300 / U1000 5 rounds; 60 minutes with five-second delay
⭐ FIDE-rated sections Premier and U2100
US Chess ratings December 2026 published rating for pairings and eligibility
⌛ Forfeit time 60 minutes from the official start in all sections
Swiss system Separate pairings and standings in each rating section
Half-point byes Up to two irrevocable, subject to the published request deadlines

Rating-Based Section Assignment

The organizer uses published December 2026 US Chess ratings for initial eligibility and pairings and reserves the right to apply a different rating or conversion where appropriate. In addition, a player with a live rating above a section’s maximum must move to a higher section. The example in the regulations is especially clear: a player whose live rating reaches 1525 may not remain in U1500 and must instead play in U1700 or another eligible higher section.

Consequently, players entering near a section boundary should check both their published and live US Chess figures before registering. The name of a rating class refers to an upper limit, not a separate prize group within one combined event. Each section has its own five-round field, eligible entrants, playing schedule and guaranteed prize structure.

Half-Point Byes, Forfeits and Withdrawals

The Congress permits up to two irrevocable half-point byes. A request affecting the first round must be made by the onsite registration deadline on December 26. Half-point bye requests for subsequent rounds are accepted only until one hour before Round 2, meaning 3:00 PM on December 26 for the five upper sections and noon that day for U1300 and U1000. Once those deadlines pass, only zero-point byes remain available.

Players may request zero-point byes at any time, but competitors who withdraw from the tournament are ineligible for cash prizes. A forfeited round also carries sporting consequences, so entrants should plan carefully around the 60-minute forfeit time and the holiday travel period. Anyone who anticipates arriving late should contact the organizer and determine whether a planned bye is more appropriate than missing a pairing.

🏆 Prize Fund

The Princeton Holiday Classic uses an unusual guaranteed score-based prize system. Rather than announcing one capped cash fund divided among first, second and third places, the Atlantic Chess Association guarantees payments associated with specified final scores in each section. More than one competitor can receive the same full prize if they attain the same qualifying score. The resulting total payout therefore depends on how many players achieve each listed score; there is no single fixed tournament-wide sum published in the current regulations.

The organizer gives two specific Premier illustrations. A competitor winning every game for 5/5 receives $1,600, with no division of that amount even if another player also scores five. In another example, an outright Premier winner with 4½ points earns the $800 score award plus a $300 sole-first-place bonus, totaling $1,100. These examples explain the operation of the prize table but should not be used as invented maximums or applied unchanged to other rating sections.

Prize Example Published Payment or Rule
🥇 Premier — 5 points out of 5 $1,600 per qualifying player; no splitting for tied scores
Premier — clear winner with 4½ $800 plus $300 clear-first bonus = $1,100
Other sections Guaranteed score-based prize chart
U1500 unrated prize cap $400
U1300 unrated prize cap $200
U1000 unrated prize cap $100

Why Score-Based Awards Matter

The score-based approach changes how competitors should compare expected prize returns. A player does not necessarily need to wait for all games in the group to finish before receiving their payment, because the amount follows their own completed score. The organizer specifically highlights that two players with the same score may each collect the entire advertised prize for that score. This removes the usual need to divide a fixed placing prize among tied players.

There is also a clear-first bonus in a section when the outright winner finishes with a score other than five. However, the bonus does not mean every competitor with 4½ points receives an additional payment; the published Premier example explicitly describes a clear first-place winner. Players should inspect the full official section prize chart for the exact result-to-payment relationship and the applicable rating group rather than extrapolate from the Premier examples.

Titled-Player Conditions and Prize Deductions

The organizer offers specific conditions to grandmasters, international masters and their women’s-title counterparts. GMs and WGMs receive free entry; a registration after October 31 results in a $100 deduction from any prize. IMs and WIMs receive free entry only when registered by October 31; otherwise, their entry fee is $100. These conditions are available only to titled entrants who play all five rounds without a bye or tournament withdrawal.

There are also special prize ceilings for unrated players in U1500, U1300 and U1000, as shown above. Because prize rules affect both expected returns and eligibility, tournament visitors should distinguish the guaranteed score schedule from the separately published exceptions for unrated and titled participants. The official event regulations take precedence over generalized tournament prize descriptions.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The 1st Annual Princeton Holiday Classic comprises seven independently paired Swiss competitions. The Premier and U2100 are the two sections listed for both FIDE Standard and US Chess rating. U1900, U1700 and U1500 also use the three-day schedule and the longer classical control, but the current organizer page does not identify these three groups as FIDE-rated. Meanwhile, U1300 and U1000 run a separate two-day program with a shorter time control.

