Šahovski savez Crne Gore (ŠSCG), or Chess Federation of Montenegro, is the national governing body for chess in Montenegro. Founded on February 6, 1949, the federation is headquartered in Podgorica and administers Montenegro’s national championships, team leagues, player registration and ratings, national teams, arbiters, youth development, tournament organization, and international representation. It works with affiliated chess clubs throughout the country and represents Montenegro within FIDE and the European Chess Union.

ŠSCG runs an extensive national competition program covering classical, rapid, and blitz chess. Its calendar includes the Montenegrin Individual Championship, Women’s Championship, Premier League, First and Second Leagues, Women’s League, Pioneer League, Team Cup, youth championships, amateur and veteran championships, and national rapid and blitz events. In addition, the federation organizes major international tournaments and championships in Montenegro, including the Montenegro Open and events conducted under FIDE and ECU auspices.

FM Jovan Milović is the current President of Šahovski savez Crne Gore and has led the federation since 2019; he was re-elected for a second four-year mandate in 2022. Boro Miljanić serves as General Secretary and is the most appropriate primary administrative contact. The federation’s particularly active 2026 season has included the national championships and leagues, the Montenegro Open in Herceg Novi, and the European Junior Chess Championship 2026, which the federation hosted in Cetinje from August 5–16.

📜 History and Development

Šahovski savez Crne Gore was founded in Titograd, now Podgorica, on February 6, 1949. The founding assembly brought together representatives from different parts of Montenegro alongside prominent Yugoslav chess figures, including three-time Yugoslav champion Dr. Petar Trifunović.

Over subsequent decades, the federation developed Montenegro’s national championship structure and supported generations of prominent players. Its honorary president, GM Božidar Ivanović, is among the best-known figures in Montenegrin chess history.

Following Montenegro’s independence, the federation developed its own national-team and international competition structure. Today, ŠSCG manages Montenegro’s participation in Chess Olympiads, European championships, World and European youth events, and other international competitions.

🏆 National Championships and Leagues

The federation organized the 78th Montenegrin Individual Chess Championship in Podgorica from February 10–19, 2026. The 11-round competition offered a €15,000 prize fund.

GM Denis Kadrić won his first Montenegrin national title after scoring eight victories, two draws, and one defeat. GM Nikola Đukić took silver, while federation President FM Jovan Milović finished third.

Team chess is another central part of ŠSCG’s activity. From May 1–9, 2026, Petrovac hosted the Premier League, Women’s League, First League, Second League, and Pioneer League. The federation also organizes the Montenegrin Team Cup and separate national team championships in rapid and blitz chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess is one of ŠSCG’s principal development areas. The federation organizes national championships across several age categories, beginning with regional qualification tournaments and progressing to national finals.

The 2026 Montenegrin Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships took place in Kotor on February 21–22. The rapid competition attracted 141 young players, while 67 participated in the blitz championship.

The federation subsequently organized regional qualifiers for the 31st Montenegrin Youth Championship in Budva, Podgorica, and Nikšić, followed by the national finals in Petrovac from April 8–13.

ŠSCG also supports Montenegro’s strongest juniors at European and World youth championships and organizes arbiter seminars and other technical-development programs.

🌍 International Tournament Organization

Montenegro has developed into a regular host of major international chess events, with ŠSCG playing a central organizational role.

In 2025, the federation hosted the FIDE World Junior Chess Championships in Petrovac, bringing a large international field to Montenegro.

The federation continued this work in 2026 by staging the Montenegro Open in Herceg Novi from June 23 to July 1. It then hosted the European Junior Chess Championship 2026 in Cetinje from August 5–16 under the auspices of the European Chess Union.

Montenegro also hosted the IBCA World Team Chess Championship in Petrovac in April 2026. These projects complement the federation’s domestic calendar and strengthen Montenegro’s position as a regular destination for international chess tournaments.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

FM Jovan Milović serves as President of Šahovski savez Crne Gore. A former Yugoslav youth international, he is also a FIDE International Organizer and has directed numerous European and World chess events. He has served as Montenegro’s FIDE Delegate since 2014 and is President of FIDE Zone 1.5.

Boro Miljanić serves as General Secretary and manages the federation’s central administration. Predrag Nikač is Sports Director, Igor Vujačić is Rating Administrator, and Mitar Đukanović manages federation public relations.

The federation’s board also includes Vice President Veselin Drašković, Honorary President GM Božidar Ivanović, and representatives from the wider Montenegrin chess community.

European Chess Union is the continental chess body for Europe and one of the most important organizers in international chess. The association was founded in Graz, Austria, in 1985 and has its seat in Hünenberg See, Switzerland. It brings together 54 national chess federations and coordinates a large annual calendar of European chess championships.

The organization works across elite chess, youth chess, senior chess, club competition, rapid and blitz events, school chess, university chess, and federation-level development. Its role gives European players a clear pathway from national events into continental championships. In addition, the European Chess Union connects national federations, arbiters, trainers, organizers, and players through regulations, commissions, seminars, live broadcasts, and official tournament structures.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

European Chess Union organizes more than 20 major events and championships each year. Its most visible events include the European Individual Chess Championship, the European Women’s Chess Championship, the European Team Chess Championship, the European Youth Chess Championship, and the European Open and Women’s Chess Club Cups. These events bring together national teams, club teams, titled players, juniors, and ambitious competitors from across Europe.

The ECU calendar also includes the European Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship, European School Chess Championship, European Senior Championship, European Senior Team Championship, European Amateur Championship, European Rapid and Blitz Championship, European Universities Championship, European Cities Championship, and European Corporate Championship. Many events use Swiss-system formats, classical time controls, FIDE rating evaluation, and separate age or rating categories.

Youth chess has a particularly strong place in the organization’s work. The European Youth Chess Championship covers U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 age groups, with open and girls sections. Therefore, young players can compete in a structured continental pathway that connects national qualification systems with major international youth competition.

🌍 Player Experience and Community

Players who enter ECU events can expect a professional international chess tournament environment with published regulations, official invitations, national federation registration procedures, arbiters, live coverage, and clear championship formats. The events serve many player groups, from elite grandmasters to juniors, older players, club teams, amateur competitors, and university players.

The European Chess Union also gives chess fans broad access to European chess events through news, player information, photos, video coverage, and live broadcasts. Its media activity includes official updates, interviews, live commentary, and tournament reports. As a result, players and followers can track championship progress even when they cannot attend in person.

For national federations, the organization provides a shared European framework for championships, commissions, training initiatives, and technical standards. This helps maintain consistent competition rules and event expectations across many countries. Overall, European Chess Union plays a central role in FIDE-rated chess in Europe, continental titles, youth development, and international club and national-team competition.
