⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The World Championship consists of a maximum of 14 classical games.

Each player receives:

120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game.

In addition, the clock adds a 30-second increment per move from move 41.

The first player to reach 7.5 points wins the match immediately. Therefore, FIDE will cancel any remaining classical games once one player gains an unassailable lead.

Draw Offers

The players may not agree to a draw before Black completes move 40.

Before that point, a player may claim a draw only through the Chief Arbiter or Deputy Chief Arbiter in the case of:

  • threefold repetition; or
  • stalemate.

Drawing of Colours

FIDE will conduct the drawing of colours during the Opening Ceremony or another designated ceremony.

The player who receives White in Game 1 will also have White in all odd-numbered classical games.

Tiebreak Procedure

If the classical match finishes 7–7, the players will contest tiebreaks on December 12.

Stage Time Control
⚡ Rapid Playoff 4 games · 15+10
⚡ Second Playoff 2 games · 10+5
🔥 Blitz Playoff 2 games · 3+2
♟️ Sudden-Death Stage Single 3+2 games until a decisive result

FIDE conducts a new drawing of lots before each new playoff stage.

If the match remains tied after the two 3+2 games, the players continue with single 3+2 games. Colours reverse after every drawn game, and play continues until one game produces a decisive result.

Unless the Chief Arbiter decides otherwise, the players receive a 10-minute break between tiebreak games.

🏆 Prize Fund

The official prize fund is:

$2,500,000

The amount is net of any applicable local taxes.

Standard Prize Distribution

Under the standard distribution formula, each player receives:

$200,000 for every classical game won, including a win by forfeit.

After FIDE allocates those win bonuses, the two players divide the remaining balance equally.

Special Distribution Cases

If the final classical score is 7.5–6.5 with 13 decisive games, or 8–6 with all 14 games decisive, FIDE uses a fixed distribution:

Result Prize
🏆 Winner $1,300,000
🥈 Runner-up $1,200,000

FIDE uses the same $1.3 million / $1.2 million split if tiebreaks determine the World Champion.

One month before Game 1, each player receives an advance payment of $200,000. FIDE then deducts that amount from the player’s final prize payment.

🧩 Sections / Groups

The championship consists of one head-to-head World Championship match between the reigning champion and the challenger.

GM Gukesh D – India

Gukesh enters Geneva as the 18th World Chess Champion.

He won the title in Singapore in December 2024 after defeating Ding Liren 7.5–6.5. Gukesh secured the championship by winning the fourteenth and final classical game.

At only 18, he became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history.

His route to the title also included victory in the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament. Moreover, he won both individual and team gold medals for India at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.

Geneva will therefore mark Gukesh’s first defence of the World Championship title.

GM Javokhir Sindarov – Uzbekistan

Javokhir Sindarov qualified as challenger by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus.

He completed the tournament unbeaten and secured first place with a round to spare, eventually scoring 10/14.

Sindarov had already won the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa less than five months earlier. As a result, he became one of the youngest players ever to combine World Cup and Candidates victories in consecutive stages of the World Championship cycle.

He is also the first Uzbek player to qualify for a match for the undisputed World Chess Championship.

Historic Matchup

Both players will be 20 years old when the championship begins.

Consequently, Geneva 2026 will become the youngest World Championship title contest in chess history.

The match also reflects the rise of a new generation at the highest level: Gukesh represents India, while Sindarov represents Uzbekistan, two countries that have emerged as major forces in modern international chess.

👔 Dress Code

The official regulations require the players to wear a neat shirt and formal suit.

FIDE strictly applies the dress code inside the playing zone. Any request to wear national or traditional clothing requires prior approval.

🛡️ Fair Play & Security

The championship uses FIDE’s highest-level Fair Play protection measures.

Players must arrive at the playing area at least 10 minutes before each game for a security check.

Moreover, players may not bring telephones or other electronic equipment into the playing area if that equipment could disturb play or create a security concern.

While a game remains in progress, a player may leave the playing venue only with the permission of the Chief Arbiter and while accompanied by an arbiter.

FIDE may impose fines of up to $10,000 for violations of specific playing-area and security rules.

⚖️ Appeals

The championship has an official Appeals Committee.

A protest must include a deposit of:

$3,000

If the Appeals Committee accepts the protest, FIDE returns the deposit. Otherwise, FIDE may retain it.

In addition, they must attend daily press conferences after their games. These post-game press conferences may last up to approximately 30 minutes.

The players must also attend the final press conference and fulfil the promotional obligations defined in their championship contracts.
