The 9th Somerset New Year Chess Congress 2027 takes place on January 9–10, 2027, at the Walton Park Hotel in Clevedon, North Somerset, England. Organized by Chess 4U, the traditional weekend congress features five rounds of classical chess across three rating sections: U2050, U1750, and U1550.
The tournament uses a 75 minutes + 30 seconds per move time control, while all games are ECF Standard Play rated. Pairings will be produced using Swiss Manager, and the English Chess Federation describes the event as a five-round seeded Swiss congress.
The published prize schedule totals £1,200 / approximately $1,600, subject to an overall entry level of 70+ players. Each section offers first, second, third, and rating prizes, while a half-point bye is available in one of the first four rounds.

Prize Conditions
The organizer publishes several important prize rules:
- No player may win more than one prize.
- Unrated players are not eligible for rating prizes.
- Unrated players may receive only 50% of any other prize money won.
- The organizers may withhold prizes from unrated players entered in a section below their known playing strength.
- The organizers may redistribute all or part of a prize when a player has won or shared another prize.
- The overall published prize fund is subject to 70+ entries.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The congress has three rating-limited sections.
| Section | Eligibility | Published Section Prize Fund |
|---|---|---|
| U2050 | Players eligible below the U2050 limit | £400 / approx. $540 |
| U1750 | Players eligible below the U1750 limit | £400 / approx. $540 |
| U1550 | Players eligible below the U1550 limit | £400 / approx. $540 |
Ratings Used for Eligibility
The organizer will use the December 2026 ECF Standard Play rating lists for section entry and eligibility.
The January 2027 ECF rating lists will then be used for tournament pairings.
Other rating lists may be considered at the organizers’ discretion.
Players without a current rating must provide sufficient information about their playing strength. This may include previous results and their highest previous rating.
The organizers reserve the right to transfer a player to another section when necessary to ensure appropriate placement.
This rule is particularly important for unrated players or entrants whose current published rating may not accurately represent their playing strength.

Walton Park Hotel – Wellington Terrace, Clevedon, North Somerset BS21 7BL, United Kingdom.
The congress takes place at the Walton Park Hotel, a traditional seaside hotel positioned on the cliffs above the Bristol Channel.
The hotel has 48 individually designed bedrooms and provides accommodation, dining facilities, a bar, free Wi-Fi, and event space. Its cliff-top location offers views across the Bristol Channel toward the Welsh coastline.
The venue is entirely non-smoking.

🏨 Accommodation
The tournament organizer has arranged special chess congress accommodation rates directly with the Walton Park Hotel.
This is the most convenient option because players stay in the same building in which all five rounds are played.

The special congress accommodation cannot be booked through the hotel website or third-party booking websites.
A payment card is required to secure the booking. The organizer states that hotel bookings may be cancelled only up to 48 hours before arrival.
Early booking is strongly recommended.
The organizer also recommends that participants consider travel insurance covering cancellation.
Warrens Village – Alternative Accommodation
Colehouse Lane, Kenn, Clevedon, Bristol BS21 6TQ, United Kingdom
For players looking for an alternative to the tournament hotel, Warrens Village offers motel-style and self-catering accommodation a short drive from central Clevedon.
| Accommodation | Approx. Price / Night |
|---|---|
| Warrens Village | Approx. £55–£70 / $80–$100 |
The property offers free parking, free Wi-Fi, a restaurant and bar, while some accommodation units include kitchen facilities.
These prices are approximate public rates rather than official chess congress rates and may change according to availability and booking conditions.
For tournament participants, the Walton Park Hotel remains the strongest option because it eliminates travel between accommodation and the playing venue, particularly after the late Saturday Round 3.
🚆 How to Get There
Clevedon is a coastal town in North Somerset, southwest of Bristol.
The venue can be reached conveniently by car, while players arriving by train or air should expect a short final road connection to the hotel.
🚗 By Car
For navigation, use:
Walton Park Hotel – Wellington Terrace, Clevedon, North Somerset BS21 7BL, United Kingdom.
Clevedon is easily accessible from the M5 motorway, with the town reached through the local road network from the motorway.
The hotel’s location on Wellington Terrace places it close to Clevedon’s seafront and approximately a short drive from the main routes through the town.
Players arriving on Saturday morning should plan to reach the hotel well before 9:25 AM, when the opening ceremony begins.
✈️ From Bristol Airport
Bristol Airport (BRS) is the most convenient major airport for Clevedon.
The A2 Bristol Airport–Portishead bus service operates through the Clevedon area, including a stop at Clevedon Castlewood. From there, players should allow for an additional local taxi or other connection to the Walton Park Hotel.
A taxi or rental car directly from Bristol Airport may be simpler for players carrying luggage or arriving late in the evening.
Public-transport schedules can change, so participants should check the January 2027 timetable shortly before traveling.
🚆 By Train
Clevedon does not have its own railway station.
Yatton Station is the nearest practical mainline station and is approximately a 15-minute drive from Clevedon.
Yatton is served by trains connecting with locations including:
- Bristol Temple Meads
- Weston-super-Mare
- Taunton
Players traveling from London can normally travel from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads, then continue by local rail service toward Yatton.
From Yatton Station, a taxi or local bus connection can be used to reach Clevedon and the hotel.
Because Round 3 finishes at approximately 10:00 PM on Saturday, players relying on public transport should check evening connections carefully or consider staying at the tournament hotel.
ℹ️ Other Information
📊 ECF Rating
All games will be ECF Standard Play rated, and the resulting ratings will be published through the English Chess Federation.
The December 2026 list determines entry eligibility, while January 2027 ratings are used for pairings.
♟️ FIDE Laws of Chess
The tournament will be played under the FIDE Laws of Chess.
The arbiter’s decision is final.
Players should note that use of the FIDE Laws does not itself mean that the tournament is FIDE-rated; the organizer specifically advertises the event as ECF Standard Play rated.
📱 Mobile Phones
Mobile phones must be switched off in the playing area.
Players should ensure that their devices are fully turned off before entering the tournament room or beginning a game.
⏰ Late Arrival
The tournament has a 30-minute default time.
A player who has not arrived within 30 minutes of the scheduled starting time of a round may therefore lose the game by default.
📸 Photography
Unless a participant informs the organizers otherwise, photographs taken during the congress may be used for publicity purposes.
Anyone who does not wish to appear in publicity photographs should notify the organizers.
🚭 Smoking
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the Walton Park Hotel premises.
🏆 Prize Eligibility for Unrated Players
Unrated competitors should pay particular attention to the prize rules.
They:
- cannot win a rating prize;
- can receive only 50% of other prize money;
- must provide information about their playing strength;
- may be transferred to another section by the organizers;
- may have prizes withheld if they are considered to have entered below their known playing strength.
These rules help protect the fairness of the rating-limited sections.
🔄 Organizer Discretion
The organizers reserve the right to:
- transfer entrants between sections;
- withhold prizes in specified circumstances;
- redistribute prizes where necessary;
- take other reasonable measures required for the smooth running of the congress.
🔎 Pairings & Results
The organizer plans to publish tournament pairings and results through Chess-Results using Swiss Manager.
A verified 2027 Chess-Results tournament link has not yet been published, so players should use the official congress page for updates until the direct link becomes available:
