♟️ About English Chess Federation (ECF)

The English Chess Federation (ECF) is the national governing organization for chess in England and the country’s official affiliate to FIDE, the International Chess Federation. It supports competitive, junior, women’s, senior, school, club, online, and international chess while maintaining the national rating system and providing services for players, organizers, arbiters, coaches, clubs, leagues, and counties. The ECF’s work covers both grassroots participation and elite competition. It selects England teams and individual representatives for major international events, including Chess Olympiads, European and World Team Championships, and junior championships. In addition, it supports young players through development programs and partnerships, administers ECF ratings, assists organizers with FIDE-rated events, and provides training and resources for arbiters and tournament organizers. The federation is currently led by President Dominic Lawson, Chief Executive Richard Walsh, and Non-Executive Chairman Stephen Woodhouse. Its wider board includes directors responsible for finance, international chess, junior development, women’s chess, events, and home chess development.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

The English Chess Federation manages and supports a broad national competition program. Major events include the British Chess Championships, English Championships, English Women’s Championships, English Seniors Championships, Counties Championship, UK Open Blitz Championships, ECF Schools competitions, and ECF Online Grand Prix. It also maintains an extensive national tournament calendar and provides infrastructure for ECF and FIDE rating. The British Chess Championships remain a centerpiece of the federation’s tournament program. The 2026 championships were held at the University of Warwick in Coventry and generated more than 2,600 entries across the full festival program, which included competitions for different ages and playing strengths. GM Shreyas Royal became British Champion, while FM Bodhana Sivanandan won the British Women’s Championship. In 2026, the federation also introduced the ECF International Series, designed to encourage players aspiring to represent England to compete in leading domestic tournaments. The series covers Open, Women, Junior, and Girls categories and offers a total prize fund of £14,500 across qualifying national championships, title-norm tournaments, and major open events.

🌱 Player Development & English Chess

Junior development is a major part of the ECF’s work. The federation supports promising young players, works with organizations including the Chess Trust and John Robinson Youth Chess Trust, and provides pathways from grassroots chess through to international representation. It also operates dedicated junior resources and supports school and youth competitions across England. The ECF also maintains specific programs to increase participation by women and girls. Its Women’s Chess initiative is led by Director of Women’s Chess Aga Milewska and includes competitions, online activities, development opportunities, and support for projects such as She Plays To Win. Beyond tournaments, the federation operates the ECF Rating System, publishes ratings monthly, maintains resources for clubs and organizers, administers national chess titles through its Master Points System, supports arbiter development, and provides routes for English events to obtain FIDE rating.

📚 History & Development

The modern English Chess Federation was established in 2005, succeeding the British Chess Federation (BCF) in its role of administering chess in England. The BCF itself had been founded in 1904, giving the organization’s institutional history more than a century of continuity in British and English chess. The first Annual General Meeting of the newly established English Chess Federation took place on October 22, 2005. The restructuring created a company limited by guarantee and introduced the ECF name while transferring the principal operational responsibilities previously carried out by the BCF. Today, the federation combines that long-established national role with modern rating services, digital competition, online communities, international representation, tournament development, and programs intended to broaden participation throughout English chess.
