The congress advertises a £3,000 / approx. $3,980 prize fund, divided equally across the three sections. Each section offers four place prizes plus a £50 performance prize. The tournament begins on Friday evening and concludes at approximately 7:00 PM on Sunday.

Each section therefore advertises £1,000 / approx. $1,330 in prizes.

Prize Conditions

The £3,000 figure should not be described as an unconditional guaranteed prize fund.

4NCL states that its advertised prize fund is based on the expected number of entries. If entries fall significantly below expectations, the organizer may reduce the prize fund. Where possible, entrants will be notified beforehand.

Additional prize rules include:

  • No player may win more than one prize.
  • Place prize money is shared equally between tied players.
  • The performance prize is based on performance relative to rating (W-We).
  • Unrated players cannot win a performance prize.
  • Prizes are normally paid by bank transfer and/or entry-fee refund during the week following the congress.

🧩 Sections / Groups

The tournament has three FIDE- and ECF-rated sections.

Section Eligibility / Structure
FIDE Open Open section
FIDE U2000 Rating-limited section below 2000
FIDE U1700 Rating-limited section below 1700

Ratings Used for Section Allocation

The organizer will use players’ January 2027 ECF Standard Play ratings to determine:

  • section allocation;
  • tournament pairings;
  • performance prizes.

Players without an ECF Standard Play rating will receive an assigned rating from the organizer.

To establish an appropriate rating, 4NCL may consider information such as:

  • FIDE Standard rating;
  • ECF Rapidplay rating;
  • a rating from another national federation;
  • other available evidence of playing strength.

Any assigned rating is at the organizer’s discretion.

Players without a current ECF Standard Play rating should therefore check their section eligibility before entering.

The organizer also reserves the right to transfer players between sections when necessary.

📅 Schedule

The congress runs from Friday evening through Sunday evening.

Date / Time Program
Friday, January 15 – 7:00–11:00 PM Round 1
Saturday, January 16 – 10:00 AM–2:00 PM Round 2
Saturday, January 16 – 3:00–7:00 PM Round 3
Sunday, January 17 – 10:00 AM–2:00 PM Round 4
Sunday, January 17 – 3:00–7:00 PM Round 5

The Friday-evening start gives players time to travel to Huddersfield during the day. However, Round 1 can continue until approximately 11:00 PM, which makes staying at or near the venue particularly convenient.

Saturday includes two rounds, separated by approximately one hour. Sunday follows the same two-round structure and concludes at approximately 7:00 PM.

📝 Registration

The standard entry fee for every section is:

£35 / approx. $50

Online registration is available through the official 4NCL entry form:

https://pci.jotform.com/form/261462196125355

Payment is processed securely by card through Stripe.

Entry Fees

Registration Category Fee
Standard Entry – all sections £35 / approx. $50
FM / WFM £17.50 / approx. $30
GM / WGM Free
IM / WIM Free
Late Entry Surcharge +£10 / approx. $20

ECF Pay-to-Play Fees

Players who are not ECF members or who hold Bronze-level ECF membership must pay an additional ECF pay-to-play fee.

Player Additional Fee
Adult £16 / approx. $30
Junior £7 / approx. $10

For this purpose, players who are not under 18 on Friday, January 15, 2027 pay the adult fee.

Therefore, a standard adult entry requiring the £16 pay-to-play fee costs £51 / approx. $70 in total.

Late Entries

Entries may be accepted on the day, subject to availability.

A £10 / approx. $20 surcharge applies to late entries.

Because section capacity may become limited, advance registration is the safer option.

FIDE Identification Number

All entrants must have a FIDE Identification Number (FIN) when submitting their entry unless they want their FIDE federation registered as England.

English players without an existing FIDE ID can have one created with ENG affiliation when the rating files are submitted.

Players who do not want ENG affiliation must obtain registration with another national federation before playing.

Non-English players should provide their existing FIDE ID during entry.

The organizer also warns that changing FIDE nationality later can involve notification, transfer, or compensation fees.

Current FIDE Federation Restriction

The published 4NCL rules currently state that players registered with FIDE as RUS or BLR are not eligible to participate under current FIDE and ECF policy.

The organizer also refers affected players to FIDE’s applicable fast-track procedure for changing affiliation to FID where eligible.

Because federation rules may change before January 2027, affected players should confirm their status with 4NCL before making travel arrangements.

📍 Venue

Cedar Court Huddersfield – Lindley Moor Road, Ainley Top, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD3 3RH, United Kingdom.

The congress takes place at a four-star hotel and conference venue close to Junction 24 of the M62. Its location between Huddersfield and Halifax provides convenient road access from both Leeds and Manchester.

The hotel includes guest rooms, meeting and conference facilities, an on-site restaurant and bar, free Wi-Fi, and a fitness facility.

Breakfast is normally served from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturdays and Sundays, which works well with the 10:00 AM weekend round starts.

Parking

Cedar Court has a large on-site car park.

The hotel currently states that overnight parking costs £4 per 24 hours. Guests should register their vehicle at reception upon arrival.

Day-visitor parking arrangements can depend on length of stay and hotel spend, so tournament participants who are not staying overnight should confirm the applicable parking arrangement at reception.

Accessibility

The hotel offers accessible facilities and accessible guest accommodation.

Players who need a particular room layout or specific access to the tournament playing area should nevertheless confirm their requirements with the hotel or 4NCL before traveling.

🏨 Accommodation

The tournament venue is also the official congress hotel, and 4NCL has negotiated special bed-and-breakfast rates for participants.

