♟️ About Boca Raton Chess Club

Boca Raton Chess Club is a chess organization and tournament organizer based in Boca Raton, Florida, United States. It is an official affiliate of both US Chess and the Florida Chess Association (FCA). Rather than concentrating only on weekly local club play, the organization runs an extensive tournament program across South Florida and Florida’s Gulf Coast, providing competitive opportunities for adults, scholastic players, club competitors, and titled players.

The club organizes US Chess-rated and FIDE-rated classical tournaments, scholastic competitions, blitz events, state championships, and recurring Grand Prix series. Its established tournament portfolio includes the Summer Solstice Open, Turkey Bowl, Gulf Coast October Open, Gulf Coast New Year’s Open, and the long-running South Florida Grand Prix for school-age players. Boca Raton Chess Club also supports major Florida and national scholastic championships, and its tournament archive documents organized events extending back more than two decades.

Jon Haskel is the principal organizer and tournament director behind Boca Raton Chess Club. He is a US Chess National Tournament Director, FIDE International Arbiter, and International Organizer. In 2019, US Chess named Haskel Organizer of the Year and also presented him with an individual Scholastic Service Award. The club remains highly active in 2026. Its 17th South Florida Grand Prix begins on October 3, 2026, followed by the 4th Gulf Coast October Open from October 16–18 and the 24th Annual Turkey Bowl from November 13–15.

🏆 Major Tournament Program

Boca Raton Chess Club organizes tournaments at several locations across Florida rather than operating all competitions from one permanent tournament venue.

Its weekend opens generally feature multiple rating sections, allowing experienced tournament players and developing competitors to play in appropriately matched fields. The strongest sections frequently receive FIDE rating, while all applicable sections are submitted for US Chess rating.

Major tournaments also commonly include multiple schedule options, substantial cash prize structures, US Chess Grand Prix points, and separate blitz events. Grandmasters and International Masters can receive free entry in selected events, helping create stronger top sections.

This structure has allowed Boca Raton Chess Club to build recurring tournaments in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers/Estero, Boca Raton, Cooper City, and other Florida locations.

🌞 Summer Solstice Open

The Summer Solstice Open is one of the club’s established annual classical tournaments.

The 13th Annual Summer Solstice Open took place from May 29–31, 2026 at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North. The tournament featured five Swiss-system rounds with both three-day and accelerated two-day schedules.

Players competed across several rating sections. The Premier and Under 2050 sections were FIDE-rated, while US Chess ratings were used throughout the tournament for pairings and prize eligibility.

A separate Saturday-night blitz tournament complemented the classical competition. Boca Raton Chess Club also broadcast games from the top boards, continuing a feature used at several of its larger events.

🎓 South Florida Grand Prix

Scholastic chess forms an important part of Boca Raton Chess Club’s work. The South Florida Grand Prix provides a season-long tournament series specifically for students.

The 2025–2026 season marked the 16th year of the Grand Prix. Five tournaments were held at Franklin Academy in Cooper City between October 2025 and May 2026.

Players competed in K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12 categories, with both individual and team standings maintained throughout the season. To qualify for year-end awards, players had to participate regularly in the series.

The Grand Prix continues for the 2026–2027 school year with its 17th season. The first tournament is scheduled for October 3, 2026, again providing dedicated rated competition for school-age players.

🌟 Gulf Coast October Open and Turkey Bowl

The next major open tournament is the 4th Gulf Coast October Open, scheduled for October 16–18, 2026 in the Fort Myers/Estero area.

The competition continues Boca Raton Chess Club’s expansion beyond South Florida’s Atlantic coast and gives players in Southwest Florida access to another substantial weekend event.

The organization then returns to Fort Lauderdale for the 24th Annual Turkey Bowl from November 13–15, 2026 at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott North.

The Turkey Bowl features Premier, Under 2050, Under 1800, Under 1450, and Under 1150 sections. The four principal cash sections use five rounds, while the Premier and Under 2050 sections receive FIDE rating.

The published 2026 prize structure totals $12,600 based on 180 paid entries, with at least 75% guaranteed. A separate Saturday-night blitz tournament is also included in the weekend program.

🏛️ Tournament Organization and Leadership

Jon Haskel has developed an extensive record as a tournament director and scholastic chess organizer. His qualifications include National Tournament Director with US Chess together with the FIDE titles of International Arbiter and International Organizer.

US Chess recognized his work nationally in 2019, naming him Organizer of the Year. In the same year, he also received an individual Scholastic Service Award, reflecting his long-standing work with junior chess.
