Roquetas Chess Festival 2027 – XXXVIII International Open
The Roquetas Chess Festival 2027 – XXXVIII International Open runs from January 2–7, 2027, at Hotel Bahía Serena in Roquetas de Mar, Almería, Spain. Club de Ajedrez Roquetas organizes the event at the resort’s established Mediterranean beachfront venue. Its main Open features nine Swiss-system rounds of classical chess and carries FIDE Standard rating recognition, along with potential international title-norm opportunities under the relevant FIDE requirements.
Every player receives 90 minutes for the game and a 30-second increment from move one. The organizer initially limits the main International Open to 200 players, although the regulations permit additional places when circumstances allow. Moreover, its published 2027 prize chart contains €10,000 in overall placement prizes and €480 in special-category awards. Therefore, the nominal combined listed amount is €10,480 (approximately US$11,660), with €3,000 going to first place.
The wider festival also features a separate Under-2150 classical competition and a FIDE-rated blitz tournament. However, these have different eligibility rules, clocks, schedules and prizes, so players should choose their competition carefully. The official hotel package brings accommodation and the playing hall into one property. Consequently, international visitors and their families can simplify their travel arrangements while enjoying a winter chess event near the coast.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The XXXVIII International Open follows the FIDE Dutch Swiss pairing system, with computerized pairing support through VegaChess. The organizer will calculate FIDE Standard and Andalusian federation ratings. Additionally, its classical clock gives each player 90 minutes for the whole game and adds 30 seconds after every move, beginning with move one. Double-round days make efficient time management especially important.
| Playing Rule | 2027 Regulations |
|---|---|
| Pairing method | Dutch Swiss, 9 rounds |
| Time control | 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move |
| Rating status | FIDE Standard and FADA |
| Maximum delay | 45 minutes for Round 1; 30 minutes for subsequent rounds |
| Draw agreements | Normally only after both players have completed 30 moves |
| Half-point byes | Maximum three; available through Round 6 with explicit approval |
| Initial Open capacity | 200 players, potentially expandable |
Half-Point Byes
The rules permit up to three half-point byes during the first six rounds. Players must request them in writing by the specified procedure. For example, a player may write to the organizer before Round 1 or submit a later request at the arbiters’ desk. However, an application does not become effective automatically: the tournament officials must expressly confirm each bye and any cancellation.
Late Arrival and Draw Rules
For the opening round, the organizer permits a maximum delay of 45 minutes after the scheduled starting time. In contrast, later rounds allow only 30 minutes. Therefore, entrants should arrive early and locate their boards before play begins. Players also need to observe the rule requiring at least 30 moves by each side before a draw agreement, unless an arbiter permits an exception under the official conditions.
Tie-Break Procedures
When players finish level on points, the competition follows a defined sequence of tie-breaks. These include Average of Opponents’ Buchholz, Buchholz Cut-1, Games One Elected to Play, Direct Encounter, Average Rating of Opponents Cut-1, and Number of Wins. In addition, the organizers adjust unplayed games under the regulations and exclude half-point byes from Buchholz calculations. The official PDF provides the precise ranking order.
🏆 Prize Fund
The published prize list allocates €10,000 to the first 16 finishers in the main International Open. Furthermore, four special first prizes add €480 in nominal awards for players in different categories. The sum of all listed main Open awards is therefore €10,480 (≈ US$11,660), calculated directly from the prize chart. This amount does not include prizes in the separate Under-2150 or Blitz competitions.
Dollar estimates use the European Central Bank’s reference exchange rate from October 29, 2026: €1 = US$1.1130. However, the organizer publishes and pays cash prizes in euros, and applicable tax withholding may reduce the amount received. Cash prizes are also non-cumulative: players qualifying for more than one award receive the applicable higher prize according to the official rules.

|---|---|
| 1st | €3,000 ≈ US$3,340 |

| Best woman | €150 ≈ US$170 |

The veteran category covers players born in 1977 or earlier, with exclusions for certain international titles. Moreover, the regulations define category-rating eligibility using the applicable published ratings. Winners must collect prizes at the ceremony, either personally or through an accepted representative. Consequently, players who may finish among the prize winners should allow time after the final round.
