A Historic Chess Club

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club was founded in 1882, making it one of England’s historic chess institutions.

The club was already well established before the legendary Hastings 1895 tournament, one of the most famous international competitions of the nineteenth century.

Over the decades, Hastings became closely associated with major names in chess history. The club’s own historical account records visits and activity involving players such as Joseph Henry Blackburne, Emanuel Lasker, Isidor Gunsberg, Henry Bird, Dawid Janowski and Richard Teichmann.

The club also has a particularly strong connection with Vera Menchik, the first Women’s World Chess Champion, who joined Hastings Chess Club as a teenager after moving to England.

Connection with the Hastings International Tradition

This U1900 weekend should not be confused with the much larger Hastings International Chess Congress.

However, it takes place inside the same local chess culture that made Hastings one of the best-known chess towns in Britain.
