⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The tournament consists of five Swiss-system rounds.
Each player receives 80 minutes for the entire game plus a 10-second increment from move one.
Games are submitted for both FIDE and ECF Standard rating.
The published default time for AlphaChess 80+10 standard games is 20 minutes.
AlphaChess reserves the right to adjust section boundaries depending on the final number and ratings of participants. The Chief Arbiter may also use an accelerated Swiss format when appropriate.
Players may request up to two voluntary half-point byes in a five-round event. Only zero-point byes are normally available in the final round.
🏆 Prize Fund
AlphaChess advertises a £1,000 prize fund (approx. $1,330) for the Christmas Edition.
The prize fund is subject to the organizer’s published participation threshold.
In addition, random cash prizes are offered in sections that reach at least 10 players.
Under AlphaChess prize rules, a player may receive only one financial prize in the tournament.
Players must normally participate in at least half of the scheduled games to qualify for a prize.

AlphaChess describes its tournaments as flexible, people-centred events. Players may contact the organizer when they can participate in only part of the weekend.
Free FIDE-rated rapid games are also offered at AlphaChess Classical events between the main classical games when scheduling allows.

Electronic devices capable of transmitting a signal must remain switched off in the playing area. A player found using or carrying an active prohibited device during a game may lose that game under the AlphaChess tournament rules.

Recent editions have used five Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 80 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. Earlier 2026 tournaments offered three rating sections — Walnut, Rosewood, and Ebony — allowing developing players and stronger competitors to enter an appropriate group.
AlphaChess also promotes flexible participation. Players who cannot complete the entire weekend may arrange individual games or single-day participation. Moreover, the organizer has offered incentives for female players and welcomes unrated competitors into suitable lower sections.
The most recent classical weekend took place on August 29–30, 2026 at Wyllyotts Theatre. It combined a main classical competition with the AlphaChess U2000 Royale, which offered a substantial prize structure for players rated below 2000.

One of AlphaChess’s most distinctive projects is the AlphaChess FIDE Triathlon, which the organization describes as the first UK FIDE Triathlon combining all three official chess speeds in one weekend.