Section Rating, Duration and Eligibility
♟️ Premier FIDE Standard and US Chess; 5 rounds; December 26–28; G/90;+30
U2100 FIDE Standard and US Chess; rated under 2100; Dec 26–28; G/90;+30
U1900 US Chess; rated under 1900; Dec 26–28; G/90;+30
U1700 US Chess; rated under 1700; Dec 26–28; G/90;+30
U1500 US Chess; rated under 1500; Dec 26–28; G/90;+30
U1300 US Chess; rated under 1300; December 26–27; G/60;d5
U1000 US Chess; rated under 1000; December 26–27; G/60;d5

Choosing a Section with a Changing Rating

The rating labels use US Chess eligibility rather than automatically applying a participant’s FIDE number. For example, a player eligible for U1700 on the published list may have moved above its maximum in their live rating by tournament time. The organizer’s published rule would then require registration in a higher section. As a result, participants whose ratings change substantially after submitting a form should review their final section assignment.

For a first-time international player, the Premier or U2100 may be of particular interest because these are the sections with documented FIDE Standard status. However, every entrant must still satisfy the organizer’s membership and identification rules. The Premier is not a round-robin norms tournament; it is a five-round Swiss event with its own FIDE record, and the section name alone does not guarantee any title norm opportunity.

📅 Schedule

The longer five-section program begins on Saturday, December 26, 2026, with rounds at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The same starts apply on Sunday, December 27, before a final 10:00 AM round on Monday, December 28. The younger U1300 and U1000 groups have a different schedule: three games on December 26 and two on December 27. All hours are in local New Jersey time, Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC−5).

Saturday, Dec 26 — 4:00 PM Round 3
Sunday, Dec 27 — 10:00 AM Round 4
Sunday, Dec 27 — 4:00 PM Round 5

The distinction between the two timetables matters for parents planning accommodation and transport. The upper sections have a potential six-hour interval between starting times on double-round days, while the U1300 and U1000 Saturday schedule includes a much shorter period between morning and early-afternoon games. Nevertheless, actual game durations vary, so players should plan refreshments around their individual finish times rather than assume every round will end early.

The 9:00 AM onsite registration deadline occurs before play begins. The organizers may still accept a late entrant with a first-round half-point bye, subject to the formal procedure, but this is not the same as being paired in Round 1. Entrants who wish to play all five games should aim to arrive before registration closes, especially if traveling in from New York City or another part of New Jersey that morning.

📝 Registration

Registration takes place through the official Caissa Chess form linked from the Atlantic Chess Association event page. The organizer notes that Caissa Chess handles registration only; near the tournament date, players should use ChessRoster for game pairings, standings, and bye requests. The pre-registered player list allows competitors to check whether their name appears in the event’s published registration system.

The entry fee depends on both the player’s section and the date of payment. The five upper sections cost $135 through October 31, $150 through December 20, and $165 from December 21. The U1300 fee rises from $95 to $105 and then $115 on those same dates. For U1000, the corresponding prices are $75, $85 and $95. All fee deadlines use Eastern Standard Time.

US Chess and FIDE Identification

The organizers request a US Chess identification number for tournament administration. Players entering Premier or U2100 also need a valid FIDE ID for international rating submission. If they do not already have one, the organizer asks them to email identifying information as soon as possible, including full name, date of birth, federation, a unique contact email and the details required for a US federation FIDE ID application.

The instructions note that all players in the two FIDE-rated sections need a FIDE ID so that reports can be submitted accurately. This is not a requirement for the U1900, U1700, U1500, U1300 or U1000 sections based solely on their section names. International visitors should contact director@atlanticchessassociation.com early if their federation affiliation or US Chess membership creates any uncertainty about eligibility.

Refunds, Credits and Practical Preparation

The organizer’s published refund policy applies a 10% processing fee to withdrawals and permits a full credit toward another Atlantic Chess Association event. A participant who withdraws from the Princeton Holiday Classic is not eligible to collect tournament prizes. Because late-December hotel and transportation bookings may carry separate cancellation policies, entrants should account for those costs independently of the chess registration fee.

Chess boards and pieces will be supplied by the organizers. Players should bring a pen for notation and, if available, a chess clock that they know how to configure. Electronic notation devices are prohibited in every section, and the organizer applies a strict policy to phones and other electronics. A participant should read the instructions before entering the playing hall, rather than assume that electronic scorekeeping is permitted.

🏛️ Organizer

Atlantic Chess Association organizes the Princeton Holiday Classic and maintains a growing schedule of competitive chess events in several US regions. Its portfolio includes international FIDE-rated Opens, class tournaments, holiday competitions, youth chess and blitz events. The organization emphasizes clear playing conditions and structured registration, supporting both experienced tournament players and families introducing children to competitive play.

