Unrated players may win a maximum of $100 in the U1600 and U800 sections. However, unrated competitors in the Open section are not subject to this prize limit.
The organizer also applies a strict rule concerning early agreed draws: players who agree to a draw before completing 30 moves become ineligible for cash prizes and the state championship title.
🧩 Sections / Groups
The tournament features three rating-based sections, allowing players to choose a suitable level of competition.
| Section | Rating Eligibility | Rounds |
|---|---|---|
| Open | All rating levels | 5 |
| U1600 | Under 1600 US Chess | 5 |
| U800 | Under 800 US Chess | 5 |
Open Section
The Open section welcomes players regardless of rating or tournament experience. It offers the largest cash prize and determines the official Texas Action Chess Champion.
Experienced competitors, titled players, and ambitious developing players may all enter this division.
Under 1600 Section
The U1600 section is designed for players with US Chess ratings below 1600. It provides a competitive field for intermediate and developing competitors.
Players who qualify for this section may choose to compete in the Open section instead.
Under 800 Section
The U800 section is intended for beginners and competitors rated below 800. It allows newer players to experience a state championship environment while competing for meaningful cash awards.
Unrated participants may select any section, subject to the tournament director’s approval.
Playing in a Higher Section
Players may elect to play up into a stronger section.
An eligible player choosing to enter the Open section during initial registration may do so under the published registration terms.
However, a player who initially registers for an under section and later voluntarily transfers to the Open section must pay a $10 section adjustment fee.
This fee is waived if the player becomes ineligible for the original section because their rating increases after registration.
The tournament director may also merge sections when necessary.
