♟️ About Maryland Chess Association

The Maryland Chess Association (MCA / MD Chess) is the official state affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (US Chess) for Maryland, USA. It operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing chess for players of all ages and levels, from beginners and school students to masters and grandmasters. MCA represents Maryland within the national US Chess structure, selects the state’s delegates to the annual US Chess meeting, and supports competitive chess throughout Maryland and the wider Washington metropolitan area.

Tournament organization forms the core of MCA’s activity. Its major events include the Maryland Open, Baltimore Open, Potomac Open, Old Line Open, Chesapeake Open, and the internationally oriented Washington International. In addition, the association maintains statewide tournament calendars, supports chess clubs, provides travel stipends for Maryland representatives at national invitational championships, and runs an extensive scholastic program. Its youth activities include state championships, the Maryland Girls Championship, K-12 competitions, and the selective Maryland Sweet 16.

Christopher Y. Kim is the current President of the Maryland Chess Association, with the official board listing effective from May 2026. Michael W. Regan serves as Vice President for Open Events and Treasurer, while John D. Rockefeller V is Vice President for Scholastic Events. MCA maintained a particularly active calendar in 2026, including the 71st Maryland Open in May, the 13th Washington International in July, and the 13th Potomac Open in August. The Washington International produced a strong international field and was won by GM Grigoriy Oparin, who finished on 7/9 and edged GM Christopher Woojin Yoo on tiebreak.

🏛️ Organization and Statewide Role

MCA operates as Maryland’s formal link with US Chess while also functioning as a tournament organizer and development organization.

Its current executive board is headed by Christopher Y. Kim – President. Michael W. Regan serves as Vice President for Open Events and Treasurer, John D. Rockefeller V as Vice President for Scholastic Events, Brent H. Layer as Secretary, and Sathish R. Nath as Assistant Vice President.

The association states that its mission is to improve both the quality and quantity of chess in Maryland. Its work therefore extends beyond tournaments to club development, educational initiatives, financial support for state representatives, communications, and the coordination of tournament information throughout Maryland.

🎓 Scholastic Chess and State Representation

Scholastic chess is a major part of MCA’s program. The association organizes and promotes K-12 tournaments in numerous communities across Maryland and maintains dedicated state championship pathways for young players.

One of its distinctive events is the Maryland Sweet 16, an invitational championship for leading Maryland scholastic players. Sandeep Thimmasamudram won the 2026 edition on March 22, defeating Steven Liu in an Armageddon playoff.

Maryland also sends representatives to the national invitational tournaments held in conjunction with the U.S. Open. MCA provides stipends for state representatives competing in events such as the Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions and the Irwin National Tournament of Senior State Champions.

The association also runs the Maryland Girls State Championship and Maryland K-12 State Championships, creating multiple routes from local scholastic tournaments into state and national competition.

🌟 Maryland Open

The Maryland Open is one of MCA’s principal annual championships. The 71st Annual Maryland Open took place from May 8–10, 2026 at the Rockville Hilton in Rockville, Maryland.

The tournament offered seven sections, from the Championship through U1000, with two- and three-day schedules available for several groups. The top sections used classical time controls with increment and included FIDE-rated competition.

The guaranteed prize fund reached $14,225, while advance registrations approached 200 players. Christopher Y. Kim served as Chief Tournament Director.

The Maryland Open also has an important organizational role because MCA officers are elected to renewable one-year terms at the association’s General Meeting held during the tournament.

🌍 Washington International

The Washington International is MCA’s strongest internationally oriented tournament. It provides serious classical competition for titled professionals, ambitious juniors, and players pursuing FIDE title norms.

The 13th Washington International took place from July 25–29, 2026 in Rockville. More than 200 players registered across the tournament sections, while the Championship field included numerous grandmasters and international masters.

The main competition consisted of nine rounds. GM Grigoriy Oparin and GM Christopher Woojin Yoo both finished with 7/9, with Oparin taking first place on tiebreak. Ethan Sheehan and GM Jianchao Zhou followed on 6.5 points.

The tournament is one of MCA’s most ambitious projects and helps connect Maryland chess with the broader international FIDE circuit.

🏆 Open Tournament Program

MCA organizes major rated events throughout the year rather than relying on a single championship.

The 13th Potomac Open took place from August 14–16, 2026 in Rockville and drew 164 advance registrations. Its Championship field included GMs Jesse Kraai, Bryan Smith, and Tal Baron together with numerous masters and strong juniors.

Other recurring MCA events include the Baltimore Open, Chesapeake Open, Old Line Open, and several state rapid, quick, action, and blitz competitions.

The calendar extends into the next season as well. The 64th Annual Baltimore Open is scheduled for February 5–7, 2027, continuing MCA’s year-round program of large US Chess-rated events.
