Toronto Junior Chess Championship 2026 takes place on October 3–4, 2026 at Erindale United Church in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Organized by Mississauga Chess Club and endorsed by the Greater Toronto Chess League, the championship is open to eligible junior players from the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding communities.

The tournament features five classical Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Players compete in four sections: Open, U1800, U1400 and U1000.

All four sections are CFC rated. In addition, the Open and U1800 sections are FIDE rated. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 130 players.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All sections play five rounds using the Swiss system.

Players are asked to arrive by 09:30 on Saturday, October 3. The first-round pairings are scheduled to be posted at 09:30, with Round 1 beginning at 10:00.

A player who arrives more than 30 minutes after the scheduled starting time may lose the game by default.

⏸️ Byes

Players may request up to two half-point byes in Rounds 1–3.

Those half-point bye requests must be submitted before Round 1 begins.

For Rounds 4 and 5, players may request a zero-point bye.

The published tie-break order is:

2. Buchholz Cut 1
3. Sonneborn-Berger

🏆 Prize Fund

The organizer has not announced a cash prize fund. Instead, trophies and chess-equipment prizes will be awarded.

If the tournament reaches its full capacity of 130 participants, additional first-place prizes will be awarded.

If a section has fewer than 12 players, the organizer may combine sections.

⬆️ Playing Up

Players may enter a higher section if they are within 100 rating points of that section’s minimum rating.

The play-up surcharge is:

The play-up fee is collected at the venue.

✅ Eligibility

The championship is primarily intended for GTA-resident junior players born in 2006 or later.

Players from surrounding areas may also participate. However:

• Only eligible GTA residents can be crowned 2026 Toronto Junior Champion
• A maximum of 10 non-GTA players may participate

Players should make sure that their age, residency status and selected section are correct when registering.

Erindale United Church is located on the south side of Dundas Street in the Erindale area of Mississauga.

The building sits below street level and can be difficult to see directly from Dundas Street. The church recommends looking for the large blue Erindale United Church sign on the south side of Dundas Street when approaching the entrance.

The tournament organizer provides all chess equipment.

🚆 How to Get There

Erindale United Church is located on Dundas Crescent immediately south of Dundas Street West in Mississauga. The venue can be reached conveniently by car or MiWay public transit.

🚗 By Car

Approaching from the West

Travel east on Dundas Street past Mississauga Road.

Continue past the traffic lights near Erindale Presbyterian Church. Dundas Crescent is a sharp right turn at the top of the hill, approximately two blocks after those lights.

Look for the large blue Erindale United Church sign on the south side of Dundas Street.

Approaching from the East

Travel west on Dundas Street.

After passing the traffic lights at The Credit Woodlands, Dundas Crescent is on the left approximately one block farther west.

Because the church sits down in a hollow below Dundas Street, drivers should watch carefully for the entrance sign.

🅿️ Parking

Free parking is available in the front and rear lots of Erindale United Church.

Since Saturday has three tournament rounds and the tournament may accommodate up to 130 players, families should allow enough time to park and reach the playing hall before the 09:30 pairing announcement.

🚌 By MiWay Bus

The practical local service is MiWay Route 1 – Dundas.

Route 1 operates along Dundas Street and, under the current 2026 network, connects the Dundas corridor with Kipling Bus Terminal in Toronto and destinations farther west in Mississauga.

Players travelling from Toronto can therefore reach Kipling Bus Terminal by TTC and continue west toward Mississauga on MiWay Route 1.

The venue is close to the Dundas Street / Dundas Crescent area.

Players should use the current MiWay journey planner shortly before travelling because construction and temporary stop changes can affect individual Dundas Street stops.

🚇 From Toronto by TTC + MiWay

A practical public-transport route from Toronto is:

1. Travel by TTC to Kipling Station / Kipling Bus Terminal
2. Transfer to MiWay Route 1 – Dundas
3. Travel west along Dundas Street toward Erindale
4. Leave the bus near the Dundas Crescent / Credit Woodlands area
5. Walk the short remaining distance to Erindale United Church

Route 1 operates seven days a week. Under MiWay’s 2026 service plan, weekend service on the Dundas corridor operates at increased frequency during core daytime and evening hours.

Round 1 begins at 10:00.

The previous Toronto Junior Championship sold out with 125 participants, so players interested in the 2026 edition should register early.

All four sections are submitted for Chess Federation of Canada rating.

The Open and U1800 sections are additionally submitted for FIDE rating.
