♟️ About Amager Skakforening

Amager Skakforening (AMS) is a chess club based on Amager in Copenhagen, Denmark. The club belongs to Københavns Skak Union (KSU) and Dansk Skak Union (DSU), while its junior section, Amager Skakskole, also participates in Dansk Skoleskak. The association provides tournament chess, team competition, junior training, adult instruction, and regular social chess activities.

The club celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, tracing its history to Sundbyernes Skakklub, which was founded on October 2, 1926. Another predecessor, Amager Skakforening, was established on August 24, 1932. The present organization took shape on June 6, 1973, when Sundbyernes Skakklub and Amager Skakforening merged under the Amager Skakforening name. Therefore, the 2026 centenary recognizes the foundation of the oldest club in this organizational lineage.

Sven Løntoft currently serves as Chairman of Amager Skakforening. He has led the club since 2017 and also heads its junior program. During his involvement, the association has expanded both its membership and its youth activities. Today, the club reports approximately 90 members, including around 40 juniors.

🏛️ A Century of Chess on Amager

The historical roots of Amager Skakforening reach back to a group of friends from Østrigsgade School who regularly played chess together. As interest grew, they established Sundbyernes Skakklub on October 2, 1926 with 20 members. The club initially met at Engels Pensionat on Amagerbrogade.

Sundbyernes Skakklub joined Københavns Skak Union in 1929 and quickly became part of organized Copenhagen chess. Meanwhile, a separate organization that later became Amager Skakforening developed from a club founded in 1932.

The two chess traditions eventually came together in 1973. Since then, Amager Skakforening has continued under the AMS abbreviation while retaining the 1926 foundation as the starting point of its history.

The association celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2016 with a major tournament. During that competition, Jakob Aabling-Thomsen crossed the 2400 live-rating threshold required for his International Master title. Ten years later, the club has planned an even broader program to mark its centenary.

🏆 Tournament Organization and Club Competition

Amager Skakforening runs several recurring rated tournaments during its normal club season. Its annual program includes an open club championship, a spring tournament, and the Amagermesterskabet after the summer break.

In addition, the association organizes a major weekend tournament each autumn. Previous editions have attracted strong Danish players and international titleholders. For example, the GoAudit Open 2022 attracted 48 competitors and featured Grandmaster Jesper Søndergaard Thybo among the leading players.

The later Atina Open continued this tournament tradition. The 2025 edition also incorporated the Copenhagen Championship and formed part of the build-up toward the club’s centenary year.

Regular tournament activity takes place at Prismen, the club’s principal home in Copenhagen. Moreover, the association supplements classical chess with blitz events, simultaneous exhibitions, lectures, and other club competitions throughout the year.

🌟 Amager Skakforening 100th Anniversary Open 2026

The Amager Skakforening 100th Anniversary Open forms part of the club’s principal centenary celebration in October 2026.

The wider anniversary program begins on October 12 with an official reception at Copenhagen City Hall. Amager Skakforening then stages GM and IM norm tournaments alongside the anniversary Open. Consequently, the club’s centenary brings together its members with strong Danish and international players.

The open competition itself runs from October 13–17, 2026 at Amager Selskabslokaler, Markmandsgade 9, Copenhagen. It uses a seven-round Swiss system and has a maximum field of 24 players. The standard minimum rating is 1900, although four places are reserved for Amager Skakforening players.

Games use a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. In addition, results count for both Danish and FIDE rating.

The organizers offer DKK 2,500 for first place, DKK 1,500 for second, and DKK 1,000 for third, together with additional rating prizes. Players register and pay their entry fees directly through Amager Skakforening.

The parallel GM and IM competitions use nine-round formats designed to provide opportunities for international title norms. Therefore, the anniversary program goes beyond a conventional club celebration and creates a substantial international chess event in Copenhagen.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess represents another major part of Amager Skakforening’s program. The club entered six teams in the Copenhagen team competition during the 2025/2026 season.

The season produced two promotions. Amager 1 won its division and earned promotion to Mesterrækken, while Amager 3 finished second in its group and moved up to the third division. The remaining teams provided competitive opportunities across several playing strengths.

This broad team structure allows both experienced competitors and developing club players to represent Amager. Moreover, the association emphasizes reliable team participation and maintains reserves who can step in when regular players are unavailable.

Individual competition remains important as well. Thomas Nielsen became the club champion in 2026 after a playoff against Richard Nielsen, while junior Laurits Justesen received the award as the leading junior in the championship.

🎓 Amager Skakskole and Junior Development

Amager Skakskole is the dedicated junior section of Amager Skakforening. It serves children and young people from approximately 7 to 18 years old and provides structured weekly instruction at Prismen.

Junior training takes place on Tuesdays, while an additional Thursday session serves more experienced players. New juniors can also attend trial sessions before committing to membership.

Sven Løntoft has led Amager Skakskole since 2012. His work in junior chess and club development has also received recognition from the Danish Chess Union. In addition, other club members contribute to instruction and tournament support.

The program has produced several promising young competitors. In 2026, Isabella Chen represented Denmark at the Nordic Girls Championship and was also selected for further international youth competition. Meanwhile, a substantial Amager delegation regularly participates in Danish junior tournaments and chess camps.

For its centenary year, the club also organized a special weekend for junior players and their parents. Activities included training with International Master Viktor Haarmark Nielsen, simultaneous chess, family chess activities, and participation in København Open.

🧠 Adult Training and Club Life

Amager Skakforening also provides structured opportunities for adult improvement. During 2026, the club offered a series of Thursday training sessions for members, including instruction from some of its strongest young players.

Regular club evenings take place at Prismen, Holmbladsgade 71. Junior training starts before the main adult session, while tournament games and other activities continue into the evening.

The association also maintains a strong social program. Seasonal activities include its traditional summer barbecue, prize ceremonies, blitz tournaments, lectures, simultaneous displays, and informal chess.

As a result, Amager Skakforening combines competitive chess with a large community program. Its centenary in 2026 reflects not only a long organizational history but also an active modern club with team chess, junior development, regular tournaments, and international competition.
