FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2026
The FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2026 take place from November 2–15, 2026, in Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia. FIDE and the Serbian Chess Federation organize the championships at the Hotel Zepter Conference Hall.
The event awards four world championship titles: Open 50+, Women 50+, Open 65+, and Women 65+. Moreover, every category features 11 rounds of FIDE-rated classical chess under the Swiss system.
Players receive 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and another 30 minutes for the rest of the game. In addition, the clock adds 30 seconds after every move from move one. The championships offer a total prize fund of €50,000, approximately $57,430.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The organizer runs each category as an 11-round Swiss-system tournament. Therefore, players compete only against participants from their respective championship category.
Each player receives 90 minutes for the first 40 moves. Afterwards, the clock adds 30 minutes for the remainder of the game.
In addition, players receive a 30-second increment after every move from move one. Swiss-Manager handles the pairings and tournament administration.

A player who arrives more than 30 minutes after the scheduled starting time loses the game. However, the Chief Arbiter may decide otherwise in exceptional circumstances.
🏆 Prize Fund
The championships offer a total prize fund of €50,000, approximately $57,430. Moreover, the four category winners receive official world championship titles, trophies, and gold medals.
Second-place finishers receive silver medals, while third-place finishers receive bronze medals. In addition, the tournament offers non-cumulative prizes for players aged 75 or older.

The championships include four separate categories. Therefore, players should enter the category that matches their age and gender.

FIDE member federations may register as many eligible players as they wish. Moreover, the top three players from each category at the previous World Senior Championships hold personal participation rights.
The top three players from each category at the previous Continental Senior Individual Championships also hold personal rights. However, federations cannot transfer these places to other players.
FIDE’s Events Commission may adjust the final configuration of the women’s categories if the required participation conditions are not met. Any such decision must be made at least two weeks before the championships.

Most rounds begin at 15:00. Therefore, players have the morning available for preparation, recovery, or activities in Vrnjačka Banja.
Meanwhile, the final round begins one hour earlier at 14:00. The closing ceremony then takes place at 21:30.
📝 Registration
Players should coordinate their entries with their national chess federation. The championships accept players whom FIDE member federations register through the official registration form.
Registration for players and accompanying persons closes on Friday, September 25, 2026. Moreover, the organizer must receive the registration fee and hotel payment by the same deadline.

The registration fee includes an accreditation badge. In addition, it includes arrival and departure transfers from Kraljevo Morava Airport or Niš Constantine the Great Airport on the official dates.
The organizer may refuse late registrations. However, when space remains available, it may accept a late application after charging the published penalty.

After the organizer approves the completed form, the relevant national federation receives a pro forma invoice. The sender must cover all bank commissions.

Additional Accommodation Information
The organizer allocates rooms on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, participants should submit their hotel requests as early as possible.
All official accommodation packages include free access to the relevant hotel’s swimming pool, spa, and gym. However, guests under 16 may use these facilities only with an adult and during the permitted hours.
A local tourist tax of €1.70 per person per day, approximately $10, applies. In addition, players who stay outside the official hotels must arrange their own daily transport to and from the playing venue.

The organizer provides official airport transfers for accredited players and accompanying persons. Therefore, participants should submit complete travel information by October 23, 2026.

The organizer applies the following tie-break criteria in order:
- Direct Encounter points, when all tied players have played one another
- Buchholz Cut 1
- Buchholz
- Greater number of games played with Black
- Greater number of wins
Titles and Certificates
The winners receive the official titles of:
- 2026 World Senior Chess Champion 50+
- 2026 World Women’s Senior Chess Champion 50+
- 2026 World Senior Chess Champion 65+
- 2026 World Women’s Senior Chess Champion 65+
Moreover, FIDE may award direct titles according to its applicable title regulations.
Every participant receives a gift from the organizer and a certificate of participation.
Appeals
A player must submit a written protest within one hour after the relevant game ends. In addition, the protest must include a deposit of €200, approximately $230.
The Appeals Committee returns the deposit when it accepts the appeal. It may also return the deposit when it considers an unsuccessful appeal non-frivolous.
Side Events
The organizer schedules the open Vrnjačka Banja Trophy Rapid Tournament for November 8 at 11:00. The rapid tournament has no entry fee and offers a prize fund of €2,500, approximately $2,880.
Furthermore, the organizer plans at least two open FIDE-rated blitz tournaments during the championships.
Anti-Cheating Measures
The organizer will conduct detailed checks before players enter the playing hall. Moreover, it will use delayed game transmission and monitor the competition area.
The Chief Arbiter may also order random fair-play checks during the championships. Therefore, every participant must follow the arbiters’ instructions concerning electronic devices and access control.
Medical Service and Insurance
The organizer provides medical assistance during the championships. However, every player must obtain personal health and accident insurance for the full duration of the event.
Visa Information
Citizens who require a Serbian visa should request an official invitation letter no later than September 1, 2026.
