Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament 2026

298 298 people viewed this event.

The Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament 2026 will take place on October 17–18, 2026, at Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club in the centre of Hastings, East Sussex. The compact weekend tournament offers five rounds of ECF-rated standard chess in a deliberately small field of approximately 24 players.

All participants compete in one Under 1900 section, with the October 2026 rating list used for eligibility. Games use 100 minutes plus a 15-second increment from move one, providing a substantial standard-play time control despite the compact two-day schedule.

The published cash awards total £325 / approx. $440, including prizes for the top three overall finishers and an additional £75 award for the leading eligible U1700 player. The event is hosted in the club’s own historic premises, only a short walk from Hastings railway station, and tea, coffee and sandwiches are provided free during the weekend.

♟️ Event Details

The tournament is designed as a small, traditional club weekend rather than a large multi-section congress. Three rounds are played on Saturday and two on Sunday.

The tournament has one playing section.

U1900 Players below the published 1900 rating threshold

All participants therefore compete together in the same five-round Swiss tournament.

📍 Venue

The tournament is held at the permanent home of Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club.

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club (Pelton House) – 2 Cornwallis Terrace, Hastings, East Sussex TN34 1EB, United Kingdom

The club owns its premises and operates in the centre of Hastings, very close to the railway station.

Pelton House is a traditional dedicated chess-club venue rather than a temporary hotel or conference-room location. The building contains club playing rooms and the club’s extensive chess library and historical collection.

Accessibility

Players should note an important venue limitation:

Pelton House does not have disabled access.

Participants with mobility requirements should contact the organizer before registering to discuss whether suitable arrangements are possible.

🚆 How to Get There

The venue is particularly convenient for players travelling by train.

Transport Details
🚆 Nearest Station Hastings
🚶 Station to Club Approximately 2 minutes on foot
🚕 Taxi Available from the station area
🅿️ Station Parking 75 spaces
🚗 Venue Address 2 Cornwallis Terrace, Hastings TN34 1EB

The club’s own directions describe the venue as only a two-minute walk from Hastings railway station.

From the station, cross to the opposite pavement, follow it to the left, then turn right at the traffic lights and continue along toward Cornwallis Terrace.

Hastings has direct rail connections toward London Charing Cross as well as connections through the South East rail network.

For players arriving through London Gatwick Airport, Southern services connect Gatwick Airport and Hastings, with typical journey times currently around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Players should check weekend engineering works and the final October timetable before travelling.

Parking

No dedicated parking arrangement has been published specifically for this tournament.

Hastings railway station has 75 parking spaces, while additional council and private parking is available around central Hastings.

Because the club is extremely close to the station, rail travel may be simpler than driving for many visitors.

ℹ️ Other Information

Free Refreshments

The organizer provides:

tea, coffee and sandwiches free of charge

during the tournament weekend.

This is included as part of the small-club tournament format rather than as a separate catering package.

Approximate 24-Player Limit

The playing field is restricted to approximately 24 players.

This creates a much smaller and more personal event than a typical large British weekend congress. It also means that players interested in entering should contact Marc Bryant early rather than relying on last-minute entry.

Half-Point Bye

The official tournament announcement includes a reference to a ½-point bye, but the eligible round and request deadline have been left blank in the published notice.

Players who need a bye should therefore confirm the exact rule directly with the organizer before entering rather than assuming that a particular round is available.

ECF Gold Requirement

The requirement for ECF Gold membership is stricter than simply being ECF rated.

Gold membership is the ECF level intended for players competing regularly in congresses and includes eligibility for rated tournament play under the applicable federation rules.

Players should ensure that their membership remains active through October 18, 2026.

A Historic Chess Club

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club was founded in 1882, making it one of England’s historic chess institutions.

The club was already well established before the legendary Hastings 1895 tournament, one of the most famous international competitions of the nineteenth century.

Over the decades, Hastings became closely associated with major names in chess history. The club’s own historical account records visits and activity involving players such as Joseph Henry Blackburne, Emanuel Lasker, Isidor Gunsberg, Henry Bird, Dawid Janowski and Richard Teichmann.

The club also has a particularly strong connection with Vera Menchik, the first Women’s World Chess Champion, who joined Hastings Chess Club as a teenager after moving to England.

Connection with the Hastings International Tradition

This U1900 weekend should not be confused with the much larger Hastings International Chess Congress.

