The 8th Donaldson Tournament 2026 takes place on December 5–6, 2026, at the historic Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club in downtown San Francisco, California. The two-day classical tournament features four Swiss-system rounds across three rating sections: 2000+, 1600–1999, and Under 1600.
All games use a classical G/90+30 time control. Each player receives 90 minutes for the game with a 30-second increment from move one. Furthermore, all sections are both US Chess and FIDE rated, making the tournament particularly attractive to players looking to compete for both national and international rating.
The tournament advertises a $2,600 prize fund based on 80 fully paid entries. Mechanics’ Institute also plans to broadcast the top six games online with a 15-minute delay.

The organizer also applies what it describes as a “200-rating point” play-up rule.
Players wishing to enter the 2000+ section must have at least an 1800 US Chess Regular Supplemental or actual regular rating.
Players wishing to enter the 1600–1999 section must have at least a 1400 US Chess Regular Supplemental or actual regular rating.
Play-Up Fees
| Player | Play-Up Fee |
|---|---|
| Mechanics’ Institute Member | $15 |
| Non-Member | $20 |
Players should select the appropriate section during registration and pay the additional play-up fee when applicable.
📅 Schedule
The tournament takes place over two days, with two rounds each day.
| Date / Time | Program |
|---|---|
| Saturday, December 5 – 9:30–9:45 AM | On-site registration |
| Saturday, December 5 – 10:00 AM | Round 1 |
| Saturday, December 5 – 2:30 PM | Round 2 |
| Sunday, December 6 – 10:00 AM | Round 3 |
| Sunday, December 6 – 2:30 PM | Round 4 |
Players should arrive before 9:45 AM on Saturday, particularly if they need to complete on-site registration.
Round 3 pairings are scheduled to be prepared on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. Consequently, players needing to withdraw or request an eligible bye should notify the Chess Club before pairings are produced.
The two-round-per-day structure leaves a substantial break between rounds and avoids the very late evening finishes common at some weekend congresses.

Alex Robins serves as Chess Director at Mechanics’ Institute. The tournament team also includes Head of Tournaments Judit Sztaray and several experienced tournament directors.
📍 Venue
Mechanics’ Institute, 4th Floor – 57 Post Street, San Francisco, CA 94104, United States.
The tournament is held in the historic Mechanics’ Institute building in the heart of downtown San Francisco.
The Chess Club occupies the fourth floor and has a long tradition of organizing major rated tournaments, lectures, classes, casual play, and community chess events.
The building is exceptionally convenient for players using public transportation. Mechanics’ Institute states that it is located only half a block from Montgomery Street BART and Muni stations.
The official US Chess listing identifies the tournament site as handicap accessible.
Players who require a specific accessibility arrangement may nevertheless wish to contact the Chess Club before the event.
🏨 Accommodation
Mechanics’ Institute does not advertise an official tournament hotel or negotiated room block for the Donaldson Tournament.
However, several hotels are available within easy walking distance of the venue in downtown San Francisco.
| Hotel | Approx. Price / Night |
|---|---|
| The Marker Union Square San Francisco – 501 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 | Approx. $110–$150 |
| Hotel 32One – 321 Grant Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94108 | Approx. $140–$180 |
| The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square – 335 Powell Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 | Approx. $180–$230 |
The Marker Union Square San Francisco
501 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
The Marker offers a comparatively affordable full-service option in the Union Square area and remains within a manageable walk or short local ride of Mechanics’ Institute.
It can be a practical choice for players who want to stay downtown without paying the highest Financial District hotel rates.
Hotel 32One
321 Grant Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94108
Hotel 32One is particularly well located for the tournament, between the Union Square and Financial District areas.
Its Grant Avenue location puts it within easy walking distance of 57 Post Street, reducing the need for transportation on tournament mornings.
The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square
335 Powell Street, San Francisco, CA 94102
The Westin St. Francis is a larger upscale hotel directly on Union Square and provides another convenient option within walking distance of the tournament.
It may be particularly suitable for families or visitors who prefer a larger full-service hotel in central San Francisco.
