♟️ About Marshall Chess Club

Marshall Chess Club is a historic chess club and tournament center based in Greenwich Village, New York City, United States. Founded in 1915 by U.S. Champion Frank J. Marshall, the club was created as a central meeting place where chess players could compete, learn, and socialize. It was formally incorporated in 1922 and has occupied its landmark brownstone at 23 West 10th Street since 1931. Today, Marshall Chess Club combines more than a century of chess history with one of the most active over-the-board tournament programs in the United States.

The club runs US Chess- and FIDE-rated classical, rapid, blitz, action, and scholastic tournaments throughout the year. Its calendar includes weekly classical leagues, Marshall FIDE Monday events, Premier FIDE tournaments, Monthly FIDE competitions, Masters events, rating-restricted sections, beginner tournaments, and frequent rapid and blitz competitions. In addition, the club provides adult classes, chess camps, lectures, casual play, and special workshops, allowing beginners and developing tournament players to share the same institution with Masters and Grandmasters.

IA/IO Carlos Chavez currently serves as Executive Director and is the most useful operational contact for tournament and club correspondence. The current Board of Governors is led by President Luka Glinsky, with Dr. Frank Brady serving as President Emeritus. The club begins September 2026 with an exceptionally dense tournament schedule, including the Marshall FIDE Monday series from September 7–October 12 and the Marshall Premier FIDE Open from September 11–13, 2026.

📜 More Than a Century of Chess History

Frank Marshall founded the organization in 1915 as Marshall’s Chess Divan at Keene’s Chop House in Manhattan. His intention was to create a New York equivalent of famous European chess gathering places where experienced players and young talents could meet regularly.

The club moved through several locations before incorporating in 1922. Its first dedicated clubhouse was at 135 West 12th Street. Then, in 1931, a group of supporters purchased the historic brownstone at 23 West 10th Street, which has remained the club’s permanent home ever since.

The building itself dates to 1832 and has hosted generations of leading chess players. Historic club members included figures such as Reuben Fine, Arthur Dake, Fred Reinfeld, Arnold Denker, Sidney Bernstein, and Anthony Santasiere.

Many World Champions and elite players have also visited or played at the Marshall, including José Raúl Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer, and, in more recent years, Magnus Carlsen, who gave simultaneous exhibitions at the club in 2013 and 2015.

♜ FIDE and US Chess Tournament Program

Competitive chess remains the core of Marshall Chess Club. Unlike clubs built mainly around one weekly meeting, the Marshall regularly stages multiple tournaments each week.

The current program includes Marshall FIDE Monday, a six-round classical competition played over successive Monday evenings. The September–October 2026 edition runs from September 7 through October 12 and uses a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

Parallel opportunities are available for developing players through the Marshall Monday U1800, Weekly U2200, Weekly U1600, Rated Beginner Open, and other rating-specific competitions.

Shorter formats are equally active. The club runs Friday FIDE Rapid, FIDE Blitz, Thursday Action, Morning Masters, Morning U1600, and other one-day competitions. Consequently, players can choose between classical games spread over several weeks, intensive weekend events, or rapid and blitz chess.

🏆 Marshall Premier FIDE Open

One of the stronger recurring competitions is the Marshall Premier FIDE Open, which regularly brings together Masters and ambitious tournament players.

The next edition is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 at the Marshall Chess Club. The Open section is restricted to players with a published US Chess or FIDE rating of at least 2000.

The tournament consists of five Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move and is submitted for FIDE rating. Grandmasters receive free entry, while a limited number of International Masters can also participate without an entry fee.

The September 2026 Open offers a $2,000 guaranteed prize fund, including $1,000 for first place. A separate Premier FIDE U2000 tournament runs simultaneously, giving lower-rated players access to the same weekend classical format.

🎓 Education, Camps and Community Chess

Marshall Chess Club also maintains an extensive educational program. Its activities include adult beginner classes, chess camps, instructional workshops, lectures, and casual play.

Adult beginner instruction is available both at the club and online. In-person classes combine structured teaching with casual games, helping newer players prepare for their first rated competitions.

During school breaks and summer periods, the club also runs Marshall Chess Camps for players of different ages and experience levels. Tournament procedures, calculation, strategy, and practical play form part of the learning environment.

Special educational programs supplement regular classes. In September 2026, for example, the club is hosting a four-week “Learning ChessBase for the Tournament Player” workshop led by ICCF Grandmaster and World Correspondence Chess Champion Jon Edwards.

This combination of education and constant tournament activity continues Frank Marshall’s original idea of creating a place where experienced competitors and developing players can learn from one another.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Carlos Chavez serves as Executive Director and holds the titles of International Arbiter and International Organizer. He manages the club together with a team of assistant managers, tournament directors, editors, and volunteers.

The current Board of Governors is headed by Luka Glinsky as President. Grant Rheingold and Ken Kubo serve as Vice Presidents, Ben Statz as Secretary, and Jeffrey Tannenbaum as Treasurer. Distinguished chess historian and author Dr. Frank Brady serves as President Emeritus.

The club is normally open six days per week, often until midnight, providing extensive opportunities for tournament play, study, social chess, and community events in the heart of Manhattan.
