13 13 people viewed this event.

The Prague International Chess Festival 2027 – Open takes place from February 18–26, 2027, at the Hotel Don Giovanni Prague in the Czech Republic. The nine-round classical competition forms part of the ninth Prague International Chess Festival, which runs from February 16–26. The 1st Nový Bor Chess Club organizes the festival, bringing international visitors and Czech players together at one of the country’s established chess destinations.

Unlike the invitation-only Masters and Challengers competitions, the Open welcomes players without an age or rating restriction. It uses the Swiss system and offers opportunities for a GM norm where the final field and the player’s performance meet all FIDE requirements. Moreover, the tournament has a CZK 100,000 cash prize fund (approximately US$4,570), with CZK 30,000 for first place. Its winner also earns the right to participate in the 2028 Challengers tournament.

Players can plan their visit around a confirmed daily schedule, official entry categories, an on-site hotel package, and direct public transportation links. In addition, the festival hosts closed Masters, Challengers and Futures events, rating-group tournaments, and several side competitions. The main Open runs for nine consecutive days, with most games beginning at 3:00 PM local time and the final round scheduled for 11:00 AM on February 26.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The Open follows a nine-round Swiss system, so players meet different opponents based on the competition’s pairing rules and results. The classical time control gives each player 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by another 30 minutes for the remainder of the game. Furthermore, the clock adds 30 seconds for every move from the start of play.

The organizer allows a 60-minute default time for late arrivals. As a result, a player who reaches the board more than one hour after the scheduled start risks a loss under the applicable regulations. Players should arrive early enough to identify their board, complete any required attendance procedures, and avoid unnecessary time pressure before the game begins.

Playing Rule Official Tournament Detail
Format 9-round individual Swiss
Classical time control 90 minutes / 40 moves + 30 minutes + 30-second increment from move one
Default time 1 hour
Rating FIDE Standard-rated
GM norm Possible only when all current FIDE title-norm requirements are satisfied
Tie-break order Points; Buchholz Cut-1; Buchholz; Sonneborn-Berger; number of games with Black

GM Norm Opportunities

According to the official regulations, the Open is an open master tournament with a GM-norm objective. However, entry alone does not guarantee that a player can earn a norm. The final composition of opponents, federation representation, relevant titles, and individual performance must satisfy FIDE’s regulations. Consequently, anyone planning a norm attempt should inspect the starting list and consult the event’s arbiters if their eligibility is uncertain.

Ranking and Tie-Breaks

The organizer first ranks players by the points they score. If participants finish level, the regulations specify Buchholz Cut-1, Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, and the number of games played with Black as tie-break criteria. In addition, the Open uses the Hort system for distributing cash prizes among the number of players covered by the announced awards. This mechanism matters when competitors finish with equal scores around a prize boundary.

🏆 Prize Fund

The organizer guarantees CZK 100,000 in advertised cash prizes for the main Open. Using the European Central Bank reference rates from October 29, 2026 (EUR 1 = CZK 24.336 and USD 1.1130), the total is approximately US$4,570. The amounts below are converted for international readers; the official competition regulations state all prizes in Czech koruna.

Final Standing Prize in CZK (approximate USD)
1st CZK 30,000 ≈ US$1,370
2nd CZK 20,000 ≈ US$910
3rd CZK 15,000 ≈ US$690
4th CZK 10,000 ≈ US$460
5th CZK 8,000 ≈ US$370
6th CZK 6,000 ≈ US$270
7th CZK 4,000 ≈ US$180
8th CZK 3,000 ≈ US$140
9th CZK 2,000 ≈ US$90
10th CZK 2,000 ≈ US$90
Total cash prizes CZK 100,000 ≈ US$4,570

The first-place award leads the distribution with CZK 30,000, followed by CZK 20,000 for second and CZK 15,000 for third. Additionally, the regulations mention material prizes for other competitors. The Open’s CZK 100,000 total is separate from awards in the festival’s invitational, rapid, blitz and other side tournaments; therefore, it should not be combined with their amounts when describing this Open’s cash fund.