Prices are approximate public rates and are not official tournament rates. Actual December 5–6 prices may differ according to room type, taxes, cancellation terms, availability, and booking date. Players should check live rates before reserving.
🚆 How to Get There
The Mechanics’ Institute is particularly easy to reach by public transportation because it sits immediately next to San Francisco’s Market Street transit corridor.
🚆 By BART
The nearest station is:
Montgomery Street BART Station – 598 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94104
Mechanics’ Institute is approximately half a block from Montgomery Street Station.
Montgomery is served by several BART lines and provides connections throughout San Francisco and the wider Bay Area.
For many tournament participants, particularly visitors staying elsewhere in San Francisco or the East Bay, BART may be easier than driving into the downtown area.
🚋 By Muni
Montgomery Street Station also connects with San Francisco Muni services.
This gives players additional options for reaching the venue from neighborhoods throughout San Francisco.
✈️ From San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has a BART station inside the International Terminal.
BART connects SFO directly with downtown San Francisco, and the journey to the downtown area takes approximately 30 minutes.
Players can travel from SFO to Montgomery Street Station and then walk the short remaining distance to Mechanics’ Institute.
This makes the tournament unusually convenient for players arriving by air because a rental car is not necessary.
🚗 By Car
For navigation, use:
Mechanics’ Institute – 57 Post Street, San Francisco, CA 94104, United States.
Downtown San Francisco parking can be expensive and limited. The nearby Montgomery BART station itself does not have a parking facility.
Players who intend to drive should therefore identify a commercial downtown parking garage in advance and allow additional time for parking before Round 1.
For most visitors staying near a BART station, public transportation may be the simpler option.
ℹ️ Other Information
🌐 FIDE & US Chess Rating
All tournament games are US Chess Regular rated and FIDE rated.
Mechanics’ Institute states that modified FIDE rules apply.
This gives participants an opportunity to play four classical games that can affect both their US Chess and FIDE ratings.
⏰ Forfeit Time
The organizer publishes two different forfeit limits depending on whether advance notice has been provided.
| Situation | Forfeit Time |
|---|---|
| No prior notice | 30 minutes |
| Organizer notified in advance | 60 minutes |
A player expecting to arrive late should email or call the Chess Club as soon as possible.
When an opponent does not appear, the organizer will make every reasonable effort to find the waiting player an extra game.
♟️ Chess Equipment
Mechanics’ Institute provides chess clocks and sets them up for the players.
Therefore, participants do not need to bring their own clock unless they personally prefer to have one available.
📺 Live Games
The organizer plans to broadcast the top six games on Chess.com with a 15-minute delay.
The direct broadcast link has not yet been published.
Players and spectators should check the official tournament page closer to the event for the live-games link.
🧾 Pairings & Standings
Pairings are posted on the wall inside the Chess Club.
The organizer also plans to update pairings and standings online when time permits.
Processed entries are expected to be published at least one day before the tournament, while final standings will be posted after Round 4.
🤒 Sick Policy
Mechanics’ Institute asks players who feel unwell to withdraw rather than attend the tournament.
The club reserves the right to refuse entry to a player who appears visibly ill.
A player who withdraws because of illness before the tournament starts will receive a full refund as credit to their Jumbula account.
🏛️ The Donaldson Tournament Tradition
The Donaldson Tournament is one of the recurring classical events in the Mechanics’ Institute calendar.
Mechanics’ Institute has described the event as unusual within its tournament programme because it is the club’s only tournament held in honor of a living player.
The tournament honors International Master John Donaldson, whose long association with Mechanics’ Institute and extensive contributions to chess in the San Francisco Bay Area form an important part of the club’s modern chess history.
👥 Capacity
The tournament is limited to 80 players.
Because the event is FIDE rated, centrally located, and divided into three rating sections, players interested in participating should register early rather than rely on the short on-site registration period.
🔄 Organizer Updates
Mechanics’ Institute reserves the right to adjust event details as the tournament approaches. This may include sections, time control, round times, or prize arrangements when changes are required to provide a better tournament experience.
Players should therefore check the official tournament page shortly before traveling:
