Club Ajedrez de Fresnedillas is an active chess organization in Fresnedillas de la Oliva, Madrid, Spain. The club promotes competitive and recreational chess for adults, juniors, families, and local residents. Moreover, it provides regular opportunities to play through tournaments, team events, and community activities.

The organization has managed chess events in Fresnedillas since at least 2015. Its early program included a local junior competition at the municipal library. Since then, the club has expanded its activities and developed several recurring tournament projects. Therefore, players can now participate in rapid events, standard-rated competitions, and regional team chess.

Roberto González Galeano serves as the club’s principal organizer and public contact. He directs tournaments, manages registrations, and coordinates communication with players. In addition, he represents Fresnedillas in rated competitions and team events. His continued involvement gives the club stable leadership across its different activities.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

The club organizes several forms of over-the-board chess in Fresnedillas de la Oliva. Its program includes friendly rapid tournaments, FIDE-rated standard events, junior competitions, and regional team contests. Consequently, both experienced competitors and newer players can find suitable playing opportunities.

One of its longest-running projects is the annual Fresnedillas de la Oliva chess tournament during the local summer festivities. By 2026, the event had reached its tenth edition. The tournament uses a six-round Swiss format and welcomes players in the Open, U14, and U10 categories. Moreover, participation remains free, which helps the event reach a broad local audience.

The club also organizes the Torneo de Verano en Fresnedillas, a standard-rated competition introduced in 2025. The first edition used a round-robin format with 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. In addition, FIDE registered Roberto González Galeano as the chief organizer. The second edition continues the series in 2026.

Qualified arbiters support the club’s larger competitions. International Arbiter Álvaro Domínguez Coig regularly supervises its rapid events. Meanwhile, Ramón Candeleda Mayoral serves as Chief Arbiter for the FIDE-rated summer tournament. Therefore, participants receive clear rules, official pairings, and properly managed results.

🤝 Team Chess and Regional Cooperation

Club Ajedrez de Fresnedillas also participates in Madrid team competitions. Its players have represented Fresnedillas in the regional league system and other team events. As a result, members can compete together while gaining experience against clubs from across the Community of Madrid.

The club supports the Sierra Oeste regional team tournament, which brings together chess organizations from neighbouring municipalities. Fresnedillas has hosted several editions at the Casa de la Cultura. Moreover, the event encourages cooperation between small local chess communities that may have limited playing opportunities during the year.

This regional approach strengthens relationships between players, organizers, arbiters, and municipal partners. In addition, it gives local competitors a wider range of opponents. The club can therefore combine community-based chess with formal team competition.

🎓 Junior Chess and Community Development

Junior chess has formed part of the club’s work from its early years. In 2015, the organization prepared a local tournament with separate U8, U10, U12, and U14 categories. The event introduced young residents to structured competition. Moreover, it gave families an accessible entry point into the local chess community.

Current tournaments continue to include dedicated junior categories and prizes. For example, the annual summer rapid event awards the leading U10 and U14 participants. Therefore, children can compete within the same event as adult players while still pursuing age-specific recognition.

The club has also supported chess education outside Fresnedillas. It provided advice and assistance for a school chess initiative in nearby Robledo de Chavela. This project introduced chess to several primary-school classes. Consequently, the club’s experience has benefited young learners across the wider area.

Municipal cooperation plays an important role in these activities. The Fresnedillas de la Oliva City Council promotes local chess events and provides access to community venues. Above all, the club connects tournament chess with education, family participation, and regional cooperation.