Qualification for the 2028 Challengers

Beyond the cash awards, the Open winner earns the right to play in the 2028 Challengers tournament. This provides a competitive incentive beyond immediate prize money. The Challengers competition belongs to the festival’s invitational circuit and offers its own route toward the following Masters event, according to the festival format.

♟️ Sections / Groups

This MyChess.Events page covers Tournament D — the Open. The main festival also stages closed and rating-group events at Hotel Don Giovanni. However, those competitions have different entry requirements, formats or dates. Players should register for the Open itself rather than choosing an unrelated festival group.

Festival Competition Format / Eligibility
D — Open February 18–26; 9-round Swiss; no age or rating restrictions; FIDE Standard
A — Masters February 17–26; invitational elite round-robin competition
B — Challengers February 17–26; invitational round-robin competition
C — Futures February 17–26; invitational youth round-robin competition
E — Rating Groups February 18–26; ten-player round robins for players with FIDE rating below 2000
F — Open 28+ February 21–25; five-round Swiss for players born in 1999 or earlier

Moreover, the festival offers separate rapid, blitz, Fischer random, Basque chess, pair blitz and problem-solving events. These are useful options for family members and spectators, but they should not be mistaken for sections within Tournament D. Players interested in those activities should consult the official festival program because registration and payment arrangements differ.

📅 Schedule

All times below follow Central European Time (CET, UTC+1), which applies in Prague in February. The Open begins on Thursday, February 18, after the organizer’s required attendance check. Unlike the closed Masters event, the Open has one classical round on each of nine consecutive days, including Monday, February 22.

Date & Time (CET) Activity
Feb 17 · 5:00–8:00 PM Advance player attendance / check-in
Feb 18 · 10:00 AM–1:00 PM Player attendance / check-in
Feb 18 · 3:00 PM Round 1
Feb 19 · 3:00 PM Round 2
Feb 20 · 3:00 PM Round 3
Feb 21 · 3:00 PM Round 4
Feb 22 · 3:00 PM Round 5
Feb 23 · 3:00 PM Round 6
Feb 24 · 3:00 PM Round 7
Feb 25 · 3:00 PM Round 8
Feb 26 · 11:00 AM Round 9
Feb 26 · 6:00 PM Festival closing ceremony

For most of the tournament, the 3:00 PM start leaves the morning available for preparation, rest or sightseeing. Meanwhile, the final round begins four hours earlier than the usual schedule. Therefore, players should not plan an early return journey on February 26 without allowing enough time for their last game and any prize presentation.

📝 Registration

Players can register through the official Prague Chess Festival registration page or by emailing registration@praguechessfestival.com. The organizer asks for applications by February 2, 2027; applications received afterward incur a €13 surcharge. Thus, February 2 is the stated date for registration without that surcharge, rather than a guarantee that entries remain available indefinitely.

Entry Fees for the Main Open

Fees depend on a player’s FIDE Standard rating and whether the participant books accommodation through the organizer. The lower rate applies to players who use the organizer’s hotel arrangement. In addition, GM, IM and WGM titleholders receive free entry under the stated terms.

Title / FIDE Rating Fee with Organizer Hotel / Other Fee
GM, IM, WGM €0 / €0
FIDE 2300+ €42.50 / €85
FIDE 2200–2299 €64 / €106.50
FIDE 2000–2199 €85 / €127.50
FIDE 1800–1999 €127.50 / €170
Below FIDE 1800 or unrated €170 / €213
Registration after Feb 2 Add €13 to the applicable fee

The entry fees already include the charge for FIDE rating calculations. Furthermore, the official regulations allow entrants to pay the starting fee and any additional accommodation balance at registration in euros, Czech crowns, or by supported debit and credit cards. Players should follow the organizer’s instructions rather than assuming MyChess.Events handles payments.

Mandatory check-in takes place on February 17 from 5:00–8:00 PM or on February 18 from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM. Consequently, participants arriving in Prague on the first playing day should account for the morning attendance window. The 3:00 PM opening round does not replace the required presentation procedure.