Staying at Cedar Court is particularly convenient because Round 1 finishes as late as 11:00 PM on Friday and the weekend rounds begin at 10:00 AM.

Hotel Approx. Price / Night
Cedar Court Huddersfield – official congress hotel £89 single / approx. $120; £99 double/twin / approx. $140 B&B*

*See the rate clarification below.

Cedar Court Huddersfield – Official Congress Hotel

The current 4NCL tournament information page advertises the following negotiated B&B rates:

  • Single: £89 / approx. $120
  • Double / Twin: £99 / approx. $140

To book, contact the hotel directly:

Phone: +44 1422 375431 – Option 1
Email: reservations.huddersfield@cedarcourthotels.co.uk

Players should say that they are attending the 4NCL chess event or quote the group code:

RED150127

Card details are required to guarantee the booking, while the room is payable on arrival.

The 4NCL bedroom allocation will be released two weeks before the congress. After that date, rooms may no longer be available at the agreed group rate.

Important Hotel-Rate Clarification

There is currently a small discrepancy between two official 4NCL sources.

The tournament Information & Arrangements page lists:

£89 single / £99 double or twin

However, the live online entry form still displays:

£86 single / £96 double or twin

Because both are official 4NCL pages, players should confirm the current applicable congress rate directly with Cedar Court when booking and quote RED150127.

Fortune Hotel Huddersfield M62 Jct 24

New Hey Road, Ainley Top, Huddersfield HD2 2EA, United Kingdom

This hotel is another practical option in the Ainley Top area, close to the M62 and the tournament venue.

It provides free parking, free Wi-Fi, modern guest rooms, and breakfast options. Public rates currently start at approximately £75 / $100 per night, although January prices may differ.

Premier Inn Huddersfield North

Wakefield Road, Brighouse HD6 4HA, United Kingdom

Premier Inn Huddersfield North offers another budget-oriented option within driving distance of the congress venue.

Facilities include free parking, free Wi-Fi, breakfast, an on-site restaurant, family rooms, and accessible rooms.

Public prices vary considerably by date, so players should check the live January 15–17 rate before booking.

🚆 How to Get There

Cedar Court Huddersfield sits close to the M62, almost midway between Leeds and Manchester. As a result, driving is particularly convenient for players arriving from across northern England.

🚗 By Car

For navigation, use:

Cedar Court Huddersfield – Lindley Moor Road, Ainley Top, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD3 3RH, United Kingdom.

The venue is just off the M62 and offers extensive on-site parking.

Players arriving for Friday’s 7:00 PM first round should allow extra time for motorway traffic, hotel check-in, parking registration, and locating the playing hall.

🚆 By Train

The main rail station is:

Huddersfield Station – St George’s Square, Huddersfield HD1 1JB.

The hotel is outside Huddersfield town centre, so a taxi from the station is generally the simplest final connection.

Players traveling in January 2027 should be aware that major TransPennine Route Upgrade works are affecting Huddersfield Station.

National Rail currently advises that, until January 2027, the station operates with fewer platforms. It also states that Northern services from Leeds and Bradford Interchange do not run directly into Huddersfield during the works, with rail-replacement connections operating via Brighouse.

Because the congress takes place January 15–17, players traveling by train should check the final engineering timetable shortly before departure.

✈️ By Air

Two major airports are practical for international visitors.

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is approximately 20 miles from the hotel. A taxi journey is typically around 40–45 minutes depending on traffic.

Manchester Airport (MAN) is farther away but offers a much wider international route network. A road journey to Cedar Court is typically around one hour, depending on motorway conditions.

For overseas players carrying luggage and chess equipment, a taxi or rental car may be more convenient than making several public-transport connections.

ℹ️ Other Information

♟️ FIDE & ECF Rating

All three sections are both FIDE rated and ECF Standard Play rated.

Consequently, players can gain or lose rating in both systems, subject to the normal eligibility and rating regulations.

🧮 Performance Prize

Each section includes a £50 best-performance prize.

The organizer calculates this award using W-We, meaning performance relative to the player’s assigned rating rather than simply the highest tournament score outside the place prizes.

Unrated players cannot receive this award.

🏅 Titled Player Discounts

4NCL offers significant entry discounts to titled players:

  • GM / WGM: free entry
  • IM / WIM: free entry
  • FM / WFM: half-price entry

Eligible titled players should complete the appropriate entry process or contact the organizer if clarification is required.

🔄 Withdrawals & Refunds

Players who withdraw before the congress are entitled to an entry-fee refund minus a £5 administration charge.

Hotel cancellations are separate and remain subject to the venue’s own cancellation policy.

🛡️ Anti-Cheating Policy

The 4NCL Anti-Cheating Policy applies throughout the event.

Players should therefore comply with all arbiter instructions regarding electronic devices and fair-play procedures.

🍽️ Food & Drink at the Venue

Cedar Court has a particularly important venue rule.

Food and drink may not be consumed inside the hotel buildings or hotel car park unless:

  • it was purchased from the hotel; or
  • a resident guest consumes it inside their own bedroom.

The rule applies to both players and accompanying persons.

4NCL states that a player may be expelled from the event for breaching this requirement. Participants should therefore use the hotel’s food and beverage facilities or leave the property when consuming food purchased elsewhere.

⏰ 30-Minute Default

Players who arrive more than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of a round may be defaulted.

Re-pairing may also take place after 30 minutes. Therefore, players delayed by transport problems should contact the organizer as soon as possible.

🖥️ Digital Clocks

All congress games will be played using digital chess clocks.

💷 Prize Sharing

Tied place prizes are divided equally between the players concerned.

A competitor cannot win more than one prize.
