The 59th Annual Liberty Bell Open will take place from January 15–18, 2027, at Sonesta Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An established Continental Chess Association event and US Chess Heritage Event, the tournament returns over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with seven rounds, six rating-based sections, and a $25,000 guaranteed prize fund.

Players can choose among 4-Day, 3-Day, and 2-Day schedules. The regular tournament time control is 40/80, SD/30; d30, while compressed schedules use faster opening rounds before merging with the main field. The 2-Day option is available only in Under 2100 and lower sections. The Major and Under 2100 sections are FIDE rated.

The tournament awards 150 Enhanced US Chess Grand Prix points. In addition to the individual section prizes, players can compete for $2,000 in Mixed Doubles awards. The central Philadelphia venue provides convenient access to rail services, restaurants, hotels, and Philadelphia International Airport.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The 4-Day schedule uses the full classical time control for every round. Players on the 3-Day schedule play two accelerated games before joining the regular schedule, while the 2-Day schedule uses four faster opening rounds.

At 40/80, SD/30; d30, each player receives 80 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 additional minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second delay from move one.

January official US Chess ratings are used. Applicable Continental Chess minimum ratings, FIDE/foreign rating conversions, and other published rating rules may affect eligibility.

Players may not enter a section below their US Chess Online Regular rating minus 100 points.

The Liberty Bell Open guarantees $25,000 in prizes across six sections and the Mixed Doubles competition. The Major section carries the largest individual award, with $3,000 for first place.

Mixed Doubles

Players from any section may form a two-player male + female team. Team members may compete in different sections and use different schedules.

The team’s average rating must be under 2200. There is no additional entry fee. A team must be registered before both players begin Round 2.

Six rating-based sections allow players to compete at an appropriate level. Major has a published minimum rating, while all other sections have maximum rating limits.

Players seeking to enter Major may also qualify through Continental Chess’s published peak-rating rules.

📝 Registration

Entry fees depend on the registration date. The top five sections share the standard entry-fee schedule, while Under 1200 costs $20 less at each stage.

Late online or onsite entries are accepted until one hour before the player’s first round, subject to the organizer’s published conditions.

Grandmasters receive free entry, with $120 deducted from any prize won.

Re-entry costs $70. However, Major-to-Major re-entry is not permitted.

No mailed entries are accepted. Onsite credit-card payments are accepted, while checks are not accepted.

Refunds are subject to a $15 service charge.

US Chess membership is required. Continental Chess offers special one-year US Chess membership rates when membership is purchased online with tournament entry.

Foreign players and players with FIDE ratings should review Continental Chess’s published rating-conversion rules because converted ratings may affect section eligibility.

A separate 14th Annual Liberty Bell Open Blitz Championship will take place at the same venue on Sunday, January 17 at 10:30 PM. Blitz registration is onsite Sunday evening and closes at approximately 10:10 PM.