♟️ Sections / Groups
Three competitions share the Roquetas festival venue, but this page covers the XXXVIII International Open. The classical main Open runs January 2–7, while the Under-2150 event runs January 3–6. Additionally, a one-evening blitz tournament takes place on January 4. These events have different ratings, participation requirements and prize schedules, and the organizers prohibit playing in both classical tournaments simultaneously.
| Competition | Format and Eligibility |
|---|---|
| 🏆 XXXVIII International Open | January 2–7; 9-round Swiss; 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move; FIDE Standard; initial 200 players |
| ♟️ XIV Under-2150 Open | January 3–6; 7-round Swiss; 85 minutes + 5 seconds per move; FIDE Standard; maximum 128 |
| ⚡ VIII Blitz | January 4, 10:30 PM; 9 rounds; 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move; FIDE Blitz |
International Open
The main Open welcomes eligible national and international players and provides the festival’s principal classical competition. Moreover, the 2027 rules permit FIDE title-norm performances when the final field meets the necessary conditions. A participant pursuing a norm must satisfy all individual FIDE requirements; entering the Open alone does not guarantee norm eligibility.
Under-2150 Classical Open
The separate Under-2150 section is restricted to players with a FIDE Standard rating no higher than 2149 on January 1, 2027, who have not exceeded 2200 during 2026. Furthermore, it uses a different 85+5 clock and runs seven rounds. Players considering this competition should check their rating history rather than relying solely on their latest rating.
Blitz Side Event
The nine-round FIDE Blitz tournament begins at 10:30 PM on January 4. It uses a 3+2 clock, and the entry fee is €10 at the playing hall. Meanwhile, participants in the main Open can decide independently whether the evening competition fits their classical schedule and rest requirements.
📅 Schedule
The official regulations set out every round of the XXXVIII International Open. The first game begins on Saturday, January 2, at 5:00 PM, and the last starts on Thursday, January 7, at 9:30 AM. All times follow local Central European Time (CET, UTC+1). As a result, international travelers can plan their arrival and departure around a defined nine-round timetable.
| Date & Time (CET) | Activity |
|---|---|
| Jan 2 · 5:00 PM | Round 1 |
| Jan 3 · 10:00 AM | Round 2 |
| Jan 3 · 4:30 PM | Round 3 |
| Jan 4 · 10:00 AM | Round 4 |
| Jan 4 · 4:30 PM | Round 5 |
| Jan 5 · 4:30 PM | Round 6 |
| Jan 6 · 10:00 AM | Round 7 |
| Jan 6 · 4:30 PM | Round 8 |
| Jan 7 · 9:30 AM | Round 9 |
| Jan 7 · Around 2:00 PM | Prize ceremony |
The January 3, 4, and 6 sessions each include two classical games. Therefore, those dates require extra attention to meals, rest and preparation. Meanwhile, January 5 has only an afternoon game. The organizer expects to hold the International Open’s prize ceremony at around 2:00 PM on January 7, after the final morning round.
📝 Registration
The organizers accept main Open registration requests through roquetaschessfestival@gmail.com. Players should supply their full name, year of birth, federation and relevant FIDE details. Moreover, the official deadline for entry is December 28, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Places in the initial 200-player field follow the organizer’s registration and payment arrangements.
| Main International Open Entry | Published Fee |
|---|---|
| Standard entry | €70 ≈ US$80 |
| Reduced entry | €60 ≈ US$70 |
| With official hotel accommodation | €50 ≈ US$60 (minimum three nights through the organizer) |
| Registration deadline | December 28, 2026, 11:59 PM |
| Registration email | roquetaschessfestival@gmail.com |
| Phone / WhatsApp | +34 661 751 378 |
The reduced €60 rate covers eligible Almería players, players with disabilities and qualifying direct family members taking part together. In addition, the €50 rate requires an accommodation booking made through the organizer, not an independent hotel reservation. Players should clarify their eligibility before completing payment.
