⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The organizer runs five Swiss-system rounds.
Every player receives 90 minutes for the game plus a 30-second increment after every move from move one. Consequently, players must record their moves throughout the entire game.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| System | Swiss |
| Rounds | 5 |
| Time Control | 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move |
| Increment | From move one |
| Pairing Software | Swiss-Manager |
| Default Time | 30 minutes |
The organizer uses the higher of the latest ECF and FIDE classical ratings when determining a player’s tournament rating.
For rating-restricted sections, both the player’s ECF and FIDE classical ratings must remain below the section limit. Otherwise, the organizer may move the player to the appropriate section before Round 1.
When neither rating exists, the organizer may consider previous ratings, club playing strength, rapid ratings, or evidence from established online chess platforms.
🏆 Prize Fund
The published prize fund totals £1,575 / approx. $2,140, plus three trophies.
However, these amounts are indicative and based on at least 80 paid entries across all sections. The organizer may reduce or redistribute prizes if entries remain below 80. Conversely, the prize fund increases if paid entries exceed 100.

- Junior Trophy for the top-scoring junior from Thanet
The Junior Trophy applies when at least six juniors participate and the eligible junior has not already won the top section prize.
Prize Conditions
No player can receive more than one prize. If a player qualifies for several prizes, the organizer awards the higher-value prize and adjusts the remaining awards.
Only players with a current non-provisional ECF or FIDE classical rating qualify for rating prizes.
In the U1800 and U1550 sections, players without an ECF or FIDE rating can receive a maximum cash prize of £50 / approx. $70.
If players tie for a place, cash prizes are shared according to the organizer’s published system. Physical trophies and shields go to the player with the highest tie-break.
For joint first place, the first- and second-place money is pooled before distribution:
| Number of Joint Winners | Distribution |
|---|---|
| 2 players | 55% / 45% |
| 3 players | 40% / 35% / 25% |
| 4 players | 30% / 27% / 23% / 20% |
| 5 players | Equal shares |
The organizer sends cash prizes by bank transfer after receiving the winners’ banking details.
♟️ Sections / Groups
The congress has three rating sections.
| Section | Rating / Status |
|---|---|
| Open | Open section – FIDE and ECF rated |
| U1800 | Under 1800 – FIDE and ECF rated |
| U1550 | Under 1550 – ECF rated only |
The organizer may transfer players between sections when their ratings require it.
In general, sections remain separate for pairings. However, the Chief Arbiter may merge sections when fewer than 10 players enter a section.
If sections merge, the organizer adjusts the corresponding prizes under the published congress rules.

Players who require the additional fee pay:

| Adult | £16 / approx. $30 |
| Junior | £6.50 / approx. $10 |

Non-ENG players who already hold an active FIDE ID may either obtain the appropriate ECF membership while retaining their federation or pay the applicable tournament fee.
Players without a FIDE ID who enter a FIDE-rated section can be registered under ENG.
Payment
The organizer accepts payment by:
- Bank transfer
- PayPal
An entry becomes accepted only after the organizer receives the correct payment.
Refunds
Players may request a refund until seven days before the tournament starts.

ℹ️ Other Information
Half-Point Bye
Each player may request one half-point bye in advance.
The bye can apply to any round except Round 5.
Players can request it through the entry form or notify an arbiter or organizer before the relevant upcoming round.
Default Time
The default time is 30 minutes after the scheduled start of each round.
If an opponent has not arrived within 30 minutes, the player should report to the organizer’s desk. The organizer may then award a bye or arrange a re-pairing where practical.
A player who fails to appear without permission is automatically removed from subsequent pairings.
Reinstatement remains at the discretion of the organizer or Chief Arbiter and costs an additional £25 / approx. $40.
Pairings
The organizer uses Swiss-Manager for pairings and publishes tournament pairings and results through Chess-Results.
Players should check their name and tournament rating before Round 1 and notify the organizer promptly about any discrepancy.
Recording Moves
Because the tournament uses a 30-second increment from move one, players must record their moves throughout the entire game.
The organizer provides scoresheets. Players should bring their own pen or pencil and may also find a clipboard useful.
Digital clocks are used in all sections.
Electronic Devices & Fair Play
Mobile phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices must remain switched off throughout play unless the Chief Arbiter has approved a device for medical reasons.
Players must either leave devices at the control desk, place them face-down on the playing table, or keep them inside a bag under the table without moving the bag during play.
A player who has an active prohibited device or accesses one during a game can lose the game by default.
The same switched-off requirement applies to spectators inside the playing hall.
Appeals
A player who disputes an arbiter’s ruling should pause the clock and summon an arbiter.
Any appeal against that decision must reach the Chief Arbiter within 10 minutes of the incident. The Chief Arbiter’s decision is final.
Accessibility
Baypoint Club is a disability-friendly venue.
Players who require assistance should notify the organizer in advance so suitable arrangements can be made.
Photography
The organizer or official photographer may take photographs throughout the congress.
Other people may take photographs only during the first five minutes of each round. Mobile phones used for photographs must remain in flight mode.
Players who object to being photographed should inform the organizer in writing before the tournament.
Smoking, Vaping & Alcohol
Smoking and vaping, including electronic cigarettes, are not permitted inside the playing venue.
Alcohol consumption is also prohibited in the playing venue.
Junior Supervision
The organizers and arbiters do not act in place of parents or guardians.
Parents, guardians, or carers remain responsible for children throughout the event. Children under eight years old must remain under direct parental supervision for the entire congress.
