The 2027 FSCL Super Championship will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2027, at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. Organized by the Florida Scholastic Chess League (FSCL), this one-day championship brings together students from kindergarten through Grade 12 for five rounds of US Chess-rated competition. The event combines individual and school-team awards with an emphasis on sportsmanship, competitive development, and participation.
The championship follows a five-round Swiss system with a time control of G/25; d5, giving each player 25 minutes and a five-second delay per move. Five scholastic sections accommodate different grade levels: K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12. Players compete for trophies awarded to the top five individuals and top five teams, while every participant receives a medal. Advance registration costs $25, and same-day registration costs $30. All participants must hold an active US Chess membership.
The Super Championship is one of the major events in FSCL’s 2026–2027 scholastic tournament program. The league also organizes seasonal competitions and its South Regional Tournament, giving young players several opportunities to develop their skills during the school year. Moreover, the championship encourages schools, coaches, and families to participate in organized chess while helping students gain confidence through rated games. With a full five-round schedule, team recognition, and a convenient South Florida venue, the event offers an engaging competitive experience for young chess players.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The 2027 FSCL Super Championship uses a five-round Swiss pairing system, allowing students to compete in multiple rated games during the day.
The Swiss system pairs competitors according to their tournament results as the competition progresses. Unlike a knockout event, players can continue participating after a loss.
All five scholastic sections use the same time control.
| Playing Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Pairing System | Swiss |
| Number of Rounds | 5 |
| Time Control | G/25; d5 |
| Initial Time | 25 minutes per player |
| Clock Delay | 5 seconds per move |
| Rating Federation | US Chess |
| FIDE Rating | Not applicable |
Understanding G/25; d5
Each competitor receives 25 minutes for the entire game, together with a five-second delay on every move.
The delay allows the player to use up to five seconds before the clock begins reducing the remaining main time. However, unused delay time does not accumulate.
This distinction is important: G/25; d5 is not the same as G/25+5, which uses a Fischer increment.
Chess Equipment
FSCL strongly encourages players to bring their own chessboard, pieces, and chess clock.
Digital clocks supporting the five-second delay are preferred. In addition, players who record their games should bring appropriate writing materials.
The organizer’s tournament rules prohibit food and drinks at the playing table.
Tournament Tie-Breaks
When players finish with the same number of points, FSCL’s published rules specify the following tie-break order:
| Priority | Tie-Break Criterion |
|---|---|
| 1 | Modified Median |
| 2 | Solkoff |
| 3 | Cumulative |
| 4 | Cumulative of Opposition |
These procedures help determine final placements when competitors finish with equal scores.
Mandatory First-Round Bye for On-Site Registration
The organizer applies a special rule to participants who register on the day of the championship.
Every same-day registrant automatically receives a half-point bye for Round 1.
This means the player receives 0.5 points without playing the opening round and begins participating in games from Round 2.
The rule is mandatory. Therefore, families who want their children to play all five rounds should complete advance registration before the published deadline.
🏆 Prizes & Awards
The 2027 FSCL Super Championship recognizes individual achievement, school-team performance, and participation.
The organizer advertises trophies for the top five individual finishers and top five teams, together with medals for every participant.
No cash prize fund has been announced.
🥇 Individual Trophies
| Placement | Award |
|---|---|
| 1st Place | Trophy |
| 2nd Place | Trophy |
| 3rd Place | Trophy |
| 4th Place | Trophy |
| 5th Place | Trophy |
Individual trophies recognize leading performances within the championship’s scholastic competition.
Each student’s results also contribute to their US Chess rating record. Consequently, participants can pursue both competitive recognition and long-term rating improvement.
🏫 School Team Trophies
The championship also recognizes successful school teams.
| Team Placement | Award |
|---|---|
| 1st Place Team | Trophy |
| 2nd Place Team | Trophy |
| 3rd Place Team | Trophy |
| 4th Place Team | Trophy |
| 5th Place Team | Trophy |
Team awards encourage schools and chess programs to participate collectively.
Additionally, school-based competition creates opportunities for students to support their teammates and represent their educational institutions.
Coaches should confirm the final team-scoring procedures with FSCL, including any requirements concerning school affiliation and the number of contributing players.
🏅 Participation Medals
Every participant receives a medal, regardless of final placement.
This award reflects FSCL’s commitment to encouraging scholastic chess participation alongside competitive achievement.
For children attending an early rated tournament, receiving recognition can provide additional motivation to continue learning and competing.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The championship features five scholastic sections, organized according to students’ school grades.
| Section | Grade Eligibility |
|---|---|
| K–1 | Kindergarten through Grade 1 |
| K–3 | Kindergarten through Grade 3 |
| K–5 | Kindergarten through Grade 5 |
| K–8 | Kindergarten through Grade 8 |
| K–12 | Kindergarten through Grade 12 |
K–1 — Youngest Players
The K–1 section serves kindergarten and first-grade students.
It provides an opportunity for young competitors to gain tournament experience, understand basic competition procedures, and play rated games in a scholastic setting.
K–3 — Elementary Division
The K–3 section accommodates students through third grade.
Players can develop practical chess skills while learning to manage their clocks, follow tournament rules, and compete against other young students.
K–5 — Upper Elementary Division
The K–5 section allows students through fifth grade to participate.
This division offers a competitive environment for elementary school players with varying levels of tournament experience. In addition, it encourages students to continue progressing through organized scholastic chess.
K–8 — Middle School Division
The K–8 section includes students through eighth grade.
It provides a competitive option for developing middle school players and eligible younger competitors.
K–12 — Scholastic Championship Division
The K–12 section accommodates students through twelfth grade.
It provides a broad scholastic competition for older students and eligible younger competitors who enter this division.
Section Selection
All five divisions are grade-based rather than strictly rating-based.
However, the published categories have overlapping grade eligibility. Players and school coaches should therefore follow the organizer’s registration instructions when selecting a section.
Final section placement remains subject to the applicable FSCL tournament rules.