For the Princeton tournament, Shilpa Vaidya is identified in the Premier Chess-Results record as an organizer, while International Arbiter Grishmeshwar Prasad Sinha is listed as chief arbiter for the Premier section. The association’s MyChess.Events organizer profile already exists and covers its broader activity, so no duplicate organizer record is necessary. The event-specific contact email is director@atlanticchessassociation.com.

The Association also stages supplementary tournaments, such as its Princeton holiday blitz and scholastic events. Those events have different clocks and eligibility from the five-round classical competition, even when they share the same hotel weekend. Players should therefore book the main Princeton Holiday Classic if they want the standard-play sections described here, and should register separately for any faster or youth-only side event.

📍 Venue

The playing location is Princeton Marriott at Forrestal, 100 College Road East, Princeton, NJ 08540, United States. Although the organizer commonly labels the location as Plainsboro, the hotel’s official postal address uses Princeton. Both refer to the same Forrestal-area property in central New Jersey. This distinction can matter when entering the address into an international booking platform, so using the street address and hotel name is more dependable than relying on the city label alone.

Marriott describes the property as a resort-style hotel and conference complex on a wooded estate, with substantial meeting space. Its indoor dining choices, seating areas, fitness center, pool, and recreational amenities can make the hotel a practical base for three days of chess. As this is a hotel venue rather than a permanent chess clubhouse, visitors should look for event signage indicating the correct meeting room and tournament registration area.

The hotel’s official information lists complimentary onsite self-parking and paid valet service. Its reception operates around the clock, but standard room check-in is at 4:00 PM and checkout at 11:00 AM. These hotel timings should not be confused with the tournament’s 9:00 AM registration deadline. Participants arriving directly from the airport before their room is ready may need to discuss luggage storage with reception.

🏨 Accommodation

The Princeton Holiday Classic is especially convenient for visitors who stay in its host hotel. Atlantic Chess Association advertises a special $139-per-night rate at Princeton Marriott at Forrestal, with the booking deadline of November 28, 2026. This is a tournament-related accommodation arrangement, not a general current room quote. Availability may end before the deadline if the allocation fills, so guests should follow the organizer’s hotel booking instructions or contact the hotel to confirm the applicable group rate.

Hotel Address and Distinction
🏨 Princeton Marriott at Forrestal 100 College Road East, Princeton, NJ 08540; tournament venue and advertised $139 group rate through Nov 28
The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village 201 Village Boulevard, Princeton, NJ 08540; established hotel within Forrestal Village
Courtyard by Marriott Princeton 3815 US Route 1 at Mapleton Road, Princeton, NJ 08540; independent alternative with Bistro dining

Princeton Marriott at Forrestal — Tournament Hotel

The Princeton Marriott at Forrestal offers the most convenient accommodation because participants do not need to leave the building before the morning round. The hotel has guest rooms and suites, dining at Iron & Ivy and its café, an indoor pool, a fitness center, walking paths and onsite parking. The combination is particularly useful for families with more than one player in different rating classes or with younger children competing on the two-day schedule.

The special chess-room offer is $139 per night, with the organizer specifying November 28 as the last day to book under that rate. Guests should confirm that their reservation actually carries the tournament rate, what taxes apply, how breakfast is handled, and what cancellation deadlines govern the booking. The advertised rate should not be presented as a guaranteed public price after the organizer’s room-block deadline.

The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village

The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village is located at 201 Village Boulevard, Princeton, NJ 08540. The official hotel site describes a full-service property with accommodation, dining, fitness amenities and meeting facilities. This gives players another option within the broader Forrestal development, particularly if the Marriott’s special allocation is unavailable or a different room configuration is needed.

The Westin is not the site of the Princeton Holiday Classic, and the Atlantic Chess Association does not identify it as an official overflow hotel. Visitors staying here should confirm the actual drive or taxi connection to 100 College Road East, especially before the first 10:00 AM game. No tournament-specific discount has been verified for this property.

Courtyard by Marriott Princeton

The Courtyard by Marriott Princeton is situated at 3815 US Route 1 at Mapleton Road, Princeton, NJ 08540. Marriott also advises the GPS-friendly version 3815 Brunswick Pike for navigating to this location. The property offers standard guest rooms, an onsite Bistro, a fitness center and an indoor pool. Its Route 1 setting can be convenient for motorists who want to compare accommodation away from the host hotel.