Registration and Payment
The regulations require advance bank transfer for tournament entry, with identifying information accompanying the payment. Furthermore, players applying for a hotel arrangement must coordinate advance payment with the chess club. For accurate payment details and confirmation, participants should communicate directly with the official organizers rather than copying bank-account information from a third-party event listing.
FIDE and Federation Eligibility
Competitors registered under the Spanish FIDE flag need an active federation license for 2027. By contrast, those representing another FIDE federation must have a FIDE registration code. The organization retains discretion to reject applications under the published rules. Consequently, overseas entrants should resolve any licensing question before transferring entry or hotel fees.

📍 Venue
Hotel Bahía Serena, Avenida Playa Serena 67, Urbanización Playa Serena, 04740 Roquetas de Mar, Almería, Spain. The four-star hotel stands on the beachfront in the Playa Serena district of Roquetas de Mar. The official regulations confirm it as the common playing venue for the classical Open, the Under-2150 competition and the Blitz tournament. Moreover, the hotel’s official location page confirms the full street address.
The hotel features apartment-style accommodation, dining facilities and shared guest areas. Consequently, competitors staying at the venue can attend their rounds without arranging separate transportation every day. Players should consult the organizer on arrival for the designated chess room, check-in procedures and playing-hall access.
🏨 Accommodation
The official 2027 regulations advertise a full-board hotel offer at Hotel Bahía Serena, with rates per room per night. The room options follow an apartment-style layout, generally with a separate bedroom and living area. Furthermore, guests booking at least three nights through the festival’s organizer may qualify for the reduced €50 main Open entry fee.
| 2027 Hotel Accommodation | Full-Board Price / Room / Night |
|---|---|
| Single | €95 |
| Double | €130 |
| Triple | €174 |
| Two-bedroom quadruple | €210 |
| Special triple including child under 12 | €150 |
| Quadruple with children under 12 | €175 |
| Optional beachfront apartment upgrade | €10 extra per person per night |
The package covers buffet meals under the documented offer. In addition, the hotel publishes a supplement for a beachfront one-bedroom apartment. Families should compare bedroom configurations carefully, especially when choosing rooms with sofa beds or child-specific arrangements. However, the organizer requires advance hotel payment, and independently made bookings do not automatically qualify for the tournament entry discount.
🚆 How to Get There
By Air
Almería Airport (LEI) serves the province and offers a possible arrival point for international visitors. Travelers can continue toward Roquetas de Mar by road or suitable public transport. However, routes and available services depend on the actual flight itinerary, so competitors should check their onward transfer before departure.
By Road
Roquetas de Mar connects to the wider road system through the Almería area and the A-7 Mediterranean corridor. Drivers should use Avenida Playa Serena 67 as the final destination. Additionally, guests should ask the hotel directly about parking availability and charges, since the chess regulations do not guarantee a particular parking rate.
Local Transport
Visitors using rail or intercity bus services may need to continue from Almería toward the Playa Serena district. Therefore, travelers should consider their final local transfer when booking transport. For a stay lasting all six tournament days, the on-site hotel arrangement may simplify both the morning rounds and the longer two-game days.
ℹ️ Other Information
Title Norms and Fair Play
The organizers advertise the main International Open as valid for FIDE title-norm performances, subject to the applicable FIDE regulations. Nevertheless, no player receives a norm simply by entering; the participant must achieve the necessary results against a qualifying opponent field. In addition, the rules restrict electronic communication devices and smartwatches in the playing area unless the chief arbiter authorizes them.
Appeals and Tournament Conduct
The regulations explain how players can appeal certain decisions in writing. For example, the procedure involves a €50 deposit and short submission deadlines. Officials also require prompt reporting of results and submission of scoresheets after games. Consequently, participants should familiarize themselves with the appeals, default and fair-play provisions before the tournament begins.
Festival and Winter Travel
Roquetas de Mar provides a coastal setting during the early-January chess season. The playing hotel lies near the Mediterranean beachfront and the Playa Serena neighborhood, where visitors can enjoy waterfront walks between rounds. Meanwhile, the festival’s combination of an Open, a rating-restricted section and Blitz creates opportunities for different playing strengths. The main Open’s nine-round schedule, prize list and entry conditions all come from the 2027 regulations, rather than an earlier edition.