📍 Venue

Hotel Don Giovanni Prague, Vinohradská 2733/157a, 130 00 Prague 3-Žižkov, Czech Republic. The official organizer has confirmed the Don Giovanni Hotel as the event venue for the ninth edition of the festival. This four-star hotel lies in Prague’s Vinohrady area near the Želivského metro and tram stops. Moreover, the hotel contains the festival playing rooms, allowing participants staying on the property to reach their games without a separate city transfer.

For participants unfamiliar with Prague, the official venue page lists the hotel’s building coordinates as 50.07854° N, 14.47558° E. The same page describes designated spaces for the Open and rating-group games and provides transport guidance. Therefore, visitors should navigate to the full hotel address rather than entering only the city name.

🏨 Accommodation

Hotel Don Giovanni serves as both the official playing venue and the main accommodation option. The festival offers specific 2027 room rates for participants who arrange lodging through the organizer. In addition to the convenience of staying at the venue, participants using the official accommodation route qualify for the lower entry-fee column in the Open’s published regulations.

Hotel Don Giovanni Room Type Official Rate per Room / Night

Executive single, with breakfast and lounge €102
Standard double, with breakfast €93.50

Standard triple, with breakfast €127.50

The published rates apply to the organizers’ festival accommodation offer, subject to actual availability and booking arrangements. Furthermore, guests aged over 18 pay a municipal fee of CZK 50 per night at hotel reception. The hotel’s restaurant also offers discounted menu options for festival participants. Entrants can add an accommodation request through the tournament registration process.

🚆 How to Get There

By Metro and Tram

The hotel stands close to Želivského station on Prague Metro Line A. According to the official venue directions, the station lies about a two- to three-minute walk from the hotel entrance. Meanwhile, tram lines 7, 10, 11, 16 and 26 serve the Želivského stop, making travel from other parts of Prague practical without a car.

From Prague Airport

International air travelers usually arrive at Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). From there, visitors can use airport-connected public transport followed by the Metro network, or arrange a taxi or private transfer. However, exact journey times depend on traffic, the route, and departure time, so players should check live connections before traveling.

From Prague’s Railway Stations

Prague’s main railway hub, Praha hlavní nádraží, connects the city with destinations around the Czech Republic and across central Europe. Travelers arriving by rail can continue to Želivského through Prague’s urban transit system. In addition, visitors staying at other city hotels should compare the route to the tournament venue before choosing accommodations.

Parking

For drivers, the organizer advertises a festival participant parking rate of CZK 200 per day at Hotel Don Giovanni. Parking spaces may still be subject to availability, and normal hotel rules apply. Therefore, participants bringing a car should verify parking conditions when arranging their accommodation.

ℹ️ Other Information

Festival Atmosphere and Side Events

The Prague International Chess Festival presents a variety of chess formats under one roof. Alongside the Open, the 2027 program lists Masters, Challengers and Futures competitions, rating round robins, a five-round Open 28+ event, and shorter rapid and blitz competitions. Moreover, the schedule includes problem-solving, Basque chess, Fischer random and bughouse. These activities have their own formats and registration rules, so entrants should not confuse their fees with the main Open.

Grand Prix Don Giovanni

The festival’s Grand Prix system also combines performances from various tournaments and the daily chess quiz. Participants accumulate points under a published formula, with special awards presented at the closing ceremony on February 26. Nevertheless, the Grand Prix points and prizes are separate from the main Open’s CZK 100,000 cash prize fund.

Official Starting List and Pairings

The organizer’s 2027 Chess-Results record for Tournament D provides the starting list, the registered competition format and links to the other festival groups. In addition, participants can check the official festival website for announcements and the English regulations for the binding playing conditions. Chess-Results displays the Open under the identifier D, which distinguishes it from the festival’s Masters, Challengers and rating-group tournaments.

Participant Information

The organizer offers a digital festival player card with schedule notifications, competition details and discounts on selected hotel food and drinks. For example, the published benefits include reduced prices for hot drinks and selected buffet meals at the venue. Players can use the current official festival instructions to activate the card after registration.

Finally, the Open is a separate February 2027 event from the 25th Prague Open held at Olympik Hotel in January. The two tournaments have different organizers, venues and dates, despite the similar city and tournament names. International players should use the correct February registration link and Don Giovanni venue information when planning their trip.