Since the Courtyard is a separate property, players should not assume they can walk from its lobby to the chess hall. Allow time for the daily road journey and parking at Princeton Marriott at Forrestal. As with the Westin, the tournament organizers have not published a confirmed discounted chess rate for this hotel, so verify any offered price directly with the property.

Choosing the Right Stay for the Section

For Premier through U1500, the last game is scheduled for Monday, December 28, so accommodation commonly needs to cover two or three nights depending on travel. U1300 and U1000 finish on Sunday, December 27, potentially allowing a shorter visit. Players flying from abroad may prefer to arrive on December 25, if their transport schedule permits, because onsite registration closes at 9:00 AM on December 26.

Check the hotel’s cancellation conditions separately from the chess withdrawal policy. A chess entry may be credited to a future tournament, but this does not automatically extend to a nonrefundable room. Families should also confirm whether their reserved room type comfortably accommodates every traveler rather than assuming an advertised price covers extra occupants.

🚆 How to Get There

The Princeton Marriott at Forrestal is in central New Jersey, off US Route 1 on College Road East. Its position between New York City and Philadelphia makes it accessible by road and by rail, followed by a local connection. The most useful mainline rail station is Princeton Junction on the Northeast Corridor, rather than the smaller Princeton town station used by the campus shuttle train.

From Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is the nearest major international airport identified by the Marriott, approximately 37 miles from the property. Passengers can use the airport’s rail connection to join NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor service toward Princeton Junction, or take a taxi or an arranged road transfer directly to the hotel. The exact choice depends on arrival terminal, luggage, and the time of day.

The Marriott says it does not operate its own free airport shuttle, so guests should not expect one to meet arriving flights. Travelers who want public transit should use the NJ Transit route planner and allow time for transfers before continuing from Princeton Junction. A direct car transfer avoids the last rail-to-hotel connection but may cost more.

From New York City and Philadelphia by Train

From New York Penn Station, NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor trains serve Princeton Junction. This route also serves Newark Liberty’s rail connection and a series of New Jersey stations. Visitors coming from Philadelphia can travel to Trenton and change to NJ Transit toward Princeton Junction; certain Amtrak services also call at Princeton Junction. Check the Princeton University rail-travel guide for an explanation of these regional connections.

Princeton Junction is not within easy walking distance of the playing hotel. The NJ Transit website provides bus and rail options, while taxis and local ride-hailing services offer a direct final transfer to 100 College Road East. The tournament starts on December 26, so passengers should verify holiday service times instead of assuming a routine weekday timetable.

By Local Bus or Taxi from Princeton Junction

NJ Transit bus route 600 serves the College Road East corridor and can connect with the area around Princeton Junction. The stop identified as College Road East, 2000 feet south of US Route 1 serves the hotel neighborhood. A short walk remains from the stop to Princeton Marriott at Forrestal. However, service frequency and holiday schedules should be checked on the actual travel day.

A taxi or ride-hailing trip from Princeton Junction can simplify the final connection, particularly for international visitors with luggage or players arriving immediately before check-in. The university’s local bus travel guide describes regional NJ Transit options. The hotel’s official location page confirms the exact street address and its parking information.

By Car and Parking

Drivers using US Route 1 should take the College Road East exit and follow signs toward the Marriott property. The hotel’s own onsite spa directions advise using the second driveway on the right after entering College Road East from Route 1. Onsite self-parking is complimentary, while valet parking is separately priced. Parking availability is managed by the property, so players should allow time to locate the chess rooms after arriving.

Arrival Method Recommended Connection

🚆 New York City NJ Transit from New York Penn Station to Princeton Junction
Philadelphia / Trenton Train toward Trenton, then Northeast Corridor service to Princeton Junction
🚌 Local bus NJ Transit route 600 via the College Road East corridor

ℹ️ Other Information

The Princeton Holiday Classic takes place immediately after Christmas, so families should plan around late-December weather and regional transport schedules. New Jersey winters can be cold, with occasional icy conditions. The hotel format offers a practical advantage during inclement weather: players staying onsite can reach their chess rooms without an outside commute, and family members can use common areas between games.

Atlantic Chess Association also schedules a Princeton Holiday Classic Blitz and a separate scholastic event at the same hotel during the weekend. The blitz competition is FIDE-rated under a very different three-minute-plus-two-second clock, while the scholastic event uses a shorter rapid format for school-age players. They are independent events and should not be counted as additional rounds of the main five-round classical tournament.

For tournament accuracy, players should use the official main-event regulations for all entry conditions, the registration platform to enter, the pre-registered list to confirm registration, and the Premier Chess-Results record when seeking internationally rated event information. The organizer’s existing MyChess.Events profile provides background and links for other association tournaments. Questions may be sent to director@atlanticchessassociation.com.
