Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia is a chess club based in La Zubia, in the province of Granada, Spain. The club participates actively in Andalusian and Spanish competitive chess while also running a municipal chess school, local tournaments, FIDE-rated competitions, team chess, and community programs. Its permanent base is at Calle Escuelas 2, La Zubia.

Chess activity in La Zubia predates the present club. Local records document tournaments during the 1970s, while a more structured chess group developed in the early 1980s. This work led to the creation of the Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez in the 1984/1985 season. After further development during the following years, the present Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia was formally established in 2003. The club entered official team competition for the first time in 2005.

Santiago Jurado Muñoz currently serves as President of Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia. His presidency is confirmed by current 2026 tournament reporting, including the closing ceremony of the Granada Chess Open. He has also been closely involved with the club’s tournament organization for many years.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess has become one of the club’s strongest competitive areas. After entering official competition in 2005, Villa de La Zubia steadily progressed through provincial, Andalusian, and national divisions.

A major milestone came in 2023, when the club’s aiMPULSA Granada team earned promotion to the Spanish First Division after finishing second at the Campeonato de España de Clubes Segunda División in Linares. The team won all but one of its matches during the championship.

The club subsequently maintained a deep team structure. Its program has included teams in national competition, División de Honor Andaluza, Primera División Andaluza, and several provincial divisions.

Therefore, the association provides several competitive pathways rather than concentrating its strongest players in only one team.

🎓 Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez

The Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez de La Zubia is one of the foundations of the club’s development program. Created in the 1984/1985 season, the school predates the current club and has introduced generations of children and adults to organized chess.

The current training program includes separate groups for beginners, young developing players, teenagers, and adults. Moreover, the club provides both introductory instruction and advanced competitive training.

Reinaldo Peinado leads the beginner group. He is a Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez regional instructor and also teaches chess in schools across the Granada metropolitan area.

Francisco Jiménez Melguizo leads the club’s three technical-development groups. He became Granada’s first FIDE International Arbiter in 2024 and also holds extensive Spanish and Andalusian arbiter and coaching qualifications.

In 2024, the club confirmed that its school remained part of the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez network of Official Chess Schools. The current club program continues to provide structured training from initiation through competition.

🧒 Junior Chess and Player Development

Villa de La Zubia has developed a substantial record in Andalusian junior chess. Its players regularly compete in provincial, regional, school, and Spanish championships.

A recent example is David Alonso Vargas, who achieved an Andalusian U16 double in 2025. He first won the classical Andalusian U16 championship and then became Andalusian U16 Rapid Champion, completing the rapid event without a loss. He subsequently represented Andalusia at the Spanish Autonomous Communities Championship.

The club has produced other strong junior results as well. Damián López Rebelles won the Andalusian U8 championship, while Ángel Serrano finished runner-up in the Andalusian Junior Championship.

These achievements reflect the connection between the Municipal Chess School and the club’s competitive structure. Young players can progress from introductory lessons into technical training, club tournaments, team chess, regional championships, and national competition.

🏆 Local and Regional Tournament Organization

Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia organizes a broad tournament program throughout the year. Its events include classical chess, rapid tournaments, blitz competitions, internal championships, school events, and larger open tournaments.

One of its longest-running events is the Torneo Nocturno Villa de La Zubia. The tournament reached its 20th edition in June 2026, when players competed in the Plaza de la Constitución over seven rapid rounds at 8 minutes plus a 3-second increment.

Another established project is the Torneo a Ritmo Lento Villa de La Zubia. The tournament began in 2011, initially with only 15 participants and a prize fund financed entirely from entry fees. It subsequently developed into an established classical competition with FIDE-rated editions.

The club also organizes its traditional Torneo de Otoño, club championships, school tournaments, and other events in cooperation with the Ayuntamiento de La Zubia and local institutions.

🌍 Granada Chess Open

The Granada Chess Open represents the club’s largest international tournament project.

Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia launched the event in 2025 and returned with a significantly larger second edition from July 28 to August 2, 2026 at Hotel Porcel Alixares, close to the Alhambra.

The Granada Chess Open 2026 attracted 353 players representing 48 federations. The field included 119 titled players, 11 Grandmasters, and 30 International Masters, making it one of the strongest open tournaments held in southern Spain.

Players competed over nine classical rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The event counted for national and international rating and offered opportunities to achieve international title norms.

Francisco Javier Melero Rus served as Tournament Director, while International Arbiter Francisco Jiménez Melguizo led the arbitration team. Meanwhile, Santiago Jurado represented Club de Ajedrez Villa de La Zubia as President during the closing ceremony.

The tournament extends the club’s organizational activity beyond La Zubia itself and into the city of Granada. Consequently, Villa de La Zubia now combines a strong grassroots program with the organization of a large international FIDE tournament.

🤝 Community Chess and Inclusion

The club also promotes chess as a community and educational activity. It works with the Ayuntamiento de La Zubia, schools, institutional partners, and other organizations throughout the Granada area.

Its activities include public tournaments, school chess, educational programs, and initiatives promoting greater participation by women and girls. For example, the club organized the Mujer, ajedrez y ciencia program, which combined a women’s chess tournament with talks related to science and gender representation.

The organization also emphasizes accessible chess for different ages and playing strengths. Therefore, casual players, juniors, adults, and experienced tournament competitors can all participate within the same club structure.

More than two decades after the formal creation of the club, Villa de La Zubia has developed from a local chess-school tradition into an organization active at community, Andalusian, Spanish, and international tournament level.