However, it takes place inside the same local chess culture that made Hastings one of the best-known chess towns in Britain.

Many Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club members regularly participate in the Hastings International Congress, and the club continues to maintain historical photographs, trophies, honours boards and an extensive chess library at Pelton House.

Club Premises

Hastings & St Leonards is unusual in owning its own dedicated chess premises.

The club is normally open on most days and hosts internal tournaments, league matches, junior coaching, rapid events and social chess throughout the year.

The venue therefore gives visiting players the experience of playing in a genuine historic chess club rather than a generic event hall.

About Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club is a historic chess club based in Hastings, East Sussex, England. Established in 1882, it has played an important role in the development of organized chess in Hastings for more than 140 years. The club owns its premises at Pelton House, 2 Cornwallis Terrace, close to Hastings railway station. It participates in Sussex chess competitions and maintains an active program of club tournaments, league matches, weekend congresses, rapid chess, and junior activities.

The club runs chess throughout the year for players of different ages and strengths. Its internal program includes winter and summer competitions, while Friday club nights provide regular opportunities for rapid and social chess. In addition, Hastings & St Leonards operates a dedicated Junior Club for players aged five to eighteen. The club also hosts ECF-rated weekend tournaments and remains closely connected with Hastings’ internationally significant chess tradition.

Alan Hustwayte serves as President, while Mark Brougham is Chairman. For the club’s weekend tournaments, Marc A Bryant is a principal operational contact and regularly handles entries and tournament administration. During 2026, the club has maintained a particularly active schedule, including several weekend events, an Easter Rapid, Sussex team competition, and the upcoming Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament on October 17–18.

History and Chess Tradition

The club was founded after a public meeting held in Hastings on June 28, 1882. It soon developed into an ambitious chess organization and began arranging matches against strong London clubs, county competition, exhibitions, and chess festivals. This early activity helped create the environment that produced the famous Hastings 1895 tournament. The event brought together many of the strongest players in the world and was won by Harry Nelson Pillsbury. Emanuel Lasker, Wilhelm Steinitz, Mikhail Chigorin, Siegbert Tarrasch, and other leading masters competed.

Hastings later developed one of the strongest chess traditions in Britain. The separate Hastings International Chess Congress continues that wider tradition today. However, Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club has its own year-round identity, membership, competitions, premises, and tournament program.

Club and Team Chess

The club organizes a substantial program of internal competitions. Its winter schedule includes the Club Championship, Pelton Cup, and Rush Cup, while the summer season features tournaments such as the Anslow Cup, Bradley Martin Cup, Winser Knockout Trophy, and Dent Cup. Team chess also remains an important part of club life. Hastings competes within Sussex chess and has fielded teams in league and knockout events.

The 2025–26 season produced a notable result in the Paul Watson Trophy. Hastings reached the final for the first time in the club’s history after previously never progressing beyond the opening round. The team ultimately finished runner-up to East Grinstead in May 2026.

Junior and Community Chess

The Hastings & St Leonards Junior Club operates during school terms and welcomes young players from five to eighteen years old. The program caters both to complete beginners and to juniors who already play competitively. Mark Brougham and Keith Hossack lead the junior activity. Experienced club members also contribute instruction and practical advice. As a result, young players can learn the game in the same permanent chess environment used by the senior club.

For the autumn 2026 term, junior sessions resumed on September 4 and run on Friday evenings. The program offers an accessible route from learning the rules to regular competitive chess.

Tournament Activity

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club regularly organizes compact weekend tournaments at its Cornwallis Terrace premises. These events normally use a five-round format and attract both club members and visiting players. During 2026, the club scheduled several such tournaments. These included an U1800 weekend in April, an Open weekend in June, an U2000 tournament in August, and the forthcoming U1900 tournament in October.

The club also organized its traditional Easter Rapid on April 6, 2026. Twenty-four players took part, and Mark Rich won the Bourne Trophy. Consequently, the club’s calendar combines standardplay congresses with rapid chess, internal events, junior activity, and team competition.

Hastings Club Weekend U1900 2026

The Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament is scheduled for October 17–18, 2026 at the club’s own premises. The event uses a five-round format with a time control of 100 minutes plus a 15-second increment per move. Entry is limited to approximately 24 players, creating the compact club-congress format used in several Hastings weekend events.

The tournament offers prizes for the top three finishers as well as a grading prize for players under 1700. Marc A Bryant handles entries and serves as the published organizer contact for the event.
