The 2026 December Weekend Chess Classic – Irvine will take place on December 19–20, 2026, at the Hilton Irvine / Orange County Airport in Irvine, California. The two-day tournament offers four rating-based sections, with formats ranging from six long games in the Open, U1800, and U1400 sections to 12 games in a double-round format for U700 players.
The Open and U1800 sections are FIDE and US Chess rated, while U1400 and U700 are US Chess rated only. Open, U1800, and U1400 play at G/60 +30, giving each player 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment. The U700 section instead uses G/25 +5 and gives players two games against the same opponent during each scheduled round, with colors reversed.
The weekend also includes separate Saturday- and Sunday-night Blitz tournaments and a Best Game competition. No cash prize fund is published for the main classical event.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The three upper sections play one game during each scheduled round. U700 follows the same six scheduled round times but plays two games against the same opponent during each round.

In U700, players face the same opponent twice during each scheduled round. The colors are reversed for the second game.
Players in FIDE-rated sections must submit the white copy of their scoresheet after every game.
🏆 Prize Fund
The organizer does not publish a cash prize fund for the main tournament, and the current US Chess listing records the main event prize fund as $0.
A separate Best Game competition is available during the weekend. Each of the three selected games receives a 1-Month Diamond Membership.

The Open section provides the strongest field and is both FIDE and US Chess rated.

Advance registration costs $50 through December 11. The entry fee then increases to $60.

ℹ️ Other Information
Players must bring their own chess board, pieces, and digital chess clock. Scoresheets are supplied by the organizer.
Players may request up to three half-point byes. Bye requests must be submitted before the relevant pairings are posted.
Players who withdraw should notify the Tournament Director before the next round is paired.
Saturday & Sunday Night Blitz
Separate Blitz tournaments are held on both evenings. Participation in the classical main event is not required.

Both Blitz events use G/3+2 and consist of 5 double rounds for 10 games.
